To put fan in toddlers room

So like most of the uk we are melting here. Upstairs is like the heat hitting you when you get off an aeroplane on holiday. WIBU to put fans in all my DC rooms. I have read loads about never having them in children's rooms or pointing them at them in the night (which I wouldn't) but will I really summon demons from the 7th circle of hell by having them in there or will my DC be absolutely fine? They are 4, 3 and 2 youngest is in a cot if that makes a difference?

Why can the they not have fans pointing at them? In case they get too cold?

Hardly much risk of that today I'd have thought, and not much of an issue anyway unless it's a small baby since they can't regulate temp as well.

My kids have fans pointed at them all night, as do I!

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 25/07/2019 17:39

DS is still in our room, he's 7 months and there was no way we'd have been able to sleep without a fan on. Made sure it wasn't pointing directly at him, having said that he's currently snoozing next to me on our bed having crawled around and curled up directly in the blast of the fan for an impromptu nap

Yogurtcoveredricecake · 25/07/2019 17:39

Why can't you have them pointed at them? Will they blow away?

Our 18 month old has had a fan on him for the last two nights. I'm very jealous.

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 25/07/2019 17:41

This is a really old study, but I cannot find anywhere that you should not use fans in children’s rooms, where did you get that information from? Surely it has been long understood that it is more dangerous for children to overheat.

I8toys · 25/07/2019 17:42

My kids (and us) have always had fans. Can't see a problem

lunar1 · 25/07/2019 17:43

I didn't know you shouldn't, mine have always had them when needed.

EggysMom · 25/07/2019 17:45

My understanding was that very young children cannot regulate their own body temperature very well. If in the direct flow of a cold fan, their outer body goes cold; the inner core over-compensates to try and warm the outer body; and they could over heat.

Cannot remember where I read that though, it was nearly ten years ago!

chocolatesparkles · 25/07/2019 17:54

To be fair I don't think I have read this as "official" advice anywhere just thought it was advised against (I know Gro company advise against it) but that being said hearing all of your DC having these nice breezy rooms I'm going to get the fans out!

Our kids have had fans since they have had covers they can remove themselves, never directly on them but oscalating across their beds with a window open. We have even resorted to cold flannels to help them sleep these last couple of nights

pippistrelle · 25/07/2019 18:02

Korean Fan Death. It's a thing. But bonkers. And you're probably not in Korea so you'll be doubly fine.

blackteasplease · 25/07/2019 18:06

Mine have always had them when hot. I usually turn them off when I go to sleep as they got into a deep.sleep by then and the temperature has usualy droppes

Tartsamazeballs · 25/07/2019 18:25

It's a Korean old wives tale, "fan death". Not real but widely believed.

SinkGirl · 25/07/2019 18:25

The summer after my twins were born (so 10 months old) we were living in a house that was like an actual sauna. They had two fans in their room, and frozen bottles of water left on trays in front of the fans so that they defrosted through the night. They’re almost 3 now and had a long nap today thanks to their fan.

For those relying on cold flannels, get some of these- best thing I’ve bought this year:
YQXCC 2 Pack Cooling Towel (120 x 30 cm), Ice Towel, Microfiber Towel For Instant Cooling Relief, Cool Cold Towel for Yoga Beach Golf Travel Gym Sports Swimming Camping (Blue) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07SS9NPLJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_IxEoDbRXFM36E?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

PantsyMcPantsface · 25/07/2019 18:28

Mine have always had a tower fan in their room (the oscillation is broke). No way anyone is sleeping tonight without a fan in this heat! To be fair, it's a bit of a shit fan now but everything helps

MsHopey · 25/07/2019 18:31

DS is 2 and has one in his rooms in most weathers. Its white noise (thank god because some inconsiderate areseholes are playing music at full blast and singing along and swearing 🙄) and keeps him cool in this heat.
He sleeps better with it on.

raspberryk · 25/07/2019 18:33

I can't believe anyone at all would not have a fan on in their DC rooms at the moment, it's 35 upstairs in my house today.

Cyclemad222 · 25/07/2019 18:39

We do not have any fans. Baby and a toddler. We survive. They just go to sleep and wake up with sweaty heads.

I hate fans, they make my skin tickle, I'd rather be hot.

ParrotsForLife · 25/07/2019 18:42

I’ve got a bag of peas in front of a fan in Ds’s room trying to cool it down a bit

AquaPris · 25/07/2019 18:45

I had a fan every night pointed at my face from the age of around 6/7.

We currently have a bedside and tower fan and air con unit. Our bedroom is ice cold Grin

Throughthenever · 25/07/2019 18:49

My 2 year old has a air con machine in her room. Had it last year as well.

Her room reaches 28 and only has a tiny window so only way to keep her cool. I check on her in the night and turn it down or off.

I am very jealous and If I wouldn't be uncomfortable I would sleep on the chair in there as well.

Thegracefuloctopus · 25/07/2019 18:52

Ds is 9 months and has a fan in his room pointing in his direction but above his height with a bowl of ice infront of it to create some cool air. Hes the sweatiest baby ive ever known, his room is 31 degrees and hes in just a nappy. The fan is deffinitly the reason he is asleep. He is more likely to over heat without it imo. I'll check temp when we go up to bed and he consistantly wakes in the night so will add a layer if needed. Last night i put a vest on him when we woke at 1am because temp had dropped from 27 to 25. Fan still on. If you followed every piece of advice you wouldnt be able to do anything

Wibblewobble99 · 25/07/2019 19:07

Our 2 yo has had a fan on the last two nights in her room. It’s on the lowest setting but seems to help keep her cool. It’s pointed at her cot on an ikea stool so at her level but about 1.5 metres from the cot. Saved us when it thundered as the fan drowned it out!

taylorowmu · 25/07/2019 19:09

You don't believe?

Well I must be lying when I say I have literally never had a fan on in my DC rooms. Ever. 2 of them are adults now.

Roughasabadgersbum · 25/07/2019 19:49

I have fans in both children's rooms. Ages 6 and 2.
I also have a fan in my room. It's just too hot otherwise.
I do have children who are like small radiators!

raspberryk · 25/07/2019 19:57

*You don't believe?

Well I must be lying when I say I have literally never had a fan on in my DC rooms. Ever. 2 of them are adults now.*

So they aren't being exposed to the hottest day on record as small children then, seeing as they're adults now.

In my opinion not having some way of moving the air and attempting to cool down in 30 odd degrees is tantamount to abuse and or neglect.

I can't cope in this weather without a fan and neither do I expect my children to, last year when we had the warm weather I couldn't get a second fan so the kids had it.
