Why all the anti school/teacher threads?

shithappens123 · 23/07/2019 23:04

I’ve not been a member for long but I’ve noticed the amount of school bashing threads on MM. it’s almost as if some patents see the school as an enemy not as organisations wanting to educate their children the best they can.

I’ve read threads on how they gleefully complain about teachers (seems more in primary education though) and saying how incompetent they are when they have no idea how hard they work.

Teachers are fair game on here and it’s most disturbing.

Oh yes, I forgot what you were like

And yet you remember all these threads we’ve had discussion on? Sure.

And if there are very real issues with specific rules then there are ways to complain and raise concerns in the appropriate way, not kitting your kid out in obviously non uniform items, telling them they don't have to follow certain rules or sanctions and then whining about how mean it is when your DC gets picked up for their behaviour and rude attitude.

The idea that people must either support this bizarre pick n mix approach where parents think they decide what rules apply to their child or they're some kind of horrible child hating bully is a weird features of posters on various threads who seem to have an issue with their child doing as they're told.

Exactly. It’s not the black shoes or the gym kit. It’s wanting your own way and not getting it.

Allthebiscuits · 24/07/2019 12:19

Good parents have no cause to complain.

MonstranceClock · 24/07/2019 12:26

Wtf is that supposed to mean??

Allthebiscuits · 24/07/2019 12:29

Their kids do just fine because deep down we all know it's all down to parenting.

Part of being a good parent is knowing when and how to raise issues and concerns with a school in a reasonable fashion.
I've met many an excellent parent who have had justifiable concerns about school issues.

Me too.

I have probably met about the same number who - at least in my view - seriously needed to get their house in order.

I think you're just being deliberately thick.

Allthebiscuits · 24/07/2019 12:37

Nah, I don't buy it. The issue will be at home, every time. But that's good, chance to be better, you really are in control.

Kenny33 · 24/07/2019 12:39

A lot of bullies are attracted in to teaching though.

Our class bully at school is a teacher. A couple of notorious bully posters on mumsnet are also teachers.

Maybe people think they need calling out?

herculepoirot2 · 24/07/2019 12:40

Of all the teachers I have worked with in three schools, two were genuine bullies.

MonstranceClock · 24/07/2019 12:42

Whatever Grin Not sure what sort of home issues caused my daughter to be bullied and the teacher to blame her for it, but OK. Note taken!

mbosnz · 24/07/2019 12:44

I think a number of parents have a very adversarial attitude to schools and teachers. Then there's the parents who think that their child's education is entirely the responsibility of the school and they shouldn't have to make any contribution whatsoever.

There are definitely disfunctional schools, and incompetent (or worse) teachers. And there can be personality conflicts between students and teachers, and teachers and parents.

Knittedjimmychoos · 24/07/2019 12:46

Kenny your right they are.
It got really bad a few years back, education, primary, and general threads about education were dominated and shut down by some notorious vicious posters.
They seemed to have quieted down though, maybe mnhq gave them a rap 😂😂👇

Aren't those dc the very ones who need the most care, help and support from the school Confused

Good schools are usually those where there is a symbiotic relationship between the school and the teachers. Ie all on same side.

shithappens123 · 24/07/2019 12:49

There’s always two sides to every story, unfortunately on mm we tend to hear from the parents only. For example, dd says teacher picking on her - reality dd is disruptive in class and refuses to work... of course they can’t actually believe that their own offspring is to blame so they blame the teacher.
Fortunately I’ve always had good classes and only teacher older students but I’ve seen some of my colleagues get hit, sworn at but the parents still saying their child did no wrong.

Sometimes. But that doesn’t mean the school doesn’t need support from the parent as well.

Based on what, exactly? Compared to what other jobs?

I'll save you the trouble. Fuck all.

I agree with you OP. However I've also seen nurses get a good pasting.

@shithappens123

Teachers definitely do not deserve vitriol the vast majority are excellent.

However teaching is a profession that critical feedback does not seem to be allowed. This is due in part because of the government constantly using education as a football. Plus the reduction in funding has had a massive effect on SEND and inclusion.

My child has ADD and dyslexia over year 4 and year 5 we have both been driven to the point of a nervous breakdown. I have been accused of telling my DS too much about his disabilities, exaggerating his problems and told I was imagining the issues. My DS has been ignored, not allowed to use assistive technology and left to believe he was useless.

His year 6 teacher has been beyond fantastic he has taken him from around 2 years behind and got him through his SATS passing all easily. This was achieved by simply listening to my DS and me he’s been allowed to use assistive technology, breaks when DS has needed them and not ignoring his obvious difficulties.

So there are fantastic teachers but there are also teachers who shouldn’t be allowed in a classroom and they are being allowed to get away with their bad practice.

@Knittedjimmychoos

Yes, teaching does seem to be a cabal. Ganging up, covering up and bullying whistleblowers.

Maldives2006 · 24/07/2019 13:00

@shithappens123

I was also told I wasn’t interested in my child’s education, I just objected to him smashing his head of the sofa because he couldn’t remember what he needed to do at home.

echt · 24/07/2019 13:02

bullying whistleblowers

What is one of those when it's at home?
