To think that some (not all) of Jacob Rees-Mogg’s rules for communications are okay?

I am not a fan of Jacob Rees-Mogg. I would hate to be made to refer to Imperial units because I don’t think in Imperial (presumably he does) and the Esq. thing is alien to me.

However, things like “Check your work”, having two spaces after a full stop and no comma after “and” are fair enough. I’m not sure about all the banned words or phrases but perhaps they are overused (to the point of being sloppy).

Take the focus of "Bregzit" I suppose

DadDadDad · 28/07/2019 19:24

It is Passage to India. I've not actually read it (well, apart from the first sentence Grin ).

Peregrina · 28/07/2019 19:33

I have read it DadDadDad, albeit a long time ago. Hence my being the first to identify it, I think.

That Disraeli extract is so poorly written, I’m quite shocked. I had assumed he would write better than that, given that he protests so much.

DadDadDad · 28/07/2019 19:48

Agreed, daisy, but I'm even more surprised that an editor didn't do something with it. I'm not an editor but even I can immediately see lots of ways to improve the passage quoted above.

daisypond · 28/07/2019 20:13

I can see how it could be improved as well, but I suspect he thought he knew best and refused to have it edited. It would probably sell enough copies because of his name alone.

DadDadDad · 28/07/2019 21:03

Yes, I did wonder if he would be the sort of pompous idiot who would say "I have dictated it to say exactly what I wanted to say, and I will not permit any editor to mangle my immaculate prose."

Eton seems to produce adults who have massive / pathological superiority complexes.

longwayoff · 28/07/2019 23:51

Yes pamperramper, that's one of the benefits of being schooled there, if education fails, bluster and charm will suffice.
