To think that Slimming World is a nasty organisation?

I'm not sure if anyone else is aware but Pinch of Nom, the hugely popular healthy eating and 'diet friendly' cookbook, have released a statement saying that they have been told to remove all mention of SW from their books and websites. This follows on from SW threatening to sue Aldi for launching a new healthy eating range that they thought was too similar to their own (they failed at this, obviously it's much harder to bully and intimidate a large international company...).

They've also made threats towards butchers and cafes for launching SW friendly produce. It's ridiculous. What are they so scared of? Funny that Weight Watchers don't have a problem with POM, also funny that SW haven't gone after WW for alterning their plan to make it similar to SW. See above about bullying large companies.

Ive long had issues with SW and believe it to be a money grabbing cult that doesn't really promote a healthier lifestyle, and this for me just proves it. Targeting small business trying to make a living just makes them seem really petty and nasty.

Don't get me started on all the wanky termonolgy they use like 'body magic' and 'image therapy either. How people sit through the meeting and don't piss themselves laughing at all that rubbish is a mystery?

"Or a banana? apple or dried fruit

Or even if you have a fancy for something sweet, eat a normal cake or biscuit."

In your opinion. Maybe she prefers the cake she made.

"What would be a better idea is to wean yourself off having sweet stuff. So that when you reach your goal, you just aren't that bothered about eating sweet stuff and puddings. Otherwise it's easy to just go back to your old eating habits."

In an ideal world, maybe, but consider that she may be losing weight in the way that suits here.

Ohnotanothernamechange · 21/07/2019 16:23

Have anyone tried the horror that is Slimming World Sausage rolls? Mashed up 'low syn' sausges wrapped in wholemeal bread. WTF is that all about?!. So rank.

If you fancy a sausage roll just have one. An actual sausage roll is not going to hurt you, nor is it going to make you balloon in weight.

As soon as you realise that no food is good nor bad, and everyting in moderation is fine then the scales will fall from your eyes.

"I am definitely not posh! It has nothing to do with class. "

This disgust with processed foods and not cooking things from scratch is definitely a class issue.

Ohnotanothernamechange · 21/07/2019 16:28

Who's disgusted with processed food? Im not.

The average SW criticiser on here. There's been comments on this very thread about Muller lights and mug shot pasta. A cake made with diet coke sound amazing to me, but was met with 'she should eat an orange'!

Nottheduchess · 21/07/2019 16:41

The obesity crisis is often mentioned on mn yet there’s a poster above saying have a sausage roll if you want one. That’s the fucking problem! Some people don’t know when to stop having the sausage rolls, so if they can replace that craving for a healthier version, surely that’s a good thing? Honestly. No food is bad? Yes, in fact lots of foods are bad for you.
I love the diet cola chicken from pinch of nom, it stops me ordering a Chinese.
I Iove the slimming world KFC chicken, stops me eating KFC. It’s not rocket science to see how replacing fatty meals with healthier versions help you lose weight. Does it taste exactly the same? No. But it’s a good enough compromise.
As for the branding issue, surely that’s not surprising. SW have built up a company and why should other companies benefit off the back of that.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 21/07/2019 16:41

The star week thing isn't just a SW thing though, you see it all over Facebook in all sorts of groups.
The synergy thing, well originally it was Sins so I guess someone in marketing realised what a bad idea that was.

Calories in calories out. I have done SW but it caused an unhealthy attitude with food for me. I'm sure others don't have this problem though.
What ever works for you is fine in my opinion.

Dawnofthebread · 21/07/2019 16:43

I did SW in the past, lost 2 stone, kept it off. I see pros and cons to it and I am not going to say it's perfect but a lot of the criticisms you see are not even part of the plan. Like unlimited pasta- if you are eating plates of pasta you are not following it correctly. You are supposed to have a third of your plate low calorie veg. It's basically the NHS eatwell plate, so I don't see how it's controversial. It feels like people can't win, they are made fun of for being fat and criticised for joining a support group.

The business side can seem heavy handed but to be honest that's their right to protect the brand and the only reason I heard of Pinch of Nom was SW. They have done really well using the name.

thentherewascakes · 21/07/2019 16:46

This disgust with processed foods and not cooking things from scratch is definitely a class issue.

how rude

Working class people like me are just as willing to cook from scratch than anyone! We don't all live off junk food and takeaways you know.

This.

Like I said earlier, I wouldn't be surprised if those looking down their noses at the people doing plans like SW are also the ones fat shaming people for being overweight in the first place.

Why does it even bother people? It has zero impact on you what plan someone else may or may not want to follow, or may want to eat. Why look down on someone who wants to eat a lower calorie version of a normal sausage roll? Someone who is trying to make a change? Shamed for being fat and then shamed for making changes... Hmm

Frouby · 21/07/2019 16:56

I have a love/hate relationship with sw.

It works for me down to a BMI of 26ish. I can't get past that point.

I hate the group bollocks and dont stay. It's bollocks. But some people love it. Each to their own. I did enjoy it when ds was tiny, dd at school all day and dh working away. It was somewhere for me and ds to hang out, talk about food, do some happy clappy shit and people tell me well done for losing weight. Don't underestimate the power of a group of people clapping you, slimmer of the week, slimmer of the month, year etc. It's all positive, people love that shit and if it helps, it helps.

The basics are actually OK. Eat 1/3 veg/salad/fruit. Have lean protein. Low fat and low sugar. It's calories in, calories out by filling up on low calorie foods. There are some oddities like avocado. Avocado still has calories in though. A mashed up banana still has the same calories as a while one. But if you blend a banana, some strawberries, some raspberries and 300ml of fat free yoghurt in a smoothie to drink, it doesn't have the same filling power as a banana, some strawberries, some rasperries and 300ml of yogurt. You've had a smoothie in one example. And in the other you have had a big bowl of fruit and a yogurt.

SW imo targets people who are obese or morbidly obese. Because it's easy to follow, they can follow the plan and never be hungry and still lose weight. I don't think it's possible for me personally to follow the plan and get to a bmi of 22. It's not struct enough.

I am a member at the moment because being weighed every 2 weeks makes me accountable. I only go every 2 weeks because I can't be arsed to go every week.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 21/07/2019 17:04

Someone who is trying to make a change? Shamed for being fat and then shamed for making changes...

This dawned on me a few years ago. Some people are put off going to the gym or doing exercise because they feel embarrassed. But still feel embarrassed for being unfit and/or overweight.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/07/2019 17:05

"Working class people like me are just as willing to cook from scratch than anyone! We don't all live off junk food and takeaways you know."

I never said that ALL working class people live off junk food and takeaways. In fact, I never even mentioned junk food or takeaways as the conversation was about processed food. There's definitely a class aspect to it in this country, whether you like it or not.

noodlenosefraggle · 21/07/2019 17:08

"I was confused why SW got such a bashing on here for a long time, until I realised why. Lot of MNers are posh and they look down on processed foods. I think it's quite s"mug for someone who obviously overeats to look down on people who like Muller yogurts, but I'm convinced that's what it is.
I agree its mainly a class issue on MN. Mostly middle class women who go to the gym 5x a week, have the money to go full keto and eat shedloads of organic meat and join rebelfit, with his weird slimming world obsession, even though he charges £££ to send out an incredibly similar diet sheet, telling you to go to the gym 5x a week. There is a lot wrong with SW, (which is why I dont follow it anymore) but the criticism on here smacks of snobbery. Most of the criticism isn't even valid if you do the plan properly. You cant eat unlimited pasta. Its unmeasured. You have to eat 1/3 of a plate of veg or fruit so if you pile your plate with pasta, you wouldn't have room for that. I wasnt doing it properly, so there was no point me paying to do it as I was too unmotivated. Luckily, I can afford to go low carb and pay for the nuts and the cream and the protein and the coconut flour, but lots can't. If yo have disordered eating, telling people to read some NHS advice ( which is the basis of SW) on the eatwell guide is not going to elp. Some people need the support of others and the tuning up to be weighed every week. Some dont.

Blankspace4 · 21/07/2019 17:10

Something about the title “A pinch of nom” literally makes my skin crawl. Excruciating

thentherewascakes · 21/07/2019 17:10

so the poor are fat and the higher classes are healthy.

right.

pelirocco123 · 21/07/2019 17:10

You do realise that pinch of nom is a money making business ? So why should they be allowed to make money of the back of someone elses business

RainbowPanda · 21/07/2019 17:11

Some people are put off going to the gym or doing exercise because they feel embarrassed. But still feel embarrassed for being unfit and/or overweight.

Yes and funnily enough people criticised Nike for having a plus sized mannequin displaying plus size exercise clothing because apparently it normalises obesity.

Err... what about providing exercise clothing that fits plus size people to, ahem, be able to exercise?!

Dawnofthebread · 21/07/2019 17:11

stopitandtidyupp It says on the next page, make a third of your plate the free food labelled S (speed i.e lower calorie) and pick them first as snacks.

user1511042793 · 21/07/2019 17:13

It’s normal for pon to be told what they have. They were leaning heavy into slimming world and many of their recipes are not ww friendly also we have not copied sw they have just made some proteins zero points. Hardly scoffing pasta and mugshots like sw does. I think your just being plain nasty. Pon got told to stop riding on the sw back. So what they’ve done well enough on it they don’t need it now.

PeoniesarePink · 21/07/2019 17:23

I was really cross when my diabetic nurse offered me 12 weeks free membership of SW. I don't agree with these companies being affiliated with the NHS at all. The consultants have no training in dietetics and are merely selling a formula though I do appreciate there are some very genuinely motivated ones out there.

My Mum has been a member of SW since she was 42. She's now 70 and still weighs the same Hmm I keep threatening her to add up what she spent over those years..............

Gwenhwyfar · 21/07/2019 17:27

"I was really cross when my diabetic nurse offered me 12 weeks free membership of SW."

What a bitch eh?

"I don't agree with these companies being affiliated with the NHS at all. "

Doesn't the NHS have its own slimming clubs? Should do anyway.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/07/2019 17:28

"what about providing exercise clothing that fits plus size people to, ahem, be able to exercise?!"

I guess they were complaining about the mannequin rather than the clothes. The mannequin doesn't have to be the same size as every shopper.
