I've just finished taking Norethisterone for the first time. I was really worried after reading some reviews but I was absolutely fine, no side effects at all.

hazeyjane · 27/07/2019 18:28

Aagh. Had been hoping to get this prescribed for camping holiday when I'm next due. My periods are appalling atm (perimenopausal) and frankly getting up 3 times a night to shlepp across a field to go to the toilet, potentially bleed all over the sleeping bag and mat, all whilst also dealing with ds who also wakes in the night.....I thought taking this was a no brainer! Glad to see I might not have to go to GO, but a bit worried now about side effects . Hmmmm.

Tigerbandage · 27/07/2019 18:36

My daughters taken it twice for holidays, no side effects whatsoever

OhMsBeliever · 28/07/2019 11:12

For me the benefits of having no period (I get a few days so heavy I flood and find leaving the house difficult, which would ruin a holiday) outweighs the side effects of being a bit tearful and a headache afterwards.

I never noticed any difference in the period I had after, probably because mine are pretty horrendous anyway.

TruthOnTrial · 28/07/2019 11:47

The headache would be the biggest worry for me, because of migraine-like headaches, not migraines, but more than maybe average headache, occasionally.

I can see how much its worth it though when it threatens to ruin a holiday like that.

I get quite bad migraines, throbbing head, have to lie in a darkened room type but I didn't get anything with this pill. Tell a lie I got a slight tight head on the first day but I think that was because I was convinced I was going to get really bad side effects. I didn't.
If you're concerned too much, how about trying a more natural remedy - I think raspberry leaf tea or apple cider vinegar is supposed to delay it, probably not as effective though.

Teaandchocolatecake · 28/07/2019 12:58

I’ve just has it prescribed but after reading about it I’ve decided not to take it. A lot of people appear to have side effects and I’ve decided I would prefer a period to potentially suffering some of the side effects people get.

I’ve bought a menstrual cup instead as it won’t need changing as regularly as tampons/towels on my heaviest couple of days.

AloneLonelyLoner · 28/07/2019 13:06

Just don't take the 7 day break! I've done it lots of times over the years (not recently). I had no difficulties.

SolitudeSometimesIs · 28/07/2019 15:18

My GP really wasn’t keen on me taking this as I have horrendous PMT symptoms and hormone related migraines. I have very heavy periods so she prescribed Ponstan for me and it has some ingredient that lightens blood flow. It worked well and I would recommend that too.

TruthOnTrial · 12/08/2019 12:50

Thank you so much all for your personal contributions.

I am heading to a boots or superdrug to see whats on offer to me, but I might also have a chat with my gp about the Ponstan specifically, as this might work well around the headaches and heavy painful flow.

Thanks all!

If you suggested dont take a break on the pill, rtft.

I’ve jsut taken it for 10 days for a holiday. Be warned: I have suffered with HORRENDOUS indigestion akin only to that I had in pregnancy.. it’s the progesterone. I’ve been mainlining rennie and pepto bismol and tbh it’s kind of dampened my holiday! I only got this side effect full-on after about 3 days of taking it so I’d recommend bringing a stock of anti indigestion pills just in case.

TruthOnTrial · 12/08/2019 21:10

You're the first to mention that. Noted. Definitely worthwhile knowing! Thanks.

I took it and it ruined my holiday. Would have preferred my period. Was a hormonal mess and got an awful awful migraine which made me very sick.

Glasgowgin · 12/08/2019 21:28

I’d avoid norethisterone if you can’t take oestrogens (eg severe migraine or previous thrombosis etc) as it is partially metabolised to oestrogen in the body so it does carry some risks- if you’re not medically able to take the combined pill I wouldn’t take norethisterone. Provera is safer but not licensed for period delay so I suspect you can’t get it online (might be wrong!)

I normally advise people to delay the period before the holiday if you’ve got time and aim to have that one a week or two
before you go- then you’re pretty likely to be period and hormone free on holiday.

(I wouldn’t touch it personally but I don’t do well with hormones and have reasonably light periods)

Branleuse · 12/08/2019 21:31

Be warned, it can make you have PMT the entire time. I would rather get period over and done with, unless yours are particularly bad

Ffsnosexallowed · 12/08/2019 21:35

I used it this year on holiday - I have heavy periods which would have been a nightmare. Got it online, no side effects, normal period 3 days after I stopped taking it. I would have no hesitation taking it again.

seasideramble · 12/08/2019 21:43

I've just finished taking Noristherone. It did what I wanted it to. Period started very quickly after I took the last pill. I also missed one resulting in a 12 hr gap and that brought on light bleeding so be careful with that. It stopped again after the next tablet

It did however give me awful mood swings. I became aggressive, suicidal, incredibly low and and tearful. I do suffer from mood swings any way but these were MASSIVELY amplified. I've not felt so out of control in a long time

Fink · 12/08/2019 21:45

I used it once 21 years ago when I was volunteering in a shanty town in a developing country and would have had no access to proper sanitation (it was before I discovered menstrual cups). Never again.

As pp have mentioned, I got all the PMS and period pains without the bleeding. Spots, bloating, terrible mood, awful cramps etc.

It taught me a lesson not to medicate when I'm not sick. Even a period in an African hovel would have been better than 2 weeks of continuous PMS until I got to a more sanitary environment and had a period.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 12/08/2019 21:47

I took it last month on holiday bought online from boots, three days in I had to stop it and just have my periods. The PMT and bloating were horrific!

WrongKindOfFace · 12/08/2019 21:50

It can make me a grumpy twat so what works better for me is to take it to delay the period before my holiday so moving the date of the holiday period.

IndianaMoleWoman · 12/08/2019 21:51

I’ve been taking it for over 20 years whenever necessary - holidays, special occasions etc. as I have very heavy periods. Yes it has made me a bit hormonal at times and definitely bloated but nothing horrendous, and it’s always been better than an actual period (I cannot swim on my period because my flow is heavy enough to leak through even the most absorbing tampons). The period that you get afterwards is really heavy, I find that the longer you delay the heavier it is.

I’ve also told lots of friends and colleagues about it who have never heard of it. I think it’s symptomatic of the way women are treated around periods, contraception and pregnancy - you’re very much expected to just get on with it and not seek help, so we do. Since the recent news items about norethisterone I’ve been astounded by the amount of comments on articles (often from men Hmm) that you shouldn’t mess with nature. Preposterous and so sexist.

Siameasy · 12/08/2019 22:06

Thanks for this because I was going to request it but now am not! Reading some of the replies to DH and we are both thinking if you suffer awful PMT (I do) it may make it even worse,

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 12/08/2019 22:38

I think I had this. Well, it was something for warding off my period. I’m sure it said to take it on the first day of my period. It gave me the most horrendously heavy period I’ve ever had. Non stop heavy bleeding for over a week. Ruined the holiday for me. I even bled through my clothes. Absolutely horrible. My actual period would have just been a few days of light bleeding, a couple of heavy days at the most. This was about ten days of heavy bleeding. Definitely didn’t agree with me, whatever it was. Never again.

TruthOnTrial · 13/08/2019 10:30

What did you take though VonLipwig? How long ago do you think? Sounds like your periods weren't too cumbersome to have to consider something like this. Although, if its easy to skip a period with hormone support, then I guess why not, especially when comes to swimming or being remote for example, or just because!
