to take a 50k paycut

RiddleyW · 25/07/2019 14:04

Bit if a WWYD I suppose.

I currently earn lowish 6 figures and a really really interesting job has come up but it's a significant paycut, around 50k at least (and more if I assume I get my max bonus in current job).

It has a somewhat better pension and 2.5 days more holiday a year. Probably similar hours to what I do now and similarly flexible.

In many ways I think this might be complete madness but honestly it is working for my absolute dream organisation.

As a family we could afford it but would mean some cutting back and definitely saving less for DS' future.

Feels selfish to even consider it really but I'm sooooo tempted!

So, would I be unreasonable to go for this job?

And to be honest the attraction of MN versus Netmums is that most posters are articulate, intelligent and write in full sentences. Hardly surprising then that a fair few will have managed to earn a few bob using those skills!

Isthisafreename · 27/07/2019 10:44

@MaisieDaisy1 - You’ve just proved that mumsnet is for rich people.

I think all that's been proven is that mn is for people. You have the begrudgers making snide comments, you have people who are irritated by the reverse snobbery exhibited by the begrudgers caning them out on it, you have people who have made a similar decision providing advice, and you have people who have not been in a similar situation considering how they might approach the decision and giving advice based on that.

suggestusername · 27/07/2019 10:47

Your happiness is worth far more than a minimal pay cut. It would be easy to reorganise your finances. I've no idea why you are hesitating.

MrsMiggins37 · 27/07/2019 10:50

YABU for posting such a vague post than no one can give advice worth anything, just so we all know you earn a six-figure salary.

This

Honest to god I’ve never come across such crass boasting about money as you get on this forum.

Notcopingwellhere · 27/07/2019 10:52

Kind of weird how many posters have managed to give quite comprehensive and useful advice then isn’t it @MrsMiggins37? Hmm

Isthisafreename · 27/07/2019 10:55

@MrsMiggins37 - Honest to god I’ve never come across such crass boasting about money as you get on this forum.

Asking for help about a major decision is not boasting.

LaurieMarlow · 27/07/2019 11:03

I cannot see a single comment from the OP that could be interpreted as boasting. Would anyone care to highlight them?

MrsMiggins37 · 27/07/2019 11:08

There is endless either open or stealth boasting about salary and money peppered throughout this forum. I find it very crass and vulgar personally. The OP could have just asked the question about the %age pay cut without mentioning the pay cut which she must know is already a significant amount, being around double average earnings in the U.K.

Isthisafreename · 27/07/2019 11:12

@MrsMiggins37 - The OP could have just asked the question about the %age pay cut without mentioning the pay cut which she must know is already a significant amount, being around double average earnings in the U.K.

Of course the amount is relevant. A 40% cut on a salary of 60k is very different to a 40% cut on a 500k salary.

I can only assume there is an element of jealousy on your part as there is nothing boastful in the op's post.

VenusOfWillendorf · 27/07/2019 11:14

I think it would be worth it if it was going to improve your quality of life outside of work - flexible work hours, shorter commute, not stressed if you are currently - basically if it would make your life happier and easier. You would still earn enough to not be worried about billls etc.
But if it is to have a more interesting work life, I'd ffirst look within your current organisation to see what changes you could make to make it interesting again ... either a new role, change in responsibility etc. Talk to your manager, chances are they would support you in that rather than lose you.

MrsMiggins37 · 27/07/2019 11:15

And the arse licking of the OP is beyond pathetic as well.

And no, I’m not “poor” or jealous. I just don’t discuss money somewhere like this.

LaurieMarlow · 27/07/2019 11:17

And no, I’m not “poor” or jealous. I just don’t discuss money somewhere like this.

So don’t. But who made you the boss of the OP?

You’re coming across as jealous I must say.

Isthisafreename · 27/07/2019 11:19

@MrsMiggins37 - And the arse licking of the OP is beyond pathetic as well.

I think it's sad that you seem to think only people who fit your narrow definition of acceptable are entitled to ask for advice.

And no, I’m not “poor” or jealous. I just don’t discuss money somewhere like this.

The irony. You are discussing money here Grin.

JustTheCrowsAndTheBeef · 27/07/2019 11:23

There is endless either open or stealth boasting about salary and money peppered throughout this forum.

I would genuinely love to know how you distinguish between people making factual statements about their income and budget and those who are making stealth boasts.

I was also brought up in the belief that it is vulgar to discuss money but frankly it is something that we all need to get over if we ever want to address income inequality and the gender pay gap.

IsobelRae23 · 27/07/2019 11:29

No company advertising a 50-60k role is going to pay someone £70,80,90,100k to do it

I once applied and was offered a 38k job and I turned it down, they kept increasing then salary to 72k- I still turned it down because they wanted me away from home mon-fri, when I had been told I would only need to be in the office 1-2 days a week, so wouldn’t work for me. So it’s surprising how’s much wiggle room some companies have!

Youaremysunshine6 · 27/07/2019 11:30

@MrsMiggins37 so where would you discuss money if you did want some advice? Genuinely curious. I agree that discussing money openly in real life can be vulgar, so surely an anonymous forum is a good place for objective advice. I think more people should be comfortable asking advice and considering their finances tbh.

Youaremysunshine6 · 27/07/2019 11:32

@JustTheCrowsAndTheBeef this. People need to be more comfortable discussing money, could mean that fewer people get into difficulties because they’ve had no guidance or support and also encourages people (particularly women) to feel more confident about articulating what they want.

RiddleyW · 27/07/2019 11:34

That’s what I thought, only DH knows what I earn and he’s not a good person to ask because he’s not objective at all. I definitely disagree about people being unable to help, I’ve found a lot of the posts very helpful and they’ve raised some things I hadn’t thought of so thank you.

@Petlover9 - Agree with MrsBlondie, for most people it is but a dream

So what? I can't afford a mercedes. Doesn't mean that someone who can afford one shouldn't ask for advice before buying one.

AtillatheHun · 27/07/2019 11:54

What’s interesting about this place is that everyone will chat nicely about whether first class plane travel is worth more than business and talk about hibby’s air miles from his high stress job but the knives come out when women talk about earning a reasonable but not astronomical salary. It sometimes feels that this place holds deeply ingrained sexist views.

@RiddleyW good decision, and should you be tempted again by not for profit/ BBC / public sector again do also bear in mind that the admin support systems and expenses claims and team backup may we’ll be substantially less good. Basic irritations like the time and effort that goes into getting a box of paper clips or booking train tickets for work travel will fall to you, creating and distributing assets of whatever nature may we’ll become frustratingly complicated and time consuming as operating costs are kept to the bone and you’re cheap enough to do those jobs too now.

Rubbish. What would be the point in boasting about money to a lot of people the poster doesn't know and who don't know her.

You'd have to know someone quite well to be 'arse licking', surely? That was a horrible thing to say.

Certainly the op hasn't boasted, she gave some information in the hope that she would get some opinions. We're anonymous on here so we can discuss money.

Notcopingwellhere · 27/07/2019 12:15

@MrsMiggins37
I just don’t discuss money somewhere like this.

Hmm, if that were true then you would not have clicked on a thread with 50k paycut in the title, would you? You were very welcome to scroll on by Hmm

Lifecraft · 27/07/2019 12:38

There is not a correlation between "working hard" and "earning lots of money"

There can be. Not many people earn lots of money without working hard, and having worked very hard in the past to get to their high paid position.

Many people work hard for low pay. But lots of people are in low paid jobs because they are workshy, never put any effort in and do the bare minimum.

NoSquirrels · 27/07/2019 12:40

for most people it is but a dream

Well, yeah. I’m never going to earn £100K+, my household earnings between me and my DH are likely to never approach £100K unless something radical and unexpected happens! But I can still see the dilemma the OP has and I understand marginal tax rates and I’m a person with a family and a partner to consider who’s worked in different jobs, so I don’t think my own earnings or “dreams” have anything to do with it whatsoever.
