All inclusive holiday irritations....

CupoTeap · 22/07/2019 16:04

On holiday and in the restaurant......there is a huge block of butter put out each session with a knife to help yourself with.

I am getting more and more irritated by the people who insist on scraping a bit of butter off with this knife and then back to the butter to repeat before putting the knife down.

JUST PUT SOME ON YOUR PLATE.

Anything else I should be looking out for to annoy me GrinGrinGrin

(I'm actually having a fab time and am very relaxed 😎)

@Yogagirl123 so what you mean is you aren't a fan of shit AI? No, me neither. I've never worn a wristband in my life.

The last meal I had in an AI hotel was lobster cooked by a Michelin starred chef on a beach. No kids shitting in fountains or fatty meat to be seen.

Again - no idea why people generalise about AI. It's a peculiarly MN thing.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/07/2019 18:49

In my experience adults only AI is better than family orientated AI.
DH and I once checked into a hotel to did we had been upgraded to the Adults Only section... Proper cocktails in glasses served to your sun lounger, breakfast and lunch from a menu (dinner was in the main hotel), quiet pool instead of loud children... Since it was 2 nights away while grandparents were visiting (we lived near a popular Mediterranean holiday resort) the upgrade was greatly appreciated.
I've decided that the worse bit about holidays is Other People wherever you go!

thentherewascakes · 22/07/2019 18:50

With coeliac disease and other severe allergies, you would be INSANE to think about eating from a buffet

why insane? It depends on the buffet.

Why would it be less safe to go to places where the food is cooked in front of you, and you can see that nothing dangerous is added to meat/fish/eggs? You can always request separate (for example) gluten-free bread and crackers, and separate salad to ensure it's fresh from the kitchen and hasn't been touched.

Some "gluten-free" eateries in this country still haven't understood that serving tongs MUST be gluten-free too. When you have an allergy or disease, you have to be vigilant constantly. The right buffets are not specially dangerous.

CollaterlyS1sters · 22/07/2019 18:51

The main thing that does my head in about AI is spending your entire holiday in one place. Dinner at "home" is one thing, but lunch too? Don't people go out anywhere?

countrygirl99 · 22/07/2019 18:52

I would never go AI. DH would be in heaven with non stop food despite being type 2 diabetic. We wouldn't be speaking by day 2 and on the point of divorce by day 3.

CollaterlyS1sters · 22/07/2019 18:53

@thentherewascakes have you ever seen how people behave at a buffet? How long do you think that food will remain uncontaminated?

Buffets are unbelievably bleurgh. Just no.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 22/07/2019 18:54

I don't think we eat and drink enough to justify AI !!! Oh I wish I had never seen this thread! I have grimaced from start to finish it all sounds so bleugh!!! So now I am stuck and have to sta rt all over again for my perfect set up for my october break...forewarned is forearmed so I thank you all for your horror stories!!!

IrmaFayLear · 22/07/2019 18:54

Again - no idea why people generalise about AI.

Exactly. There is AI and there is AI. There are sad-looking unappetising buffets in crummy hotels and there are 5* gourmet feasts, with chefs brandishing knives and no guest touching. Honestly the best food I have ever had was in a swanky resort in Mauritius. Or in Morocco.

LipSyncForYourLife · 22/07/2019 18:54

I remember trying to avert my gaze as a man walked back to his table with his plate loaded with pasta, Chinese, roast potatoes... and a slice of cake balanced on top! 😂

PrincessFiorimonde · 22/07/2019 18:54

This one may be a bit controversial, I can stand it when people pile their plate with loads of random foods that just don't go together.

Not an AI holiday, but a few years back DP and I were in Singapore and saw someone at the breakfast buffet put slices of melon and spoonfuls of baked beans (and nothing else) on the same plate. We still marvel at this.

shieldmaidenofrohan · 22/07/2019 18:56

This is our next AI. I doubt anyone's kids will be pissing in the fountains and if I want to I can order lobster in my suite at 3am with a bottle of cava, all included

Not all AIs are shit

lazymare · 22/07/2019 18:58

Self catering/fridge full of tapas/meze/cheap local booze, and eating out is bliss!

This.

I'm lying in my sc apartment in Spain right now, about to spend approximately 2 minutes preparing a tapas type dinner. Could not be arsed with all the people on an AI holiday.

dozy12345 · 22/07/2019 18:59

the terrible on tap wine is the worst thing about AI - the food is fine. It's so nice not having to think about meals before you eat them!

shieldmaidenofrohan · 22/07/2019 18:59

We certainly do

Somersetlady · 22/07/2019 19:00

Feeling bloated all the time because i do not have enough self control to take a reasonable portion of just one thing and have desert twice a day!

I only went AI once and felt so horrible the whole time i have never gone again.

BuggersMuddle · 22/07/2019 19:01

I did AI in the alps and it was pretty civilised (table service, choose your menu for the evening at breakfast) & reasonable selection of drinks.

Only thing I couldn't get my head around were the people who seemed to do nothing but hang about the hotel all day grazing / drinking endless coffee. It wasn't a lie round the pool type of hotel / resort at all, so I kind of wondered why they'd bothered (a big AI resort in Spain would likely have been a lot cheaper for a start).

I did go to an AI when I was younger where there were an awful lot of people who seemed to prioritise all day drinking & let their kids run wild. It rather put me off the big ones aimed at families.

M0RVEN · 22/07/2019 19:02

I’m gluten free and really surprised about the comments about how difficult buffets abroad are and why you need to eat only beige food.

I’m just back from an AI holiday in Greece and this is what I ate

Breakfast - omelette made to order, yogurt ( many kinds ) with fresh fruit, topped with nuts, seeds and dried fruit. Watermelon, fresh pineapple. I took my own Gf bread ( as I’m fussy ) and they brought me my own special butter from the kitchen ( due to breadcrumb issues ). Other places have had individual butter pats. Decaf coffee

They also had smoothies, freshly squeezed orange juice, GF bread (sealed in packets ) with a separate GF toasting machine . Lots of Gf choices on hot buffet ( beans, tomatoes, eggs, mushrooms, spinach, bacon) . They made GF pancakes to order ( yes in a clean pan with clean utensils ). Cold meat, cheeses , pickled veg , salads, coleslaw. Many types of coffees and teas, including herbal teas.

Lunch and dinner - amazing choices of soups , salads, freshly grilled meat and fish.

They also had Rice, potatoes and chips of course ( which i don’t eat because I’m low carb ( out of choices ).

Everything was labelled with allergens.

They were happy to cook me Gf pasta to order.

Deserts were more limited of course ( as in the UK ) but there was always a couple ( usually halva, various jellies, pannacotta, rice puddings and fresh fruit ). They would always bring me ice cream if I asked , or a GF cake ( they were obviously kept in the freezer and defrosted and warmed up for me ) .

I really can’t understand why anyone would need to eat rice and chips for every meal because they were GF. Yes of course there’s a worry about contamination, but that’s just as likely to happen in the kitchen during the preparation of a meal cooked for you alone.

Salad is much less likely to be contaminated than a plate of chips probably cooked in the same fat as breadcrumbed items, like chicken nuggets. It’s not like beige food repels breadcrumbs and vegetables and salad attract them!

Salads are usually on a different serving area from others so you only have to watch out for pasta and cous cous contamination. If you are worried you can use a clean spoon and take some from underneath .

I know it’s another complication is you are vegetarian. I eat meat/ fish but didn’t at breakfast and could easily have missed it out at lunch and dinner and still eaten well.

I am saying this in an effort to help BTW and not trying to be argumentative. Im sorry your child had such a bad time on holiday.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 22/07/2019 19:03

@shieldmaidenofrohan have an amazing time! We nearly booked that hotel and then decided we wanted to TTC and Mexico was a no go so we went to Mauritius instead.

@CollaterlyS1sters I've never found a type of holiday 'does my head in' at all - particularly if I've never been on one. But to answer you question, which wasnt really a question it was a judgement: some people dont go out, they like doing watersports, yoga, volleyball, cocktail making classes, cooking classes, relaxing by the pool, scuba diving etc in the resort. Others go out a lot.

The venom towards AI holidays is actually quite funny both for it being so painfully snobby and so painfully ill informed.

Mitzicoco · 22/07/2019 19:04

probably posted already, but people coughing all over the food.

CollaterlyS1sters · 22/07/2019 19:07

@shieldmaidenofrohan

We certainly do

But only such a small distance that you can be back for lunch?

Or you just skip lunch?

Or what?

blue25 · 22/07/2019 19:07

Feral kids running up and down to the buffet constantly, poking and sniffing all the food.

Adult only AI is a completely different experience and actually enjoyable.

shieldmaidenofrohan · 22/07/2019 19:08

Nevergot, we went to their 5* in Ibiza in June to see David Guetta's opening at Ushuaia, it was fantastic. Incredible food, branded drinks which were full strength, beautiful facilities and decent a la Cartes for an AI. we are doing 2 weeks in the family resort with DD and MIL then a week at the TRS. CANT WAIT

NeverGotMyPuppy · 22/07/2019 19:09

@CollaterlyS1sters as several people have explained on this thread they will very happily pack you a picnic.

shieldmaidenofrohan · 22/07/2019 19:10

Collateral, yes we'd just skip lunch. We'd have it out. We went to ibiza town in a recent 5 day trip and bar hopped for the afternoon then had a late dinner at 9.30

Chuffingchuff · 22/07/2019 19:11

I find AI quite handy with small DC, they get to try different things and if they dont like it they can have something else.
