Put out some water to help the hedgehogs and other wildlife. My local rescue is inundated with hedgehogs at the moment. Mostly abandoned dehydrated babies. A lot don't make it Sad

Leave food too if you can. Any cheap dry cat food is good. If you have no food, don't worry, just leave water. Leave lots of dishes scattered about your front garden and back garden and remember to fill them before it gets dark.

Other things that can help:

Try and make sure fences have gaps so the hedgehogs can garden hop.

Be careful when gardening and leave plenty of cover for wildlife to escape under.

If at all possible don't use slug pellets and other chemicals around the garden.

But most importantly, get the WATER ready for tonight and help our prickly friends stay healthy and feed their babies ❤

I think dry is best but I’ll need a proper adult to back me on that!
We had a lovely moment last year when our cat found a hedgehog in the garden and seemed to fall in love with it. Lots of blinking Smile We put out some cat food and they shared it! It was adorable.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 23/07/2019 17:43

Yes apparently they shouldn't be out in daylight. I saw one a few weeks ago and ran to grab a box so I could catch it and check it was ok but by the time I got back it had gone. The next day our neighbours found one dead in their garden so I assume it was the same one Sad.

They are beautiful creatures. So sad they are in decline. Dogs and other wildlife attack them and of course roads are a huge issue as gardens and public areas get less friendly towards them and they have to cross roads to find food.

Our cat is scared of them, he comes running indoors when they appear Grin

Done. Thanks for the reminder OP.

I always have a huge dish of water out all year anyway, mainly for the birds who do like their baths.. A huge lady blackbird sat in it for a good 5 minutes today Smile but i put clean water in it every day, so hedgehogs and other wildlife are more then welcome!

I cant put out catfood as i'm discouraging the local farm cat from getting my wild baby rabbits!

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 23/07/2019 21:00

Baby rabbits 😍

Thanks for the heads up OP, have just gone and put down a big container of water. Smile

wizzler · 23/07/2019 21:35

We have put a bowl out.. and some cat food too. Had a regular hedgie visitor last yr but not seen him since about November

SabineUndine · 23/07/2019 21:42

I always keep a bowl of water outside in summer, for my cat and any other cat visitors. Not sure I get hedgehogs tbh.

thaegumathteth · 23/07/2019 23:15

Done ✅

Dieu · 23/07/2019 23:27

Aw man, I would do this, with the water and cat food and everything. However our garden is so high up off street level that I just don't think we'd ever get any. Thanks for raising awareness though, OP. Poor wee hedgehogs.

PickAChew · 23/07/2019 23:30

We have an occasional dgehog visitor always leaves glittery presents for us :D

Bird bath has been changed 3 times today. The buggers keep shitting in it!

Osirus · 23/07/2019 23:34

We have a hedgehog living in our garden; our entire front garden is a wildlife haven, much to the distaste of my neighbours I’m sure!

We have a water bowl (which said hedgehog uses, I see it in action) and do put out cat biscuits which are usually eaten by other cats. Always make sure the water is available and saw lots of slugs in the garden yesterday, so hopefully he or she is doing fine.

Pumpkintopf · 23/07/2019 23:40

Good reminder op, water out here Smile

AngeloMysterioso · 23/07/2019 23:43

I would, but the only thing likely to take food off my 3rd floor balcony is one of the fucking hundreds of winged terrorists gulls that live round here, and they can get to fuck as far as I’m concerned.

DeepDarkWoods · 24/07/2019 00:02

Done.

llangennith · 24/07/2019 00:02

I did this today. And now it bucketing down. Thunder and lightning!

TamzinGrey · 24/07/2019 00:07

We know that we have a couple of hedgehogs in our garden and always leave several dishes of water out for them. Over the past couple of weeks our security cameras have picked up loads of little hogs running across our front lawn and under our gate every night. Word must have got round that there is water to drink in our garden, so the poor things are probably coming from miles around. Please please put water out everyone.

Knittedjimmychoos · 24/07/2019 00:14

Done op thanks for the reminder.

alittlerayofsunshine · 24/07/2019 00:17

Absolutely on board with this. Always put water out. Plus, I have soaked my plants (LOADS of them) in water, and there is excess water in wee puddles on the patio. Smile

I do put cat food out, but the neighbourhood cats eat it. Sad

Still, I do leave water. Smile

HairyDogsInUnusualPlaces · 24/07/2019 00:22

What a great reminder. I will go out with some dishes of water now.

Whitelisbon · 24/07/2019 00:28

I've switched our outside tap on to drip. We realised when it needed repaired a couple of years ago that loads of wildlife was loving the dripping water, so, when it's hot, it gets switched on to drip overnight.
It gets used by hogs, cats, the owl, and I don't know what else!

Disclaimer - we are in Scotland, where there is no water shortage (rather, we have shit loads of it) and we are not on a water meter. Don't do this if you are!

SpringIsSprung1 · 24/07/2019 00:31

We've been doing this every evening for a while now. Water and cat biscuits. Bedroom is above porch where we leave food and water. We can hear them snuffling and grunting and eating rather noisily. They always leave a poo for us tooGrin We still love 'em!

TheMadGardener · 24/07/2019 00:34

We've got several visiting hedgehogs and one living in our hedgehog house. I have a night vision trail cam which records hedgehog videos although it needs new batteries! They eat dry cat food sometimes mixed with dry hedgehog food. They have a water bowl and also drink out of the wildlife pond (which has a slope at one end to enable animals to climb put easily). Love having hedgehogs in the garden!

Thegreymethod · 24/07/2019 00:35

We spotted one in our garden a few weeks ago so started putting water and cat food out for it, now every night without fail it comes for more, the children think it's the most amazing thing ever and have even named him (and won't go to bed till they've seen him 🤣) when we went out for tonight's hedgehog spotting session there were two! Very happy and excited children, we go away next week and they're really panicking about who will feed him (now them!) love them though we'll miss it when it's time for hibernation.
