to take a 50k paycut

Bit if a WWYD I suppose.

I currently earn lowish 6 figures and a really really interesting job has come up but it's a significant paycut, around 50k at least (and more if I assume I get my max bonus in current job).

It has a somewhat better pension and 2.5 days more holiday a year. Probably similar hours to what I do now and similarly flexible.

In many ways I think this might be complete madness but honestly it is working for my absolute dream organisation.

As a family we could afford it but would mean some cutting back and definitely saving less for DS' future.

Feels selfish to even consider it really but I'm sooooo tempted!

So, would I be unreasonable to go for this job?

No as you already earn way more than the cast majority of people.

MrsBlondie · 25/07/2019 14:06

Cant even imagine earning 50k let alone taking a 50k paycut.

Alsohuman · 25/07/2019 14:07

You’re very brave to ask that here. Shame it’s too hot for popcorn.

IVFNewbie · 25/07/2019 14:07

is this 50k b4 or after tax?

Passthecherrycoke · 25/07/2019 14:07

I wouldn’t do it. You’ll have to sacrifice a lot for other people too- your children mainly.

It’s also hard to imagine the sort of role where you would be succsssful in the application process as you’re so over qualified?

heidbuttsupper · 25/07/2019 14:08

No. You should never take a job less than your current salary

RiddleyW · 25/07/2019 14:08

Before tax

Wouldn't necessarily get it but I'm not overqualified, it's more that they can pay under market because it's a nice role.

If it makes you happier and you can afford it, do it, are you currently unhappy?

dontdance · 25/07/2019 14:09

Maybe. Would it give you the ability to
Move into other areas / promotion ? I work in banking so I often see people
Moving to regulators or outside the industry, some come back having got skills they wouldn't get in our industry

redastherose · 25/07/2019 14:10

No one here can really advise you can they! Only you know the type of job, employer and precisely how much of an impact this drop in income would have on your lifestyle.

Do you really dislike your current job? It's very difficult to know how a move like this might go as whilst you might think now that they are a dream organisation its rare that things stay like that once you are there.

Do you know anyone who works there you can ask about the type of employer they are?

Definitely do as much research as possible into the job security before taking the leap if you actually do so.

AgentProvocateur · 25/07/2019 14:10

No, you should apply and negotiate a salary that is closer to your current one.

SagAloojah · 25/07/2019 14:11

Is there opportunity for progression into roles that pay more?

Passthecherrycoke · 25/07/2019 14:11

But it’s paying about 50% less Shock how nice can it be?
What would it give you that you don’t have now? That’s really important to you?

Zippyx · 25/07/2019 14:13

YABU.

The novelty will wear off eventually (maybe a year) and you'll end up thinking that the slight boredom was worth 50k per year.

The grass is not greener elsewhere!

Passthecherrycoke · 25/07/2019 14:13

“No, you should apply and negotiate a salary that is closer to your current one.”

No company advertising a 50-60k role is going to pay someone £70,80,90,100k to do it!

Flyingquestion · 25/07/2019 14:13

How much of a net pay difference would it be? And would you still be able to do some of the saving you want to do, but just less of it?

dayslikethese1 · 25/07/2019 14:14

I think I'd be worried about being made redundant from the dream job at a future point and then never being able to get my income back up to the previous level. Employers seem to look at last salary.

herculepoirot2 · 25/07/2019 14:14

Is the job less important to the business than your current job? Is it similarly senior?

Obviously you can do as you wish, but I would be reluctant to take such a large pay cut to do a similar job. People judge what you are worth by what someone pays you at the moment, not what they paid you the previous year.

StressyDressyHeels · 25/07/2019 14:15

I think you’d soon get fed up of the lack of luxuries on the lesser wage.

madcatladyforever · 25/07/2019 14:15

Im just about to take a massive paycut, not quite as much but not too far off and downsize a lot somewhere else.
I just don't need the stress any more and I need a reliable steady job with a pension so Im going back into the NHS as opposed to private work.
But then again I live alone, have only 10 more years left to work and nobody is dependent on me.
I'm not sure I'd do that if I had kids at home. Mine is an adult with a good job.

dayslikethese1 · 25/07/2019 14:15

Also, as a PP says above, just because it looks like your dream employer, you don't really know what it's like to work there.

bridgetreilly · 25/07/2019 14:16

YABU for posting such a vague post than no one can give advice worth anything, just so we all know you earn a six-figure salary.

Muzzyarker · 25/07/2019 14:17

Is this a joke
