So, there's a country show that a group of my friends are attending in fancy dress - theme being 'out of this world'. After a suggestion form the group, my friend is refusing to wear printed out pictures of things like Mars Bars/Galaxy bars/Milky ways, because she says it would "be advertising non-vegan products" - all the while not making suggestions for alternative costumes...

Now, here's the AIBU. This is all in aid of a country show that she wants to attend that has (among other things) a dog show, a horse show, ferret racing, falconry etc. Would it be unreasonable to maybe point out that she might want to reconsider going to the show in the first place?

Or should I keep just keep quiet?

A vegan might not like ferret racing or falconry because they're used for hunting.

I'd definitely not go to a country show in fancy dress, though. Plenty of horses would absolutely freak out at people not looking like how people should, even if they've just got a pair of alien headboppers on.

@AE18. Vegan Society definition below, vegans should not be going to this kind of entertainment.

Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.

There are many ways to embrace vegan living. Yet one thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish and insects), dairy, eggs and honey - as well as avoiding animal-derived materials, products tested on animals and places that use animals for entertainment.

Yes but not everyone is a part of the Vegan Society. Many just describe themselves as vegan because they go by the dictionary definition of vegan, which is just about avoiding animal based food or products.

I'm not a fan of using animals as entertainment myself, but you can still be a vegan and have no interest in that topic if you don't eat the food.

People dressed as chocolate bars would terrify the cows

Hardly.

Hoppinggreen · 26/07/2019 17:33

The cows we help look after dont much like hats so I imagine a 5ft + chocolate bar would upset them
And given how freaked out a lot of horses get by something as harmless as a carrier bag I doubt it would go down well in the show jumping area either
I just really can’t get my head around how someone would come up with an idea of firstly going to a country show in fancy dress and then deciding to be chocolate bars

VanGoghsDog · 26/07/2019 19:54

Pictures of chocolate bars. Not five foot chocolate bars. Stop exaggerating.

I accept IABU. My lips are sealed. Smile
However, not entirely sure where you for the use we are dressing up as giant chic bars. The suggestion was to wear a darkish colour and pin the wrappers/print out. The fancy dress is just something this show does. They have theme and a little competition. Did not realise it would be weird. Sorry. The friend suggested we take part in the fancy dress in the first place.so I don't think it's her trying to get out of it.

@FuriousVexation " it's a country show"
Exactly how many people are you expecting to turn up who don't live rurally?"
The attendance is around 3-4000. No clue who of those live rurally or not.

Apologies, I just imagined people dressed as actual chocolate bars ( no idea why/how, must be the heat getting to my brain!!
If it’s a thing that people do at the show then fair enough, it’s just that I’ve been to loads and never come across it before

DD is a vegetarian by the way and wouldn’t wear anything linked to a non veggie product but would want to go to the show
