Dp and Ds insisting he’ll be fine. I’m feeling twitchy. He has never been to Birmingham. We’d pick him up at Euston.

I think he would be fine - it's a straight forward journey

BalletTapNModern · 21/07/2019 21:27

Absolutely fine.

Owlbabie5 · 21/07/2019 21:27

Is it. What is Birmingham New Street like? We live in Devon but he is very sensible and takes the train to Devon cities.

Its a journey several of dd’s friends were doing from a younger age but they were familiar with Birmingham.

But the uni station is really easy to find. Finding platforms at New Street can be challenging but if you allow plenty of time there is always a member of station staff to ask.

TheChain · 21/07/2019 21:28

I do this journey all the time - from new street to Euston, it’s very easy.
I’m not sure how you think he’s getting the train from Birmingham uni to new street though? There isn’t a rail link between the two?

MrsGrindah · 21/07/2019 21:28

Of course! He’s 15..unless you are going to say he has particular difficulties it’s really no big deal.

Owlbabie5 · 21/07/2019 21:28

He’ll be 16 in Sep so should really be ok. Will have his phone.

Sorry I misread, for some reason I was thinking of Birmingham city uni

Dontrainonmyparade · 21/07/2019 21:29

It’s not a hard journey. I let my 14 y/o do a similar one (local station- new st - other city centre where he was met by relatives. New st is big but if he’s sensible and knows what time/which train he’s joining he’ll be ok.

Owlbabie5 · 21/07/2019 21:29

There is supposed to be a train station in the uni.

At 15 dd travelled from Stoke to Weston & had to change at Bristol which she’d never been to before and she was fine (apart from getting her Bristol stations mixed up!).

Owlbabie5 · 21/07/2019 21:31

What is the walk from the uni Muirhead building to the uni station like?

MirrorHope · 21/07/2019 21:32

There is a train station at Bham University it goes to Bham New St. New St is pretty brand new - it's part of Grand Central. In the Centre is a huge atrium with a huge board with details of all the trains and loads of staff. He will be absolutely fine - loads of schools kids on trains all the time.

Comefromaway · 21/07/2019 21:32

The uni/hospital train station is right in the campus and is really easy.

suze28 · 21/07/2019 21:32

Bham Uni station to New Street takes minutes and is always a busy train. New Street is big and clearly shows the connections plus staff there are very helpful. I'm sure it would be absolutely fine.

Comefromaway · 21/07/2019 21:33

Never been to that part, dd used to have hospital appointments at the NIDMS clinic & travelled from Chester.

MollyButton · 21/07/2019 21:33

There is a train station at the Uni! It is a simple journey - and if he feels confused he can ask a student or doctor who got on at the Uni station for help.
How confident of travelling by himself is he? Is he a London kid who is used to hoping on and off trains? It will be no issue.
It also isn't as if he can mistake New Street for "Five Ways" which is the only station between the Uni station and New Street.

SmartPlay · 21/07/2019 21:36

I don't see why someone of that age shouldn't travel by themselves, it's not a round the world trip. My daughter flew by herself from the age of 12.

DrDreReturns · 21/07/2019 21:36

I went to Birmingham. It's about a 5 min walk from the Muirhead tower to the uni station and there will be loads of people around who he can ask if needs be. I'm sure he'll be fine! New Street has loads of staff who can help him if required.

MirrorHope · 21/07/2019 21:36

Muirhead to Uni Station is 10 mins or so easy walk up through campus or round on the roads. If anything it's a very beautiful walk!

Alsohuman · 21/07/2019 21:37

My stepson travelled from Euston to Glasgow alone at 14. There will have to be a first time at some point.

NerrSnerr · 21/07/2019 21:39

Muirhead tower isn't far from the station he'll be fine. I used to have psychology and social policy lectures there 19 years ago and now I feel old.

Owlbabie5 · 21/07/2019 21:40

Fab he has booked it.

OP posts:
OKBobble · 21/07/2019 21:41

Of course he will be fine. He has his phone so can use googlemaps and I assume he can also speak!

BackforGood · 21/07/2019 21:51

Yes the University Station is right on campus, and then it is just 2 stops into New Street (University -> Five Ways -> New Street).

New Street is a fairly big station I suppose, but the boards are really clear and there are LOADS of staff around to ask.

I can't see that it would be difficult for most 15 yr olds.
