To get really annoyed by people who live in hot countries claiming that the UK is not hot

I have some relatives who are in Australia and I'm friends with some of them on Facebook. Apart from their finding the whole Boris Johnson/Brexit thing awfully amusing, they're generally nice people, but there's one of them in particular who can't bloody leave it alone if I post anything about the weather. The other day, I posted about how it was supposed to be the hottest day on record, and she was straight onto it with comments about "That's not hot, that's like a winter temperature for us, you Poms are so soft". She thinks 18°C is "freezing", btw Hmm

I'm only mildly irritated by this, but I just don't get why people do it. I know it's ridiculously hot over there and all the wildlife is venomous and all that, but what is the actual point of telling people that all the time when they're just trying to have a whinge about being too warm?

oh for gods sake no some of us cant bloody enjoy it magnums

thedayofthethreeMagnums · 25/07/2019 13:40

we get that GabsAlot, we've been hearing about the HEAT Shock since March...

I especially love the posters who feel superior because they force themselves to live in a miserable fridge all winter - switching the heating on during the day? are you nuts! And AT NIGHT?! what a waste! - and then feel too hot in the summer. If they had kept a comfortable temperature in the winter, they wouldn't be that bothered now.

GabsAlot · 25/07/2019 13:51

Dont know what your point is-and no i dont have my heating on at night

spacedone · 25/07/2019 13:56

Ugly fences? You're talking about colorbond? Which was made to withstand our climate?! 🙄

Naldorian · 25/07/2019 14:02

I prefer a cold environment to a warm one. I'd always rather be a bit too cold than a bit too warm. My mum is the opposite - hates being cold, loves warmth and summer. I like winter and cuddling up in a blanket, every time I visit her house in the winter she has the heating on and it's sweltering. People prefer and feel comfortable at different temperatures.

Aragog · 25/07/2019 14:14

It's not even that humid in the UK. Yes it feels sticky but its not that bad ime.

London today, although hot, is only 29% humidity. In Sheffield where I am it's in the early 40%s.
In Florida today is it 79% humidity. Ive known it to be much stickier than that too. TBH our humidity isn't much different today than Las Vegas is going to me - a place known as having dry heat.

My post got fecking deleted for breeching talk guidelines on a lighthearted thread, Mumsnet? Seriously?! Have you lost every grip in the office?! IT WAS A JOKE.

Jesus. echt quoted it anyway so there. She got the joke as I’m sure others did. The ‘heat’ is clearly getting to them in MNHQ.

No idea what you're about.

ElphabaTheGreen · 25/07/2019 14:34

I articulated my position on not liking weather extremes versus whinging about not liking weather extremes at 11:35.

echt requested it be re-written in Standard Australian at 13:02. If that wasn’t supposed to be risible, then I’m confused.

Therefore I re-phrased it in a succinct, sweary version, which I take Standard Australian to be (FOR COMEDIC EFFECT) at 13:13.

echt quoted it at 13:20.

Mumsnet deleted it because Netmums must be taking over but echt had quoted it by then anyway.

Lunatics. Asylum.

echt · 25/07/2019 14:36

I was entirely serious..

Commuting into and around London in this heat is absolutely not compatible to driving around in your AC car, to your AC office, with your tiled floors and swimming pool at home.

People who like hot weather seem affronted when you voice an opinion to the contrary. I love damp, drizzly weather but I don't tut and roll my eyes when someone says they don't!

ElphabaTheGreen · 25/07/2019 14:45

What on Earth is ‘Standard Australian’ echt? You have completely thrown me. I genuinely thought you were joking. Did you report that post then?

PookieDo · 25/07/2019 15:37

The main bypass road into my town has begun to melt yipppeee

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 25/07/2019 15:42

God, this thread has got weird. I wish I hadn't mentioned that my relative was Australian now, as it wasn't my intention for it to turn into an Aussie vs Brit thing. To anyone who feels like they've been "got at", I apologise. I was merely trying to assert my right to have a traditional British weather-whinge in the comfort of my own Facebook page, without someone coming along and spoiling it by being rational. I didn't know you could limit the audience for your posts, though, so thanks to the pp who mentioned that a while back. From now on, I shall only share my thoughts on the prevailing conditions with my fellow whinging Poms.

My MIL is here this week from Portugal, she just came in from a couple of hours in the garden and said how hot it is. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Other relatives and friends from Portugal have said on hot days like last year, "oh if you think this is hot you should see how hot Lisbon was last August...." Etc. I think it depends on the personality of the foreigner tbh. Some people just like to know better and dispute everything!

janesmore · 25/07/2019 17:39

I've been working outdoors all day in central London and although it's been very hot it hasn't been that humid and it hasn't been unbearable. Travelling on tubes and buses was grim though. It's only been like this for a couple of days and it's going to cool down tomorrow. It's really not that bad!

TapasForTwo · 25/07/2019 17:53

It's been 35.2 in Sheffield today!

Oblomov19 · 25/07/2019 17:59

Too hot for me. 35 degrees is just too hot.

PookieDo · 25/07/2019 18:01

39 in SE
No breeze
A lot of the local shops their fridges broke
Large supermarkets sold out of most cold things
The roads melted in areas
Traffic seemed really bad tonight

GabsAlot · 25/07/2019 18:07

Its ok Pookie we must enjoy this

TapasForTwo · 25/07/2019 18:08

We have aircon at work so it wasn't a problem. They have relaxed the dress code for this weather as well, and someone went out and bought a crate of ice creams.

I know that not everyone is so lucky.

PookieDo · 25/07/2019 18:11

@GabsAlot

I am trying to enjoy it but I am not sure what part
I’m home now with my feet in a bowl of water I had to strip off my wet clothes
Need to cook some tea - who wants to cook? I’ve been out all day already in another oven of an office and my feet are swollen from walking up and down the stairs so often
Dog needs to get out at some point but pavements are too hot to walk on

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 25/07/2019 19:23

We don’t have extremes here and I think we are absolutely obsessed by the weather probably because it’s unpredictable and secondly we are quite socially awkward but we can have a good moan about the weather with strangers this is acceptable conversation Grin

Today has been very hot for the UK but it’s still just very warm compared to the heat in many countries and we are not equipped for it as we don’t really need to be (but many places are not because costs are so high)

Bellasblankexpression · 25/07/2019 21:12

The steps leading up to my flat melted today 🤦‍♀️ - just the couple leading up to the main entrance door.
I guess that’s the thing - yes today might not be as hot as other places or it might be the norm for other places but for us it’s not. Nothing here is designed for it.
The tube was disgusting today, the rail overhead lines sparked from overheating and caused fires.
That’s why it’s not comparable to other places, because the situation is different.
People can tell me it’s not that hot until they’re blue in the face, to me today was unbearably hot. My flat got up to 40. The stairs have melted (not into a puddle but they are warped and dipping/bowing now).
I guess the point is it’s not a competition, it’s not who is worse off, different people are going to have different opinions and to me, this is really hot and it’s not the norm for the UK so of course we aren’t going to be used to living our every day lives in it

GabsAlot · 25/07/2019 21:49

Sorry @pookiedo i forgot to quote someone else who said weve got to stop moaning and enjoy this
