To still use buggy for 3 year old DD?

DD goes to nursery four days per week. She turned 3 in April.

We recently bought her a scooter, which she loves. But at the end of the day at pick up she often says she is too tired to ride it and we have tears and tantrums and her demanding to be carried all the way home.(Due to our working patterns, 90% of the time DH does drop off and I do pick up so it's me who gets the pleasure of this).

The walk home from nursery is just under half a mile and there is no way I can carry DD, my work bag and the scooter so the journey home is torturous.(Just to add to the fun I'm also pregnant!)

I think we should reintroduce the buggy. DH is adamant that DD is too old and points out that very few of her peers use a buggy now, they all walk or use scooters (and he is right).

I honestly don't know if I am being unreasonable or not to think that it's ok to keep using the buggy for a while longer. Is she too old? AIBU?

I used it with mine occasionally right through to 5, nursery was fine as it was pt but late afternoon I would usually put dd2 in the pushchair and dd1 would climb on the back if we needed to go out

lifeinthedeep · 23/07/2019 20:00

I’d just make my life easier while pregnant and just use the buggy. It’s not your dh’s decision as he’s not the one who’s pregnant and picking her up!

Jimdandy · 23/07/2019 20:01

My son is almost 4 and we still use it. We’re going on holiday in Feb and I’ll still be taking it!

CatteStreet · 23/07/2019 20:04

I use it with my 3yo, though I've been slowly dropping/reducing it. I use it when we go on trips out involving walk/train/changes/walk etc so she doesn't get too tired to do the actual activity. And I have been using it to take her to nursery (she's not confident yet on a balance bike) in the mornings to save time, but walking home when we're not in a rush. I'm not sure in your case, though, that I'd reintroduce it for half a mile's walk when you're not in a hurry. Would she walk rather than using the scooter?

cakesandphotos · 23/07/2019 20:04

Oh crumbs use it! Once baby comes you can have a buggy board but until then I would definitely be taking the easy way. She can always walk until she says she's tired

MyDcAreMarvel · 23/07/2019 20:04

If no special needs then yes three is old for a pushchair.

Digestive28 · 23/07/2019 20:05

We have a 3 year old and still use it, not all the time but when tired or hungry (as can sit and eat a snack). Not all the time but often enough to not get rid yet

BlackeyedGruesome · 23/07/2019 20:05

Once put an unwakable reception child in a buggy.

Camomila · 23/07/2019 20:07

I have an exact age 3yr old and a similar walk home. In normal circumstances I make DS walk though I'll carry the scooter for him if he doesn't want to ride it. I also have snacks in my bag to cajole him with.

But you are pg and it's boiling so just put her back in the pushchair if it makes life easier.

Trinpy · 23/07/2019 20:10

It's absolutely fine. I have a mile long walk home from preschool and although my 3 year old can do it, it takes forever (like 1.5 hours +) so I usually put him in the buggy, sometimes he falls asleep in it because he's so exhausted. They're only tiny still and its tiring being at preschool all day! Most days he does a mix of walking and going in the buggy; when he gets out, his 5 year old brother usually gets in for a ride Blush.

Bringonspring · 23/07/2019 20:12

Ahhhh it won’t last forever. Use the pushchair

You do know that your DD won’t want it and you’ll be stuck pushing it back..sods law

carmelsundae · 23/07/2019 20:14

My little one is just turning 3 however is very petite... Still in 1.5 year clothes. Her legs are short... We use the buggy anywhere that involves walking! Although small she still gets heavy when carrying her!!

Singlenotsingle · 23/07/2019 20:16

Why on Earth not? She might not want it, so you can use it to transport all the other gubbins.

FutureMrsC · 23/07/2019 20:16

Either use the buggy, or buy a bike with handle that you can push, also you can buy straps that attach to scooter so you can pull DC along on it. We have one for my DC so when he gets tired he's gently pulled along

Namelessinseattle · 23/07/2019 20:17

I’d tell him it makes more sense to cut out the carrying then the buggy.

Cornettoninja · 23/07/2019 20:18

3 is fine for using a buggy for longer distances or long days. I can see ours coming along for jaunts till she’s past four tbh.

I think people who get vapours from older children being in buggies either drive or have children who never discovered the power of just sitting on the floor and refusing to move. A combination of dd’s Size and my shitty back mean just getting her for twenty minutes uphill is beyond me.

Constance1234 · 23/07/2019 20:19

Most pushchairs go up to 20-25kg, so they are designed for up to 3 or 4 years olds. If it makes your life easier, just go for it! Especially as you are pregnant. If she was 5, I’d say definitely too old, but 3 is still tiny!

Malyshek · 23/07/2019 20:20

I'd use the buggy while you're pregnant, if it makes your life easier.

And after the baby's born you can explain to your daughter that she's now a big sister and not z baby anymore, and her sibling needs the buggy so she has to either walk or use the scooter.

gingajewel · 23/07/2019 20:20

I still use it as I can’t stand the whining of “mom pick me up” every five seconds and then the tantrum when I refuse! Using a pushchair cuts out that stress so why wouldn’t I? You don’t see six and seven year olds going to school in buggies.....three is still so little!

Gruzinkerbell1 · 23/07/2019 20:21

Oh god no, use the pushchair OP! If your DH really doesn’t like it tell him to rearrange his working hours so he can have the pleasure of pick ups.

Tavannach · 23/07/2019 20:22

Have you tried chocolate buttons?

Myshoesarenew · 23/07/2019 20:23

I used our buggy today for my 5yo who has just had his tonsils out. I got a ton of bad looks but I don’t really care because people don’t know the full story. It’s hot and I wanted him in the shade and not exerting himself. And I wanted somewhere to put the shopping.

I also use the buggy daily to take my 3yo to Nursery. Again, it’s about 0.5 miles, but it’s up a big hill and I need to go at a decent adult walking pace and not a 3yo dawdle. We go out without the buggy at other times depending on destination and situation.

coffeeturner · 23/07/2019 20:24

Use the buggy. My neighbour still uses one picking hers up from nursery, and it's literally a 2 minute walk!

Malyshek · 23/07/2019 20:24

I think people who get vapours from older children being in buggies either drive or have children who never discovered the power of just sitting on the floor and refusing to move.

The country where I live atm has a culture where kids are treated like royalty all the time. I do get shocked when I see 5 year olds still in their strollers.

Apparently this makes the lives of the parents easier because then the kids stay put and don't run around... But children are supposed to run around !
Babies are never left on their own, always in someone's arms. Any tantrum and toddlers get whatever they want.

That creates a whole generation of entitled brats.

mogtheexcellent · 23/07/2019 20:26

We used it till DD was 4.5 and had finished her first term at school. It was either that or carry her and my back would be broken.
