On holiday abroad.
Been eaten alive.
In 2 days I have 30 mosquito bites. I can’t sleep as they are so itchy.
I’m wearing an anti mozzie bracelet, I’ve got a plug in repellent and mosquito spray (didn’t realise it doesn’t contain deet though) and I’m still getting bitten 15 times a day.
In the middle of nowhere so no chance of buying more supplies.
Don’t have long sleeves or trousers with me as it’s 38 degrees here.

Not much to suggest if you cant get anywhere to buy stuff. Do you have antihistamines and bite cream?

dementedpixie · 26/07/2019 21:50

Where are you?

eatenalivealiveoh · 26/07/2019 21:50

Also air con on, I shut doors behind me immediately and I still got bitten 4 times in bed this morning.

I’ve got this pen thing that you put on bites. That’s it.

Do you have any piriton? I get bitten to death and at least piriton stops me reacting to all of them

eatenalivealiveoh · 26/07/2019 21:54

No piriton.
In Egypt but kind of off the beaten track so no shops within walking distance.
I could probably get a cab somewhere, but not sure where to or what to buy!

Drink a shitload of tequila. You won't get bitten again and if you do you won't feel it .

growinganotherhead · 26/07/2019 21:55

Have you any antihistamine with you? That will help with the itching, take two now and one per day there after. Deet is the main mozzie repellent but citronella may be available where you are and can help. Otherwise if you have any oily products with you use them! Apply generously and often and if they are scented all the better. *This is not based on fact -more theory e.g. Avon skin so soft dry oil and Fenjal body oil which are both supposed to keep them off; the Fenjal worked for my husband in Cambodia Grin

eatenalivealiveoh · 26/07/2019 21:57

I’ve got skin so soft. It’s not helping.
No antihistamines.
The spray I have is eucalyptus and other stuff.
It stinks but isn’t helping.

Dip a tea spoon in boiling water and then press on the bites for as long as you can bear to reduce itching

jocktamsonsbairn · 26/07/2019 21:58

If you can eat food with lots of garlic and yeast - they hate garlic and but b12. Go to s pharmacy and get good anti histamines. See if you can get citronella oil anywhere and out a few drops in your moisturiser every evening and that should deter them. Try vinegar on your bites.
Lived a road for many years and now when I go back I tack garlic, anti histamines and vit b tablets daily for 2-3 weeks beforehand then continue on holiday plus the citronella.
See if you can buy those spirals you light and pop them on your balcony at night. Cut lemons may also help.
Good luck, they are horrible to deal with.

dementedpixie · 26/07/2019 21:58

Is there any standing water lurking near where you are staying as that's where they breed? Get rid if it too

eatenalivealiveoh · 26/07/2019 22:00

Standing water is swimming pools. Don’t know if that counts.
They are all saltwater not chlorine.
We haven’t used the balcony to sit on.
I’m getting bitten more in the day time than dusk/evenings.
I’m going to try teaspoon trick.

Googling suggests OFF repellent is available in egpyt

babysharkah · 26/07/2019 22:01

You need DEET and nets. I'd be trying I get somewhere to get them but I suffer horribly.

eatenalivealiveoh · 26/07/2019 22:02

I think we are a 30 minute travel from shops. I’ll ask reception for advice.

OP posts:
ginghambox · 26/07/2019 22:03

OFF is the best mozzie repellent if you can get it. go to a local pharmacy.

waltzingparrot · 26/07/2019 22:35

I'm abroad being eaten alive too and I worked really hard two weeks in advance of arrival..... Eating marmite, taking B1, taking antihistamines (this worked in the sense that my reaction to the bites hasn't been as bad as usual). I've been using Avon skin so soft and deer repellent but I've still been bitten a lot.

Have had some temporary relief from itch with toothpaste!

waltzingparrot · 26/07/2019 22:36

*Deet obviously, no such thing as deer repellent afaik.

givemesteel · 26/07/2019 22:42

I feel your pain op, I got eaten alive on my holiday too.

If you've got windows shut and air con on, I would recommend really carefully checking all the walls and dark spaces for the mosquitoes in the room and killing as many as you can, move towels and lights around as they'll hide everywhere.

Then be vigilent about having doors / windows open so you're not just letting more in. Maybe get reception to write a note in the local language for the maid about not opening windows.

Wallywobbles · 26/07/2019 22:50

I second t spoon in boiling water. It hurts but it works. The science is it needs to be 50c+ for 3 seconds. It kills the toxin that causes the itch.

Dhautumn · 26/07/2019 22:52

On placement we were discussing this and the nurse said thiamine repells mosquitoes. Thiamine is in vitamin b1 tablets so its maybe worth a shot?

msmith501 · 26/07/2019 22:54

Nivea or dove moisturiser... apparently it's what the marines use and it's a real thing!

JacksHat · 26/07/2019 22:56

If you do make it to a pharmacy hydrocortisone cream should help the itching.

TheFlis12345 · 26/07/2019 23:00

The problem you will have is that (so I have been told and experience seems to back it up), once you have been bitten the hormones the mossies emit into the bite attract others and tell them you are prime meat! Anything you can now do to physically keep them away will be your best defence.
