Heat related: AIBU to not know what to eat?

Mitebiteatnite · 24/07/2019 14:54

Salad. That's all I've got. Quiche and salad, cold meat and salad, salad and salad?!

AIBU to ask you what you eat when it's too hot to cook? I refuse to turn the oven on, and even the gas hob is too much. The sun is full on our kitchen from 4 onwards, but even before that it's too hot in there.

Sandwiches.
Poached salmon.
Cereal with ice cold milk.

Teacakeandalatte · 24/07/2019 14:59

Its salad here too with an ice cream for dessert.

BishopofBathandWells · 24/07/2019 15:00

Tuna jacket potato. Nuke them in the microwave rather than oven bake. Serve with salad, obviously.

BishopofBathandWells · 24/07/2019 15:01

And yes to cereal and cold milk! I had a bowl of Weetabix for dinner last night, it was bloody lovely.

PawPawNoodle · 24/07/2019 15:01

I just had a falafel (gently nuked in the microwave) and houmous wrap with some salad in. Very civilised.

ParadigmGiraffe · 24/07/2019 15:03

cold meat, olives, cheese, nice bread, veg roasted earlier in the day - or salad.

babysharkah · 24/07/2019 15:03

I had a cold Thai salad for lunch with chicken and noodles - so good!!

RosemarysBush · 24/07/2019 15:05

We’ve got fajitas tonight but that does involve the hob.
What about cold rice/ pasta (cook it in the morning when it’s cooler and chill for later). Add feta chees/tuna/ tinned sweet corn/ olives/ diced peppers/mayo?

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 24/07/2019 15:08

Resisting turning the oven on here too. Our kitchen is unbearably hot as it is.

Mccain baked potatoes are delicious cooked in the microwave. Luckily my kids love them and are happy with tuna and sweetcorn so fairly healthy.

Ready cooked chicken from the supermarket eaten cold - with salad - sorry Smile

Fresh pasta only has to be plonked in boiling water for a couple of minutes. Serve with ready made sauce. Job done.

Feta, watermelon and mint (salad)
Greek-style mezze
Tomatoes, mozzarella and basil
Gazpacho
Iced cucumber soup
Cold poached salmon with dill and cucumber (salad)
Tend to drop meat and carbs when it is this hot and stick to things with a high water content

LadyPeterWimsey · 24/07/2019 15:16

Do pulled pork or something similar in the slow cooker which won't heat up the kitchen as much as the oven.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 24/07/2019 15:16

Habe I got a treat for you... www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3646039-Tell-me-about-your-salad

TarragonSauce · 24/07/2019 15:17

Yogurt,yogurt and more yogurt here.

GibbonLover · 24/07/2019 15:35

Last night, I put out a crusty seeded unsliced loaf, ham, cheeses, Philly, picked onions, coleslaw, salad, basically unmade sandwiches and OH declared it delicious, 'just like a buffet at home' and has requested the same again tonight. Suits me fine!

Spam88 · 24/07/2019 15:36

I'm just cooking normal food but eating ice cream while I do it to keep cool 👍

Mitebiteatnite · 24/07/2019 15:44

Oh mykingdom that was a treat!
I think I'm just going to get a load of bits for the fridge, as well as good sandwich stuff (not just bog standard ham or cheese I mean) and let everyone decide what they want for the next few days. I'll relax my 'I'm not making 4 different dinners' rule for a bit Grin
The DCs will probably like getting their own bits out anyway.

I was just about to a tesco order, but then I realised if I actually go there I can hang around in the chilled section for a bit, plus the air con by the entrance is a real treat on the way in Grin

Tonight, poached salmon bought from my local deli with asparagus (boil kettle, put asparagus into pan with boiled water, put lid on and leave for 5 mins or so. It’ll cook without the need to switch on the hob). I’ll toss the asparagus in M&S fresh pesto and olive oil or butter and then grate some fresh Parmesan over the whole delicious lot.

Mitebiteatnite · 24/07/2019 16:06

Single I wish I liked Asparagus. We've had loads popping up in our allotment and I've had to keep giving it away because I think it's vile. I accept I'm in the minority there. I also hate rhubarb, which we had tons of too. Typical.

We just eat normally...

Last night we had chilli con carne
Tonight we are making pizza's

Singlebutmarried · 24/07/2019 16:10

I’m just fed up with food full stop.

Most hated jobs:

Thinking up things to eat
Putting washing away

Mitebiteatnite · 24/07/2019 16:13

Oh @Singlebutmarried me too. I normally get a tesco order delivered every Monday, but Sunday morning I get so frustrated trying think of dinners for the week. We have a big list of dinners that everybody loves, so I'll usually pick from that but sometimes it's so boring!

OP posts:
Teacakeandalatte · 24/07/2019 16:15

Yes I had a lovely trip to tesco and enjoyed the aircon this morning and we are thinking of going again tomorrow.

Thekingintheeast · 24/07/2019 16:19

Threads like this make me laugh - and I mean this in the nicest possible way! I hate the heat (am Scottish and am Viking to the core - I’d be happy if it were winter all year) but I have no issues with cooking or eating when it’s hot!!

sackrifice · 24/07/2019 16:25

I had ice cream for lunch and dinner last night.

Tonight it will be a halloumi sandwich, with ice cream chaser for my dinner.
