I've used it and also found I got cramps during the time I should have been bleeding. I then had a horrendous 10 day period once I stopped taking them. It was useful at the time but I'm not sure it's worth the after effects

Fireinthegrate · 26/07/2019 10:25

I took it for one holiday and quite frankly it ruined the holiday.
Yes, it stopped my period coming, but the side effects were awful.
I felt angry, low, suicidal, argued with my husband and daughters and had a miserable time. I spent a lot of time in the hotel bedroom crying and working put ways to either kill my self or harm myself (I did neither thankfully).
My husband was a star and kept the girls out of my way and tried to talk to me rationally.

It would have been better to just have had the period and enjoyed the other days of the holiday.
Never again.

JacquesHammer · 26/07/2019 10:28

I found Noresthisterone absolutely hideous. No side effects during particularly but the following period was appalling and it completely screwed with my cycle for months.

I've since had Provera prescribed for the same reason and found it amazing, no side effects, normal period after, no problems with cycle. My 12 year old DD has also had it and found the same.

Autumnbrownie · 26/07/2019 10:28

Just adding from my previous comment, I always get it as a standard prescription so the usual cost of £8.80 (if you pay for prescriptions) if you're entitled to free prescriptions, it's still included even though it's not an essential medicine, it's still free, I know you can get it other ways but it's usually more expensive.

Also I've never noticed my period being heavier or having more cramps after using it.

Dec2019mumtobe · 26/07/2019 10:30

I took it when I realised my period was due on my wedding day. My doctor prescribed me it. It was a standard nhs prescription not private. Though I am pretty sure you can order it online from Superdrug without seeing the DR. Maybe Lloyd's too. (But I was already seeing the dr for something else when I asked)

I stopped taking it after the wedding and I spent two days crying nonstop. I couldn't control myself. I literally cried solidly - my poor husband probably thought WTF?? I was so sad it was all over as I'd had such a lovely time with family and friends I rarely see, but I think the hormones heightened the sadness.

Btw, I'd also never heard of this before last year and I'm in my 30s 🙂🙂

TruthOnTrial · 26/07/2019 10:31

Piecing together info from pp it does sound like progesterone (will look it up).

Makes sense therefore that it would delay period and induce pmt symptoms potentially, or increase them in some, and that endometrium would continue to grow, causing more bleeding and associated pain once stopped, including hormonal headaches.

I used primulot last year. I get sore boobs a couple of weeks before a period so this lasted an extra couple of weeks while I was on the tablets. Was also bloated, paranoid that I'd bleed so wore a pad daily, and had a slightly more painful period after it. Don't think I'd bother with it again but we were doing a lot of activity on holiday last year so it served its purpose.

fraxion · 26/07/2019 10:36

I've had norethisterone a few times and didn't suffer any ill effects but my daughter was prescribed it and she was really ill with severe nausea and vomiting which lasted a couple of days until it was out of her system. She stopped taking it obviously.

TruthOnTrial · 26/07/2019 10:37

Fire how horrendous! So sorry. Flowers

Thanks Jaques you're the first to mention Provera, will check into it especially as you've tried both, with very different outcomes.

Mumtobe glad to see it hasn't hampered your baby-making abilities! Congratulations Grin

Good job you didn't feel like that on your big day, but it does sound like exaggerated pmt for you.

I got it from Boots online period delay clinic, but I've noticed a sign at Asda pharmacy saying that they offer the service: I guess the pharmacist would issue it, after going over your health details.

Nesssie · 26/07/2019 11:00

I used it a lot when I was younger. I would get bloated towards the end but no other side effects luckily.
Have to take it 3 times day though which is a pain.

TSSDNCOP · 26/07/2019 11:02

Sorry if I missed it but why don’t you just start your new pill packet early?

TSSDNCOP · 26/07/2019 11:04

Ignore me I just read your post at 9:03

MyCatHatesEverybody · 26/07/2019 11:07

I've taken it a few times now but never any side effects other than th first period afterwards being a bit heavier.

Do you have time before your holiday to give it a trial run?

Pinktinker · 26/07/2019 11:09

I’ve used it a few times because my period was always due on my birthday and at Christmas. It’s fantastic, your period begins naturally 2-3 days after the last pill. I’ve never had side effects.

TruthOnTrial · 26/07/2019 13:08

Are the brands mentioned by pp all UK?

So far primulot, provera and Noresthisterone, do they all work in the same way?

Next period is holiday so no chance for a pratice run, tbh its not something I'd want to do apart from as an rare exception, because of upsetting things generally.

You know fiddling around with stuff thats not broken.

Drum2018 · 26/07/2019 15:14

Primulot is just a name for a tablet containing the ingredient norethisterone. I only had to take one per day.

Megan2018 · 26/07/2019 15:20

I've used it once when our honeymoon road trip (long driving days with no toilets) coincided with mine. I had no side effects whatsover.

Its been around donkeys years though - friends of mine took it when we were school age (and I'm old!) - I had never needed it before as was on the pill and just took them back to back.

youwouldthink · 26/07/2019 15:54

I've used Primulout about 8 times in the last 6-7 years. Again like pp I only take the 2 a day not 3 and apart from a slightly heavy period 3-4 days after finishing its been a godsend while on holiday etc

BackforGood · 26/07/2019 15:55

Hmm. Following with interest as dd is taking it whilst she is away for 3 weeks at the moment.
Hadn't been aware of the potential side effects.

EmrysAtticus · 26/07/2019 16:00

I considered it but decided against it after reading about the mood issues. My period is annoying but it doesn't mess with my mood thankfully. I would rather deal with it than be miserable all holiday.

FairyDust92 · 26/07/2019 16:01

I've had this on prescription several times and never had to pay 😕

LazyLemur · 26/07/2019 16:17

I've taken this for 10 days to stop a haemorrhage (post gynae surgery). Side effects were weird. I was hungry and energetic. Then had the worst PMT of my life when I came off of it.

I'm taking it again soon (for a happy occasion this time). Ordered a private prescription from Superdrug!

Have ALL the chocolate ready for the hormone drop at the end.

TruthOnTrial · 27/07/2019 18:12

Chocolate for you from me too. Its pretty impressive that its used effectively for haemorrhage too! Thank goodness you were ok, and congrats for your happy occasion whatever that may be Flowers

I use Norethisterone every summer holiday, and have never had any side effects.

And my GP is more than happy to give me an NHS prescription.
