Put out some water to help the hedgehogs and other wildlife. My local rescue is inundated with hedgehogs at the moment. Mostly abandoned dehydrated babies. A lot don't make it Sad

Leave food too if you can. Any cheap dry cat food is good. If you have no food, don't worry, just leave water. Leave lots of dishes scattered about your front garden and back garden and remember to fill them before it gets dark.

Other things that can help:

Try and make sure fences have gaps so the hedgehogs can garden hop.

Be careful when gardening and leave plenty of cover for wildlife to escape under.

If at all possible don't use slug pellets and other chemicals around the garden.

But most importantly, get the WATER ready for tonight and help our prickly friends stay healthy and feed their babies ❤

Will do. I'd give anything to have hedgehogs in our garden. We have loads of hiding spaces and safe places for them, a pond with a shallow sloping end to walk towards for a drink, but I've never seen one and our massive slug problem suggests we don't have any (never use pesticides).

Stillstrawberrywater · 23/07/2019 16:21

My Mum's neighbours found a nest with baby hedgehogs the other week. I'd never seen of baby hedgehogs before that.

elfycat · 23/07/2019 16:25

I leave a plate with water out most of the summer. I place a few pebbles in the centre so bees etc can get out if they fall in.

I also carry water and sugar in case I find a weak and dying bee on the pavement. I usually settle them on a flower after the rescue. Had one lovely bumble curl up on my hand and die last week, I thought she'd be fine as I've saved them from looking worse but she just wouldn't drink.

I'll leave cat food out, but I'm sure my cats will eat it themselves.

Ronsters · 23/07/2019 16:33

I'll leave some water out, thanks for the post.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 23/07/2019 16:34

We have dishes dug into in the borders level with the ground so the little hedgehogs can reach.

Look for spots where you usually get puddling when it rains and make use of those. Our driveway has a couple of big pot holes so that type of thing is perfect for water as they'll be used to looking there for water.

My husband has just made a hedgehog home for the ones who come into our garden! Leaves food and water for them too

Xiddling · 23/07/2019 16:37

Yanbu. If you fill the shallow dish with pebbles too it slows down the rate of evaporation and animals can dig under the stones to find water.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 23/07/2019 16:38

Aaah so cute. No hogs here (not UK) but we did have a skunk.... um, 'deploy' last night.

The smell woke me up through a 2nd floor closed window. Stinky bugger. Grin

TheJellyBabyMadeMeDoIt · 23/07/2019 16:42

I think we have then because I used to be overrun with slugs and snails, but not so much these days.

I'll leave some water out. Unfortunately if I leave food the local cat gangstas will be in the garden being mean to my kitties!

MaybeitsMaybelline · 23/07/2019 16:59

Will do! only rarely seen a hog here but Mr Foxy comes through every night (thanks Foxy for the poo you leave on the path).

Poppins2016 · 23/07/2019 17:01

I wish there was a like/love button on here!

Great reminder. I already leave water outside for my cats (they much prefer it to their indoor supply!) and the local wildlife enjoys it too.

malificent7 · 23/07/2019 17:03

Awwwww...they are cute!

SushiTime · 23/07/2019 17:04

Will do it right now so I don't forget Grin

Throckmorton · 23/07/2019 17:04

How low do the sides of the bowl need to be? I have some broad dishes out but the lips of them are maybe a couple of inches off the ground

FuzzyPuffling · 23/07/2019 17:05

Our bowl of water is known as "The Cat and Hedgehog"!

Crochetymum · 23/07/2019 17:06

My friend fished one out of her pond today! She rang the vets and they advised to leave it in a cardboard box all dark until it calms down 😊. I'll leave some more water out tonight, I already feed my neighbours cat so there's always food and drink in my garden x

LifeIsGoodish · 23/07/2019 17:14

I leave peanuts out for the hedgehog. We rarely see it, but there's a run under one fence - a sort of polished earth slide - and we've agreed with our neighbour never to block it. I leave peanuts there, and at the base of a low wall where we occasionally see the hedgehog snuffling along. I'll put water there, too, tonight.

LifeIsGoodish · 23/07/2019 17:14

Unsalted peanuts, of course.

For those asking about size of dishes, here's a ultra cute video of a hedgie drinking so you can see the type of dish that works.

If you think your dish is too deep, dig a hole in soil (or lawn if you don't mind!) and sink it in.

Look at his little face. He is LOVING that drink ❤

slipperywhensparticus · 23/07/2019 17:22

What kind of cat food wet or dry?

SunshineCake · 23/07/2019 17:24

I need to change the dish!

YesQueen · 23/07/2019 17:25

I'll put water out. I have enough "this is not my cat" moments without adding cat food to it Grin

Snugglepiggy · 23/07/2019 17:35

I always leave food and some water out as we had a hedgehog wandering through when we first move in a few years ago.But that was in the daytime and apparently that means they are starving and struggling if out then. Now I have a hog house and a separate one for food but yet to know if it's hogs eating - something is .Would love to buy a wildlife camera but currently can't afford to.Thanks for the reminder to us all OP.I will go and put another couple of bowls out right now.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 23/07/2019 17:35

Dry cat food. Sprinkle it around rather than leave a pile so they can forage. Ours seem to like it under the trampoline so I chuck some under there.
