To think you don’t need a mansion to be able to have a dog?!

According to DM (who does not like dogs 🤔) my new home is far too small for a Labrador we are looking to add to our family.

I don’t see how anyone can vote or comment until we know how big your house is and what family you have living there.

CoffeeQueen24 · 26/07/2019 08:23

Idea of sizes

Ahhh - cross posted!

MeanMrMustardSeed · 26/07/2019 08:23

Looks plenty big enough, what family do you have living there?

PookieDo · 26/07/2019 08:24

No not a mansion but a decent size with a garden surely
I have a small dog 3 bed house with a small ish garden and I can’t imagine a larger dog would have much fun in a small garden

Fairylea · 26/07/2019 08:25

I think with a larger ish dog you must have a garden, that’s the main thing. It’s good to be able to let them out regularly for wees and a run about.

CoffeeQueen24 · 26/07/2019 08:26

It will be me, Dh and our 2 dc (6 Yr old and 3 yr old).

People take their dogs out of the house on these things called walks? If you lack a big garden, that sort of thing can compensate.

cakesandphotos · 26/07/2019 08:27

I think you so need a garden, especially with a Labrador. They're big and active

Drinkandknowthings · 26/07/2019 08:28

We have a very small 2 bed house with 2 girls and a big golden retriever. Inside space doesn’t matter too much really. We don’t even have a dog bed anymore because it was the cat sleeping in it instead of the dog.

However, we do have a very large garden and a 2 acre field so plenty of outside space.

YABU to have just (indirectly) posted your address. Blush

CoffeeQueen24 · 26/07/2019 08:33

Have I Zippy?! 😲which one?!

I won't say how I've gotten your address because it's not perfectly obvious. Just be careful re. pictures like this in future !

keepingbees · 26/07/2019 08:34

My house is roughly the same size and layout as that. We thought about a dog but only a small one. We have 3DC though and a smaller garden. A Labrador size dog would have been too big in our house personally.

CoffeeQueen24 · 26/07/2019 08:35

Thank you zippy I have ask mumsnet to zap this thread in case.

DF lives in a house half that size with THREE (larger than average) labs. They get walked MILES every day so it's not a problem.

StreetwiseHercules · 26/07/2019 08:40

It’s just your DM being difficult, as these people seem to like to be from time to time. You’re supposed to live your life to THEIR exact preferences, did t you know?

There will be comments to come like “you’re getting a dog to put me off coming” but just ignore.

madja · 26/07/2019 08:44

I've got a pretty small three bed and small garden. We have a husky and three cats! It's cosy but we manage as we have a lovely park close by. It's a Labrador not a Brontosaurus!

StillMedusa · 26/07/2019 08:45

I have a three bed house with a decent (extended) living room but a small back garden. My 11 week old puppy will be a fairly large dog when she grows up. I can't see the problem... I'll walk her..we have lots of nice places to go for walks (she can't go out til Monday) . As long as the dog is exercised properly and has some outside space I don't think it matters too much.
My brother lives in central London in a flat, and has a Havanese..so smallish dog. But they have Victoria park 100 yards from his flat and the dog has several great walks every day and is a thriving lovely boy, who seems to love city life! (gets so excited when they go on the tube!)

RuthW · 26/07/2019 08:46

No idea about labs but greyhounds need very little space and are great for flats.

S1naidSucks · 26/07/2019 08:54

A neighbour from up the street lives in a smaller house than you and has SEVEN large dogs (think labs, huskies, German Shepard’s). Apparently most of them sleep in his and his wife’s room! Confused

Anyway it really doesn’t matter what size the house is, as your dog will most probably end up squeezing in beside you, no matter how big or small your seat is and pushing you out of bed, if you share. I’m currently lying with one leg hanging out of bed because of this beast. No I didn’t iron my quilt. Grin pictures fainting Mumsnetters

LucheroTena · 26/07/2019 08:54

As long as you take them out for regular walks they will be fine. Dogs like to be with the family, however ‘cramped’.

CoffeeQueen24 · 26/07/2019 08:55

We would walk the dog at least twice a day plus there’s a park within 5 min walk we would take dog to regularly.
