To wake sleeping baby to give calpol?

DD is 4 months and had her last lot of jabs today. She has been fine all day and hasn’t fussed at all. However her temperature has been 38 all afternoon and evening. Gave calpol at 5pm so she can have the 3rd dose now but she is fast asleep and will usually sleep through until 6am.

Would you wake and try to give a dose of calpol to bring the temperature down, or leave her sleeping since it isn’t bothering her? Doesn’t help that the bedroom is like a sauna with the hot weather!

I think if she’s still hot I’d wake her and give her calpol. Do it in the darkish room, lots of shushing and cooing.. she’ll prob go back to sleep.
Check on her overnight as well.
Well does you on having a 4mo that sleeps through!

Blgb · 22/07/2019 21:36

I'd say leave her, she can't be uncomfortable or in pain if she's sleeping. I'd only give calpol if she really needed it 38 is only slightly high. I've avoided it with my LO and his jabs cos I want it to work effectively when he really needs it so going to try and limit it

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 22/07/2019 21:37

I wouldn’t. There’s nothing actually wrong with a temp if it’s not causing any issue.

WhenZogateSuperworm · 22/07/2019 21:37

I’ve struggled to get the calpol in her as she won’t swallow it and just spits it out!

I know I am very lucky with her sleeping. DS woke every 2 hours at this age whereas Dd has slept for 8-6 for months now! Strange how they can be so different!

I didn’t wake my baby for the third dose of calpol but he didn’t have a temperature- I would wake in this case tho as you do have a temp

BazaarMum · 22/07/2019 21:37

No! A temperature of 38 is of no risk to her at all.

Advice these days is to give paracetamol for discomfort, not for a mild fever.

Let her sleep. She’s fine.

Tulio · 22/07/2019 21:38

I’d leave her for sure!
Although from what I remember at that age the reflex for sucking in their sleep means if you really wanted to, you could probably sleep a sneaky dose in while she’s snoozing. I’ve done that before 😂

Sciurus83 · 22/07/2019 21:39

Nope let her sleep for sure!

WhenZogateSuperworm · 22/07/2019 21:39

Yeh it definitely isn’t bothering her, she is a very chilled out baby!

I didn’t bother with the 2nd or 3rd dose of calpol after her 8 week jabs as she wasn’t unsettled and was asleep but her temperature stayed at 37 then.

Will she take it while sleeping? I've been able to give the occasional dose of calpol without them properly waking, can't remember 4 month injections though!

Aim to get the syringe down one cheek towards the back and less chance of spitting out that way.

RomaineCalm · 22/07/2019 21:46

I'd leave her. If she's sleeping she's fine. If she wakes you could give her a dose but otherwise just let her sleep.

Blossom28 · 22/07/2019 21:47

If she’s had the meningitis jab they say wake to give the calpol. It needs to be kept under control

Laiste · 22/07/2019 21:47

Personally i wouldn't wake her. If she's feeling a bit under the weather later she'll wake up and let you know and you can give calpol and then her milk ect. If you wake her and she cries she'll just get all hot again.

Have you got a fan you can point into room?

DD4 (now 5) was AWFUL with taking medicine. Never known anything like it - her older sisters were fine. We had to try to get it in in tiny tiny bits with screaming and retching over the smallest amount :( So stressful. Would only even attempt it if doc had said she needed it. Never for anything less than serious temp. Once she was old enough to have a bit of yogurt i would be able to smuggle the calpol into a small amount of that. But even then it was like a military maneuver - staying cheerful, reading books, shaking toys, not letting her see the bottle or the spoon or the yogurt coming. Ye Gods i don't miss those days.

We were told to wake for 3rd dose as otherwise fever can develop in night.

newnamenewbrain · 22/07/2019 21:50

My kids have all been vaccinated by the same nurse and everytime she says don't worry about waking them for Calpol. Just give when they're awake for their own comfort.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 22/07/2019 21:51

I would definitely wake her for her final dose.

WhenZogateSuperworm · 22/07/2019 21:54

@newnamenewbrain yes the nurse today told me not to bother waking for doses if she was sleeping, but it’s the fact that she will sleep all night now. If it were day time and I knew she would be waking soon anyway I would be more comfortable leaving her.

Going to retake her temperature now and then see if she will take it without waking.

My ds hates medicine and I struggle to get it in he’s 1 and we use the 6+ calpol instead he only needs 1.25 ml then

Excited101 · 22/07/2019 21:55

No! Don’t wake her! Calpol is for pain, she’s not in pain- she’s asleep.

WhenZogateSuperworm · 22/07/2019 22:05

Temperature was 38.5 so I’ve managed to get her to take the calpol while sleeping. Wish I had tried that with the other 2 doses which she spat straight out!!

Oly4 · 22/07/2019 22:45

Calpol is not just for pain, it’s to bring down high temps. And it’s not true that sleeping babies are just fine. Babies can sleep and have a temp of 40. Four months is very young. When my lo was that age I wasn’t even allowed to leave the hospital with a temp of 39!

Sandybval · 22/07/2019 22:59

Glad you managed to get some Calpol in, after the men b combined with the others they do recommend getting the 3 doses in as a preventative for fever rather than just for discomfort. The 12 weeks the advice is just if they seem in pain as the men b isn't given. Hopefully your little one is back to normal by the morning :)

WhenZogateSuperworm · 23/07/2019 05:39

Thanks everyone. She has just woken up, still feels warm but temperature is 37 so happier with that. Will keep an eye on her but it’s going to be so warm today I think everyone will be suffering!

OP posts:
Gracie300 · 23/07/2019 07:08

I’d leave her, if she isn’t happy she’ll let you know!

Gracie300 · 23/07/2019 07:09

Didn’t see last update - glad she’s ok!
