To think you don’t need a mansion to be able to have a dog?!

According to DM (who does not like dogs 🤔) my new home is far too small for a Labrador we are looking to add to our family.

Ps The neighbours walk their dogs at least once a day, no matter the weather.

I've got a smallish three bed house with smallish garden and a dog same size as a Labrador, mine was adopted when she was two so past the puppy stage but tbh most dogs I know off don't really do much in the house? They go for a walk come home and sleep/cuddle up and mine might have a 10 minute play time that's about it. As long as they've got two decent walks a day and somewhere they can get away if they want to( mine likes to go under the bed) don't think it matters.

ShirleyPhallus · 26/07/2019 08:56

Where can you see the address?!

Labs need lots of stimulating exercise. Personally I think Labs should be working dogs or with very active families only.
I don’t think size of house comes into it.

S1naidSucks · 26/07/2019 09:01

Why should they be working dogs?

Pharlapwasthebest · 26/07/2019 09:01

I live in a 2 bed with a small garden. We have a lab, he wanders out for a wee, but that’s it, I take him for a proper walk every day, and he spends the rest of his time asleep (when he’s not looking for food). He does get in the way at times, but that’s because he is a. A dog, and b. A lab.
However, best dog ever!!

MrsMozartMkII · 26/07/2019 09:09

So long as the dog gets enough exercise (walks), has a garden for a mooch around in, and somewhere to rest where s/he is it of the way and won't get stood on or disturbed (especially by visiting kids), then go for it.

stucknoue · 26/07/2019 09:11

That's a normal sized of not slightly larger than average house! A garden is important but more than that is willingness to walk the dog multiple times a day rain or shine if you don't have acreage. My dog, due to porous fences, has nearly 1/2 acre to patrol (he has the important "job" of protecting us and our neighbours from "intruders" mostly of the feline variety!) and still he gets 2-3 walksa day

tabulahrasa · 26/07/2019 09:11

My house is smaller than that, I’ve had a lab cross and a Rottweiler while in this house and I’m currently fostering a collie - they’ve all fitted fine.

Gardens are handy for toileting and a bit more space for playing and training, but size doesn’t matter massively because they get walks...

SweatingToTheGrave · 26/07/2019 09:12

So long as they are walked no I think it's fine.

We have a spaniel in a 2 bedroom cottage with a courtyard. But we live on a country lane with huge fields a minute walk away which be runs in for hours and he goes to work all day with DH so don't feel guilty at all. He's got a fab life!!

BarbaraofSeville · 26/07/2019 09:14

Well either your DM has some strange ideas or this is some weird stealth boast about your five bedroom house with decent sized garden. Confused.
