On holiday abroad.
Been eaten alive.
In 2 days I have 30 mosquito bites. I can’t sleep as they are so itchy.
I’m wearing an anti mozzie bracelet, I’ve got a plug in repellent and mosquito spray (didn’t realise it doesn’t contain deet though) and I’m still getting bitten 15 times a day.
In the middle of nowhere so no chance of buying more supplies.
Don’t have long sleeves or trousers with me as it’s 38 degrees here.

Incognito is better than skin so soft (I can’t use deet as it irritates my skin) Apply it all over after a shower, ears, hair parting, the lot. Tea trea oil helps take the itch off existing bites. I’m like a kebab house on a Friday night to mozzies, so I know your pain.
How to get them in Egypt, sorry, I have no clue. My sympathies to you!

Twofurrycatsagain · 26/07/2019 23:04

Ask other guests if they could spare an antihistamine? I always travel with some as get bitten a lot. Might be someone with some.

Flavabobble · 26/07/2019 23:04

The worst bites I've ever had were on the leg I was wearing one of those anti-mosquito bands on. So I'm not a fan of those.
I second the spoon thing. I got bitten on my arm on my last holiday, and could see the blisters forming. A hot spoon seemed to stop the reaction in its tracks

ImogenTubbs · 26/07/2019 23:05

Do you have a fan? It can help stop them landing so if you can leave it on overnight it can help.

Joh66 · 26/07/2019 23:10

Hunt the mosquitos down in your room and splat them. Keep the doors and windows shut all day. The only repellant that works is deet. Prevention is really where you need to be. Stay indoors at dusk. The hotel should be able to provide a mosquito net or deet. Can you borrow some from another holiday maker?

Medicaltextbook · 26/07/2019 23:20

Talk to the hotel about more preventive measures. If you are under a bed net try to sleep in the middle of the bed or your arm/leg can rest against the net.

wateraddict · 26/07/2019 23:30

Your hotel may have supplies, you can't be the first person this has happened to. I was loaned a mozzie plug in for the room the last time I was away. Good luck getting something!

Surfingtheweb · 26/07/2019 23:38

Don't wear any perfumes, keep all sweet smells to a minimum, I find that helps. They love me and I'm so allergic I have an epi pen now 😫

Lolly25 · 26/07/2019 23:43

The hotels have doctors, you really need a tropical bug spray there (tropical jungle formula) the biters there are particularly nasty.
See the hotel Dr. For spray and cream.

katewhinesalot · 26/07/2019 23:52

I used to take three of the one a day antihistamine tablets spread through the day. Didn't seem to have many side effects for taking more than I should. One had no effect whatsoever, in relieving the swelling.

See if anyone has a packet they aren't using. People may carry them in case. I always travel with them.

windmill121 · 27/07/2019 00:24

Do you mind me asking where in Egypt you are as we go in a few weeks and I really suffer from bites too

HopelessLayout · 27/07/2019 01:47

They are also attracted to dark blue clothing.

Witch Doctor for the bites.

Also get some Benadryl, crush it up, moisten it and apply it directly to the bites as a poultice.

Cold water also works for the itching, if you can stand to lie in a cold bath.

PenelopeFlintstone · 27/07/2019 01:58

For the itching: I live in a mosquito area and when we ran out of Stingose which stops the itching, we turned to roll-on deodorant after reading an online tip. Do you have any? It definitely works; so much so that I just stopped buying the Stingose. I expect a spray deodorant might have similar ingredients.

eatenalivealiveoh · 27/07/2019 15:31

I’ve got a Mitchum stick. May give that a go.
The kids had got away without a single bite until my 4 year old woke up with 11 bites this morning 😩
She is not taking it well.

Even in Spain we get them, and we are never without a room spray of raid or something similar and something with deet in. Have you asked at reception if they have any. My experience of egypt is that you can get a taxi driver to pick stuff up for you for a couple of pounds, wherever you are.

Outsomnia · 27/07/2019 21:47

The hot spoon trick really works for the itch. Dip spoon in a cup of very hot/boiling water and apply to the bite immediately. has to be very very hot, but it is better than the itch.

francienolan · 28/07/2019 00:29

Make a paste with bicarbonate and water. Will reduce itching and swelling.

lovemyboo · 28/07/2019 00:40

Any citrus smelling spray.
I swear mosquitos call each other when I’m around for dinner time!
I now use loccitane’s verbena during the summer in the UK and abroad but any lemon/ citrus smell works well.

OnlyaMan · 28/07/2019 19:56

I have holidayed in Western Canada several times. Over there, the mosquitoes have teeth.
I spoke at length there to a "Dendro-Entomologist". In Canada that is a BIG profession.
The only advice he could give me is a Mosquito repellant containing DEET. Nothing else works.

PenelopeFlintstone · 29/07/2019 09:18

Did the Mitchum stick work, OP?

Letseatgrandma · 29/07/2019 09:33

What insect repellent have you taken to Egypt?

I hope you don’t mean the Avon Skin so Soft one?!

This is a skin spray-it’s not an insect repellent. About ten years ago, a few Avon reps seemed to start saying it worked as a repellent. Now, I admit I did try it-it didn’t work...

Now, I see it everywhere and it’s even written in the Avon book that it works as an insect repellent -it actually makes me cross. It isn’t an insect repellent and I don’t know of anyone who says it works except people who never got bitten anyway. It’s just a spray that is greasy and slimy and smells disgusting.

I wonder why Avon would possibly want this rumour that its an effective insect repellent to continue?!

eatenalivealiveoh · 29/07/2019 10:03

I took something which looked like jungle formula. It was in almost identical packaging.
It was only when I got here that I realised it didn’t contain deet.
It’s got eucalyptus oil and citronella oil and other natural repellents in.
It doesn’t work great.
Also have a plug in and anti mosquito bracelet.
I used skin so soft as a last resort which didn’t work.
The Mitchum didn’t work either!
Only got 2 days left and the biting has calmed down and bites I had are drying up thank goodness!
Moral of the story is, don’t bother using anything except deet.

Sorry haven't read through all the responses but we live in a high mosquito area too and this is what we do (3/4 of us never get bites and DD1 who is particularly tasty apparently gets maybe one a week)

No standing water
No windows open without net/curtain across especially between 6am-10am and 6pm-bedtime
Mosquitos are more often inside the house than coming from the outside anyway, and we disturb their quiet dark spaces. So spray under beds, inside cupboards, those kind of hiding places and remember when you take extra bedding out of the cupboard for instance that you might have disturbed them.
Spray in bedrooms before leaving for meals etc and shut door til returning.
Plug ins aren't that efficient, better to have citronella candles, Citronella diffuser sticks, and citronella wipes that you can keep topping yourself up with.
Be sensible with clothes and use long sleeves loose fitting especially in the hours I mentioned earlier.
Now you have been bitten don't scratch! Put an icecube on the bite for as long as you can hold it.
