To feel really down when the hot weather hits?

I know SAD is generally meant for cold weather but seriously, when the weather gets extra hot I really struggle.

It's a mixture of being uncomfortably hot and feeling like I'm the odd one out.

Everywhere you look everyone is out having fun and enjoying the sun and I'm sitting home hiding.

So, AIBU to wish for Autumn?! 🙈

Another one who loves Spring and Autumn.

This heat just makes me sooo cranky and down. My 3 and 1 - year olds are definitely pressing my buttons today and it's not even lunchtime yet! Doesn't help that I've been up since 5.30 (when it was still blisteringly HOT).

I honestly don't understand how anyone can say they like this weather. And for those saying it's just summer.. it's NOT. Summer in the UK should be early 20s. With some rain.

It's just impossible to actually do anything, particularly with young children. We're an out and about type of family and I would much prefer to bundle everyone up and go out in the rain/cold than this.

Treaclepie19 · 25/07/2019 12:24

That sounds like me @ravenshope
I'll be making sure to go to the cinema if it carries on!

Not long left now fellow sun haters!
Tomorrow is looking to be at least 10 degrees cooler here.

I've found my people!

I absolutely detest this weather, I have to have a fan on me at all times and I've even bought a mini rechargeable fan that I carry around in my handbag.

A few of the things I do to help myself and my DD's cool down;
1 - Cold water bottles like hot water bottles but frozen (with a cover/towel on to prevent freezer burns). The kids and I sleep with one of these.
2 - Frozen ice pack/bottle of water in front of a fan helps a bit.
3 - Feet in a bowl/bucket of cold water helps to cool us down.
4 - Wet a towel with cold water and lay on the floor for the dog.

DH keeps saying we should enjoy it but it's fine for him as he loves this weather. I don't care that we only get a couple fo weeks/few days it's still too much for a country that isn't built for this kind of heat! Plus with houses in the UK generally built to keep heat in it can get unbearable very, very fast.

Woofbloodywoof · 25/07/2019 12:47

OP you are not alone! I am only truly happy when the mercury hovers somewhere between 16-21 degrees c. Much happier with a cold extreme rather than a heatwave-
I am literally counting the weeks until autumn arrives and we have those lovely chilly mornings and evenings and week afternoon sunshine. BLISS.
Also, this weather is confusing my garden. One minute she’s all parched and wilting and the next overrun with weeds that seem to grow a foot overnight. Poor thing. She’s experiencing the weather equivalent of going out someone off Love Island.

Rain forecast for my area tomorrow .....

One more sleep 😴

WashingMyHair247 · 25/07/2019 12:54

I'm always ill as heck through summer. I have light sensitivity affecting my eyes. I pass out from heat (this starts from waaaay before high summer). I puke. I think I have hyperhydrosis; it's all year round but fml when it gets past 20° because there's no coming back from this. It makes me feel really depressed because I feel like I'm unable to breathe the warm air. And being overweight has made it worse. But even before the weight gain, having such large ladylumps has made me feel I'm suffocating behind them.
Argh I hate you, summer.

user87382294757 · 25/07/2019 13:11

We seem to have a summer cold and tickle cough. Youngest wants to bake biscuits! In this heat!

hartof · 25/07/2019 13:19

I actually said to my husband a couple of weeks ago that I think I have SAD in the summer. I really enjoy autumn/winter, summer I hate that feeling that you have to make the most of it and be outside at every opportunity. I also hate that it feels like it never goes dark in the summer. I tend to be grumpier in the summer.

WellGoshDarnIt · 25/07/2019 13:21

I feel everyone's pain. I'm currently on a coach in northern France with fairly ineffective air conditioning. The temperature gauge at the front is showing 43c. ConfusedConfusedConfused
Angry - this is my face, and my ankles haven't been this swollen since I was 9 months pregnant.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 25/07/2019 13:39

pillbox

My dh loves this kind of weather too. He’s just made everyone go for a hike in 29 degrees (and it’s humid). I just feel so sorry for people down South who would kill for “only” 29 degrees.

Thekingintheeast · 25/07/2019 13:45

I love the autumn and winter. I grew up with a stepmother who took it as a personal insult if you weren’t outside “enjoying” the weather (I.e sunbathing). I’m Scottish and living in London and find the heat really tough. I long for chilly crisp mornings....

Screamanger · 25/07/2019 13:54

Treaclepie19

Alaska still has frosts in June, would that be cold enough?

BossAssBitch · 25/07/2019 13:56

I love 'normal' UK summer days, 25 is perfect for me. THIS though. This is NOT normal, this is energy sapping, sticky, oppressive, stuffy yuckiness Angry (hot AND angry) Grin

Treaclepie19 · 25/07/2019 14:04

@Screamanger yes!! Sounds amazing 😍😍

@user87382294757 we've had that tickle cough all week. It's horrible :(

@Woofbloodywoof that made me laugh 🙈 My thoughts are with your garden!

Same here OP. Actually makes me feel ill. My heart skips with happiness when I check the weather and see it's going to get colder.

The80sweregreat · 25/07/2019 14:58

I refuse to go out in it.
I don't care if I'm miserable or whiney but nobody will make me enjoy intense heat,
Chub rub setting in now.
Lovely! Not

ILearnedItFromABook · 25/07/2019 15:09

YANBU. Of course, where I live summers are long, hot, and humid, so we have air conditioning (life would hardly be worth living without it), but I almost feel like I'm trapped indoors for months out of the year. Even here, there are plenty who live for summer, while I start daydreaming of autumn at the end of spring!

I sleep so much better when it's cool, and I love being outside without worrying about mosquitoes, wasps, and snakes! Also, many of my hobbies (quilting, crochet, knitting) involve producing things that are best used in cool weather.

dayslikethese1 · 25/07/2019 16:57

I love summer but I have to say I am a little baffled by the behaviour of some Brits as soon as the sun comes out (lying out all day broiling themselves etc.)

dayslikethese1 · 25/07/2019 16:58

I'm fair so always very careful in the sun. I got heatstroke once in the Dordogne and never want to again.

WellTidy · 25/07/2019 17:05

I am suffering too. I have anhydrosis, which means that my body doesn’t sweat. So it is really hard for me to cool myself down. The best thing to do is to prevent myself from getting too hot, but that isn’t always possible.

I swell loads. I have to drink masses and masses to cool down, which I can’t get rid of by sweating, so I swell more and wee loads. The pressure builds in my head so I get headaches. I have to take paracetamol daily, sometimes multiple times a day, to get rid of the headaches. It exhausts me so I cry. I then can’t sleep, despite fan, water etc as it is simply too hot.

I can’t wait for it to rain!

The80sweregreat · 25/07/2019 20:17

It'd gone all windy and dark now like you get in horror movies ! Brewing for a storm

TiggeryBear · 25/07/2019 20:27

You're definitely not alone! I hate it! I suffer with hyperhidrosis & this heat & humidity is making it so much worse. Moving at all is horrible 🥵 I almost want to hibernate through the summer months. It's made worse by having an extremely active 3 year old who wants to go on bike rides etc all the time! But both she & her 1 year old brother are so fair skinned that even with factor 50 on they start to burn within 10 minutes of being outside & they're understandably going to be too hot in long sleeve tops & leggings all the time.

igotdemons · 25/07/2019 20:55

YANBU OP. I struggle hugely with any hot weather (I must be hot blooded as I don’t even need to wear a coat in winter, I never feel cold). I get bad headaches I can’t get rid of (even with migraine killing pain relief), constantly sweating, feel lethargic, no appetite. I’m supposed to be on a diet but that’s gone out the window because I can’t bear to cook the stuff I can have because my kitchen is too hot as it is! I’m living on cold snacks just to keep myself ticking over. I’m just sitting by the fan (which is on full blast) and hoping for the rain that’s forecast over the next 3 days to bring the temperature down. To top it off, I also have a skin condition that gets better in the sunlight...but I can’t bear to sit out in it because I hate it! FML 😫

loubielou31 · 25/07/2019 20:59

I love a good spring or autumn day, not too hot but not too cold, enough sunshine to feel brighter and no requirement to uncover any flesh at all. Today is too much for me!
