To not clean up after our sick cat?

gonewiththepotter · 26/07/2019 16:15

Our 1.5 year old cat has got sickness and dhiarrea. Vomiting all over the house this afternoon and several nasty episodes the other way.

DH is dealing with it atm but has to go to work shortly (gonna nip kitty to the vets before he does)!

I adore our cat, he’s my baby but I’m 4/5 weeks pregnant (struggling with symptoms so signed off work) and received a STERN warning from vets not to touch anything that comes out of him (specifically cat feces which can be REALLY dangerous for baby).

I’m now panicking about being left with kitty all night and short of locking him in the kitchen extension (which will distress him greatly) not sure what to do. I’m hoping the vets keep him in at this rate but he HATES the vets so I feel awful!

DH is doing everything ...literally following cat around with detol and a scrubbing brush (we have wood floors so it’s not too bad) whilst I sit here on the sofa feeling useless!

Hope kittens ok. Take care of yourself

Ah good old mum. Sorry cat and you are feeling so rough. Flowers

putputput · 26/07/2019 18:27

@pelirocco123 "sickness meds, is that wise?"

This is a fucking stupid comment. Without four different antisickness medications (plus multiple hospital admissions/steroids/and IVs) I would not have survived my pregnancies. Yes I'm an extreme case, but guilting a pregnant woman in for seeking treatment for sickness is not on. Leaving treatment too late can be really dangerous.

Op - I hope that you and your cat feel better soon.

C305 · 26/07/2019 18:35

@pelirocco123 I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have been on 2 different sickness meds throughout my entire pregnancy since 5 weeks & in hospital twice, like the PP, I wouldn't have survived my pregnancy otherwise and obviously all are prescribed by GP and deemed safe... not a helpful comment at all. Hope your sickness improves soon OPThanks

gonewiththepotter · 26/07/2019 20:13

@putputput
@C305

Thank you! I’m nowhere near as bad as you both ... yet but bad enough to stop my day to day life. Deffinitley feeling some serious judgment from those who know though.

Also those who don’t ‘know’ why I’m sick just think I’m being dramatic over a bug.

How do you keep your pregnancy from people when you’re really unwell! ‘I’ve got a bug/ something I ate/ virus from work’ can only last so long, right?

MIL has expressed in previous comments that she thinks people should wait until 12 weeks to say anything! No idea how we’ll get to that at this rate 😭

OP posts:
C305 · 26/07/2019 20:19

@gonewiththepotter ideally I'd love to have waited until 12 weeks (or even longer!) but the reality is when you're so sick, it's impossible to hide it from people...I ended up having to tell work at 6 weeks in the end as I was unable to leave the house and by 9 weeks had been in hospital once already so it was impossible not to tell family because otherwise you end up spinning an elaborate web of why you're so sick!😂 really hope it eases up for you soon, it's so tough, especially when people try to compare it to 'normal' morning sickness & all the 'have you tried ginger'! 😂🙄

gonewiththepotter · 26/07/2019 20:20

Fluffers is feeling very sorry for himself!
Curled up in his basket with a fresh bowl of water whilst I cuddle my bucket on the sofa!

Keep going in to give him a little stroke and he purrs away. Still feels warm but no more vomit!

Prometheus · 26/07/2019 20:24

Ewwww..... if your cat is vomiting everywhere then chuck it in the garden. It's an animal and not meant to be vomiting indoors Confused

HeronLanyon · 26/07/2019 20:29

Good for mum. Really glad you got it sorted. Have a feeling this will be something you look back on and laugh a lot about. In the meantime I hope the cat recovers plus your husband and mum (poor them!) and you too congrats and hope things improve !!

gonewiththepotter · 26/07/2019 20:43

@Prometheus
God I hope you’re not a pet owner.
A pet is a defenceless animal that YOU chose to take responsibility and care for!

They’re not ‘wild’, my cat has been brought up predominantly in door since he was born. He’s never spent a night outside before he’d be terrified and completely unprepared whilst also being poorly 😡

It was my choice to make this house him home and I WOULD NEVER kick him out because he’s poorly!

I even made sure my parents (who he loves) would offer him a home before TTC (in case we have a child who is allergic)

Good for you gonewiththepotter, I feel the same about my cats! Also took pregnancy sickness pills and couldn't have managed without them - now almost 25 weeks and feeling human again! I told family and work at about 6 weeks because I felt so ill and needed the support, so don't worry if you need to. Hope your cat feels better soon.

Snooky84 · 26/07/2019 21:11

I think your probably safe however if anything happened you would always blame yourself.
When I was pregnant my dog was ill with sickness and diarrhea. I was so paranoid my dh worked shifts and I would be alone with the dog. My mum said I would be fine but just to be safe why not book him into kennels for a few days. I did and felt so much better and the kennel didn't mind looking after the sick dog I was even able to call them to see how he was doing.
So why not just book the cat into a cattery for a couple of days.

SecretWitch · 26/07/2019 21:15

I hope you feel better, op. Don’t listen to any nonsense about tossing your indoor kitty outside. Hopefully, the medication from the vet will reign in his vomiting. You and kitty take it easy and stay cool

I couldn't. Everyone knew by 9 weeks. Some people guessed by 5. (I was sick from the day I did the test. It's why I tested slightly early.)

AE18 · 26/07/2019 21:21

Personally I didn't touch cat litter when pregnant. If I were you I wouldn't feel bad about keeping the cat in a certain part of the house if possible and avoiding that part when your partner is at work. When I was a kid I used to put an upturned bowl over it until my dad came back from work. Bit of a dick move on my part but a decent idea when pregnant.

Prometheus · 26/07/2019 21:21

It's an animal!!!! The cat would cope outdoors! It's not a defenceless baby! Have we lost sight of basic animal instinct Wink

Mia184 · 26/07/2019 21:21

OP, you sound lovely. I hope you and Fluffers get well very soon! Flowers

MrMeSeeks · 26/07/2019 21:23

Wtf is wrong with you? Hope to god you don’t have pets Hmm
Thankfully op is a good owner Confused

Hopefully kitty will be better soon! ( you too!)
I’d carry on cleaning after him, just keep wearing the gloves at all times and wash your hands.

MrMeSeeks · 26/07/2019 21:24

No but you’ve clearly lost sight of any compassion Hmm

Prometheus · 26/07/2019 21:42

No but I haven't lost sight of perspective. OP is rightly worried about the health of her unborn baby due to vomiting cat. But is refusing to put said cat (an animal, not human, whose genetics mean that it will be absolutely fine outdoors) in order to save her unborn baby. So is wringing her hands on Mumsnet when the answer is staring her right in the face. If you chose to anthropomorphise an animal then you take that risk.

Fluffers is up and about feeling bright and sulking about the rain again!!

No more vomiting episodes since the injection at the vets but still a little upset tummy!

My mum came, fluffs adored grandmas attention and she dealt with the litter box...then cleaned my house and told me how well I’m coping with this ‘morning’ sickness. Honestly it was like she just turned up and made everything better.

Where would we be without our mums huh?

I slept through the night without even waking up sick once and turns our mum got up to check in fluffers several times too (because she’s amazing)!

Maybe I do baby my cat too much but honestly he’s been brought up that way, he’s not wild. DH and I did this to him so now he’s our responsibility. He’s the softest little thing and very sweet. The other night when I was vomming he followed me into the loo and just sat there with me. Put his little paw on on leg and I swear he was thinking ‘it’s ok. I’m here’
