To get really annoyed by people who live in hot countries claiming that the UK is not hot

I have some relatives who are in Australia and I'm friends with some of them on Facebook. Apart from their finding the whole Boris Johnson/Brexit thing awfully amusing, they're generally nice people, but there's one of them in particular who can't bloody leave it alone if I post anything about the weather. The other day, I posted about how it was supposed to be the hottest day on record, and she was straight onto it with comments about "That's not hot, that's like a winter temperature for us, you Poms are so soft". She thinks 18°C is "freezing", btw Hmm

I'm only mildly irritated by this, but I just don't get why people do it. I know it's ridiculously hot over there and all the wildlife is venomous and all that, but what is the actual point of telling people that all the time when they're just trying to have a whinge about being too warm?

OP posts:

I just checked my heater, it says the room is at 17 degrees and both my son and I are wearing warm zip up jumpers, long pants, socks and long sleeve shirts. I am not one little bit hot and actually just got up to turn the heater up.

isabellerossignol · 25/07/2019 05:29

Stoppin that's shorts and T shirts weather here Grin

Just goes to show that we're all used to what we're used to, and until you acclimatise nothing much can change that.

FiveShelties · 25/07/2019 05:41

We are in the middle of winter here in NZ and we are having daytime temperatures of 16C and people are saying it is cold. I am a Lancastrian and 16C in winter is fabulous for me. It all depends what you are used to I suppose.

I suppose OP it is like the Daily Mail saying 'today it will be hotter than Bermuda, or Madrid, etc etc', whenever the sun shines.

LadyGodivasCat · 25/07/2019 05:57

I live in the US, and have lots of sympathy for those complaining about the heat! Where I live is very dry, and very hot in summer (96f today) and cold in winter (lots of blizzards and temperatures well below zero). Even though I’ve lived here a number of years, and have aircon, I still start to wilt once the temperature gets above 60f. So it must be pretty unbearable in the UK just now.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 25/07/2019 06:02

On a recent thread a poster basically said that anyone in the UK outside of London was not allowed to complain about the heat because obviously they live on the surface of the sun compared to the frozen tundra the rest of us are surviving in.

I'm Scottish, anything in double figures is hot to me!!

TapasForTwo · 25/07/2019 06:05

@Lockheart I don't know where you live, but it hasn't been warmer than average everywhere. I am in South Yorkshire. We had a nice week in February, a nice week in March and a lovely Easter. May was meh and June was cold and wet and a complete washout. July has been pleasantly warm with temperatures between 18/19 and low 20s. The last few days have been high 20s with 34 degrees forecast for Sheffield today.

ivykaty44 · 25/07/2019 06:06

I had an Omani lad living with us for 6 months. He slept with the window wide open every night - in March! He was so used to air con he wanted to be as cold as possible to sleep 😂 he admitted he found are “living” in the uk much warmer than home as there wasn’t A/C which he was used to everywhere

WindsweptEgret · 25/07/2019 06:08

Is it ok for Australians currently in the British heatwave to say 'nah, it's not all that hot'?

User24689 · 25/07/2019 06:12

Well, I've just moved here from Australia. It's really hot. It's going to be 38 here in the south east today. I'm used to while summers of that temperature.

I also have loads of smug Aussies on my fb laughing about the UK being hot.

It's really really bloody hot! The UK isn't set up for this heat so there's no escaping it. In Perth I could spend a whole day in 40 degrees and barely notice as my house was air conditioned, my car was air conditioned and my work was air conditioned!!

What's really pissing me off is there's nothing to do here! Been trapped in with the kids for 2 days. None of the parks have shade! Our local play centres aren't air conditioned. The one activity I'd booked for this afternoon has just been cancelled due to the heat. I understand why but it's very frustrating. If these temps become the norm here I don't know how the country is going to deal with it!

Might need to move back to Aus for the air conditioning Grin

"Is it ok for Australians currently in the British heatwave to say 'nah, it's not all that hot'?"

No.

WindsweptEgret · 25/07/2019 06:18

That must be the difference upthewolves, we never even had ceiling fans so I'm used to it.

Kismett · 25/07/2019 06:36

Everyone swore to me that it never gets hot here. I think with climate change, people are going to have to reset their thinking a bit!

swingofthings · 25/07/2019 06:41

I've lived in Spain and the US Midwest where it gets much hotter than the UK and people didn't moan about the heat half as much people do here. Its a fs t thst it really deostn get that hot in the UK. I appreciate that it is a matter of what you are used to but saying that the UK doesn't really get hot is a fact. People who get annoyed when this is mentioned is be s'use they want to be free to whinge.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 25/07/2019 06:43

🙄

User24689 · 25/07/2019 06:46

@windsweptegret I have older friends in Aus who grew up without air conditioning and still don't have it, they are often found gardening in 35 degrees 😁 I do think your body gets used to it.

Interestingly my young Aussie born children are not bothered by this heat at all. I'm keeping them out of it but they would have happily been playing out all day yesterday and haven't once mentioned feeling hot.

daisyboocantoo · 25/07/2019 06:56

I can honestly think of other things to get annoyed about, personally.

On the flip side, I do get a bit Hmmwhen the UK grinds to a halt EVERY SINGLE WINTER.

It's as if no one has realized that it happens every single year and panic because it gets cold and there might be snow. I live in an alpine region and snow is dealt with very quickly and efficiently.

I also hate it when people post about the weather. Yes we all know there is weather. We can look outside.

vintanner · 25/07/2019 07:00

When you post anything on FB that you know this person's comments will annoy you, just create a list of who you do want to see your listing, that way you still get say how you feel, but they can't see it.

You don't 'unfriend' them, but it is then your choice if you want them to see it or not. I do this all the time.

Lockheart · 25/07/2019 07:00

@TapasForTwo this is based off the Met Office data for England as a whole. England has had above average temperatures and below average rainfall for much of this year.

Klobluchar · 25/07/2019 07:03

I live somewhere that has hot and humid summers but we have aircon at home and everywhere, so it’s fine when you get used to it. I wouldn’t like to experience prolonged periods of heat without it, I don’t envy the UK now. But chin up, it’s only for a few days and takes your minds off the country going to hell in a handcart

TapasForTwo · 25/07/2019 07:07

Lockheart I suspect the data is skewed by the higher temperatures that London "enjoys".

PinkFlowerFairy · 25/07/2019 07:10

I think some Australians are just unfortunately brought to make fun of the Brits regardless. And like to get a dig in whenever you can. It does get boring after a while. Just ignore it like you would a little brother or sister.

twixorsnickers · 25/07/2019 07:13

Oh yay, another Australia bashing thread. We have no seasons, our fences are ugly, we have venomous wildlife everywhere, we complain about the weather constantly, and we have shit attitudes because the Simpsons wrote some stupid joke.

Lots of lovely generalisations and made up crap as always.

(And yes I'm someone who struggles with heat, hence not going abroad in summer, staying in when its hot. Its fine, but ny friends know I wont join them for a beach day in the day time this week (Ive gone down in the evenings. )

When others say 18 is cold (my perfect weather!) I don't say "oh you dont knoe cold" as Im not a dick. The irony of people on this thread simultaneously saying "oh you dont know heat" whilst thinking 18 dwgrees is cold/not liking it if Brits arent cold at 18 makes me smile.

Klobluchar · 25/07/2019 07:16

British people take the piss out of other countries over things they feel precious about, like cups of tea and the English language.
