To hang out for hours in the supermarket chilled section to stay cool?

MamaOomMowWow · 24/07/2019 13:41

I hate this weather. I feel physically sick with the heat. Tomorrow is supposed to be even worse.

I am currently walking endlessly around the chilled section of my local supermarket whilst my 9mo naps in the pram. The milk section seems to be the coolest. I'll buy something before I go and spend a lot of money in here generally.

Any clever tips for staying cool or suggestions of other places with air con? My well-insulated house is toasty in winter but bad in the summer and I'm worried about DS sticking his fingers in a fan (and we're too cheap to buy a Dyson blameless one!)

Is it a big store? Maybe pick up a deckchair and install it next to the cream cakes??

WellTidy · 24/07/2019 13:44

DS and I went to the cinema yesterday for the air con. I think he has seen five films in a fortnight. We will be going again tomorrow Smile

Oh yeah lol ... there was a comedy programme in America called Love and Marriage about a family called the bundies they took their deckchairs to a supermarket 🤣 the only episode I remember ...

MamaOomMowWow · 24/07/2019 13:46

It's a massive store at least. I think it might look more odd in a Tesco Metro!

We've been indoors all day (me and 5 year old). Feel so bad as it looks amazing but neither he nor I can take it. Made our one outing early this morning and hurried back indoors for the rest of the day. Feel awful that I'm wasting the holidays already!

Yes I escape to the supermarket for coolness too! Not soo much here (I have a big old Victorian house it’s quite cool) but in Spain we would look at each other and try and think of something we needed as an excuse to go to the shops.
Put your feet in a cool bowl of water at home if you get a chance to sit down.

BowiesJumper · 24/07/2019 13:50

The little sainsburys next to the station this morning (after a hot bus ride) was BLISS.

Coffee shops (costa/starbucks etc) should have air con and you can sit there with a frapuccino at your leisure!

We have a tower fan (not dyson!) which little fingers are safe with.

Just popped down the road to Iceland and it is even cooler!

My son just finished school, we're off to the retail park to spend time in Tesco and next Grin

Halloumimuffin · 24/07/2019 14:15

Seriously I popped out from the office to get a card at lunch and came back dripping. At home my fan is my saviour.

Treaclepie19 · 24/07/2019 14:23

I used to do this when mine was a baby.
Today he's had a haircut and then a costa. Nice and cool.
Home now and melting!

saavi · 24/07/2019 14:26

If I was suffering I would spend my day in our (newish) shopping centre.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 24/07/2019 14:39

I just went to the gym. There's no air con. The air was like sweaty soup.

userabcname · 24/07/2019 14:41

Yanbu. My toddler was born in very hot weather. We researched all the local pubs / cafes / restaurants to find where had air con and just hopped from one to the other during the day (supermarket cafes and wetherspoons are the best for air con btw). I think some soft play places have air con too but not all.

thedayofthethreeMagnums · 24/07/2019 14:49

I think it's the worst thing you can do.

I love this weather, I feel so much happier, bouncier, energetic when it's sunny and warm
BUT I still find that leaving an air-cond cold place gives you a bit of a shock and it makes you notice the heat a lot more.

If you don't let your body getting used to the temperature, you will always be "too hot". A nice shaded place is the best place to.

belleshelles · 24/07/2019 14:49

Me and DD spent longer than usual in the freezer section of Tesco's, the temptation to climb into the freezer was strong. We've been sat in the paddling pool in the shade ever since and it's not quite the freezer section of our local Tesco's but it'll do.

LadyRannaldini · 24/07/2019 14:50

I loathe the shops that trumpet We have air con, then have the doors open!

putthetellyon · 24/07/2019 14:51

It's fine in the shade here, surely it is for everyone else too? Providing you don't have to do anything

AnotherEmma · 24/07/2019 14:51

YANBU!

I took DS to a shady park with a paddling pool this morning. Being in the shade with my feet in the cold water was bliss, and DS enjoyed it. There were loads of parents with young kids including little ones, a 9mo would probably like splashing in the water and if you managed to get them to nap you could lie down in the shade Smile

I also plan to hang out in places with good air con over the next few days - work (I did miss the office air con when it was boiling during my mat leave!) but maybe cinema, museum or soft play. I have asked around local parents to find out which ones have decent air con!

JassyRadlett · 24/07/2019 14:54

I grew up in Queensland. Cinemas and libraries were the go to in summer.

One particularly steamy summer I saw Titanic three tiles, just because it was nice and long....

babysharkah · 24/07/2019 14:58

I love he weather, grew up in the Middle East, but Jesus, the tube is horrendous!! It's a form of torture.

Orchidflower1 · 24/07/2019 15:05

Dc had their check up at the dentist and it was lovely in the air conditioned waiting room. Sod’s law though it’s the one time we went in bang in time. I did dither booking for the next appointment though!

ISayWhatNow · 24/07/2019 16:44

Dd 17 yrs is currently out in Spain staying with a Spanish family. It's 43 degrees where she is and the house has no air con or even fans ShockShockShock I have no idea how she is coping!!

AnotherEmma · 24/07/2019 17:26

It's probably built differently. Thicker walls and external shutters to keep the heat out.
