To think that some (not all) of Jacob Rees-Mogg’s rules for communications are okay?

I am not a fan of Jacob Rees-Mogg. I would hate to be made to refer to Imperial units because I don’t think in Imperial (presumably he does) and the Esq. thing is alien to me.

However, things like “Check your work”, having two spaces after a full stop and no comma after “and” are fair enough. I’m not sure about all the banned words or phrases but perhaps they are overused (to the point of being sloppy).

But who gives them to Hansard? If I make a speech and someone writes it down without the correct punctuation, that's hardly my fault.
(Can't believe I'm defending the twat)

Alsohuman · 27/07/2019 14:29

Two spaces after a full stop is completely automatic for me. I couldn’t do anything else if I tried. Doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s a micro managing, nitpicking pedant, though.

Abraid2 · 27/07/2019 14:30

As for insisting on imperial measurements (other than miles)...

SkelterHelter · 27/07/2019 14:30

I always use two spaces. I was certainly taught to type long after the invention of the electric typewriter Grin

SwedishEdith · 27/07/2019 14:31

Two spaces after a full stop gets corrected where I work. He doesn't deliberately for affectation understand that technology has made this redundant. Plus, it flags you up as older if you use it on job applications, especially blind ones. It's still used by the same people who start emails with 'Dear'.

And, what's wrong with a comma after 'and'?

daisypond · 27/07/2019 14:31

It’s the equivalent of a child using extra- large handwriting to try to hide the fact that they have nothing to say.

Alsohuman · 27/07/2019 14:34

It definitely flags you up as older. Fortunately I’m old enough never to apply for another job again. If any employer has time to “correct” trivial shit, they probably have room for some redundancies.

pamperramper · 27/07/2019 14:35

I didn't know you're not supposed to start an email with "Dear"?

SwedishEdith · 27/07/2019 14:36

All those saying they use two spaces still - it's being corrected automatically for you here.

Cut and paste of Tinkly's post and my copies with one and two spaces.

"I use two spaces after a full stop. But I am a fan of the Oxford comma."

I use two spaces after a full stop. But I am a fan of the Oxford comma.

I use two spaces after a full stop. But I am a fan of the Oxford comma.

daisypond · 27/07/2019 14:37

Two spaces after a full stop might have had a rationale behind it in the days when you had to read the paper document in front of you, but now both writer and reader can easily pick a font, size of font and colour of text and background, two spaces have no purpose.

MaxNormal · 27/07/2019 14:37

Yet more distraction from the shitshow.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/07/2019 14:37

Using imperial units is a seriously retrograde step. The metric system is much simpler and internally consistent.

I don't suppose he would understand any sort of scientific or technical documents regardless of the units though.

And what's with the Esq. for men? Hum, I note that 'equal' is on his banned list.ConfusedHmm

TidyDancer · 27/07/2019 14:38

Two spaces after a full stop is considered wrong in my office. I delete them where I see them in any templates. They make work look clunky.

As if I needed more reason to hate JRM....

Elizabethtailor · 27/07/2019 14:38

These were all taught to me by my mother when she learned ‘word processing’ in the 1970s.

I was taught that Esq was used for any man who owned property and those who did not were ‘Mr’. Is he going to check everyone’s property status before corresponding?!

I do agree some of the banned expressions are pretty awful and overused.

QuckTheDuck · 27/07/2019 14:38

Not being British, the esq thing baffles me. What does it mean and who uses it?

Bourdic · 27/07/2019 14:40

I think you can have a comma after ‘and’, and, what’s more, due to the ongoing disappointment following the publication of this list, which I find not fit for purpose and which I find very unacceptable, I speculate that ( whilst I note your concern) you would not be willing to meet with me to ascertain your position on this matter. Hopefully, if you find it acceptable to yourself, perhaps you would be willing to invest a lot of time in meeting with me if you have got some time available. Ta in advance LOL xxx

SkelterHelter · 27/07/2019 14:40

I've been involved in the recruitment of probably around a hundred people (long since lost count). I would never notice how many spaces a person uses after a full stop. Even if it was noticeable and someone actually took any notice of it, what on earth would be wrong with 'flagging yourself up as older' on a job application?

SwedishEdith · 27/07/2019 14:41

I didn't know you're not supposed to start an email with "Dear"?

There's no "supposed" about it but it looks really old-fashioned. It's fine if you want to do it but it marks you out as older. Again, you might not are about that. I know someone who does it and gets commented on. It's like people who indent their paragraphs in emails. It's fine if you want to but you're not writing an actual letter so the indenting isn't needed for clarity.

daisypond · 27/07/2019 14:43

But who gives them to Hansard? If I make a speech and someone writes it down without the correct punctuation, that's hardly my fault. Hansard reporters transcribe the speeches themselves. They don’t get given a written speech - a written speech could be inaccurate or misleading or wilfully untruthful.

Elizabethtailor · 27/07/2019 14:43

Believe that traditionally Esq. was a ‘gentleman’ whereas Mr was a tradesman.

Think in the States it is used entirely differently in a legal form?

campion · 27/07/2019 14:45

Bourdic DH and I have just LOL at that.

Brilliant!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/07/2019 14:46

Heck, I put Dear, on my emails. What am I supposed to be doing? Howdy, hi, hello, oi?

I also indent paragraphs, does this define me as old? Cripes, the things you learn. I’ve already leant my eyebrows date me to the 90’s on MN. Who knows what other crimes I’m committing.

SwedishEdith · 27/07/2019 14:46

what on earth would be wrong with 'flagging yourself up as older' on a job application?

Because age discrimination exists. Lots of job applications try to be blind now and you have to try to eliminate identifying info. If you want to immediately mark yourself as older, double space away. No-one's stopping you.

I'm older than JRM, btw.

MikeUniformMike · 27/07/2019 14:47

Lots of people use two spaces after a full stop. A reason not to, is that it is easy to accidentally type two spaces between two words.
Oxford commas only when necessary.

Isatis · 27/07/2019 14:47

Nobody has used two spaces after a full stop since the invention of the electric typewriter. It’s archaic.

Oi, I do, it's what I was taught when I learned to type!
