Subway salad - put on weight.

I've been trying to lose a bit of weight recently for my holiday, nothing major, just cutting out treats and trying to be sensible.

Yesterday, with last minute running round with one thing and another - shopping, kids, car, pets vaccinations, pils and DH - I grabbed a salad from subway and that's all I ate.

I've put on a pound this morning! Aibu to think this just isn't fair?

Weigh yourself tomorrow and it'll probably be down again. Stay on track and don't be put off by short-term increases :)

SpoonBlender · 21/07/2019 12:30

"ate at the wrong time and then didn't want tea too close to bed"

Not that I'm against a near-fast day (5-2 did wonders for my sister), but this reasoning is nonsense. There's not any reason to consider an occasional late tea a "wrong time" - there's nothing magically extra-fattening about calories eaten just before bed.

If you have a badly shaped day, just have an appropriate amount food when you can fit it in.

Lemonbubbles · 21/07/2019 12:33

@EssentialHummus Exactly. I haven't been intentionally starving myself for any length of time, just trying to make the right choices. I picked a bed of lettuce and spinach, with tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, onions and beetroot, with a single portion of turkey breast.

I don't think this added the pound, I'm just disheartened to see the scales go up.

Already doing lots of the things advised, such as choosing water, avoiding sugary snacks, and eating smaller portions of lean meats and veg. Just had to make a choice yesterday as I was out.

I have been weighing myself everyday and as I said, there has been a steady decline in the number each day, until now! Just slightly miffed, but I accept how can we know why. Seems typical that when I basically fast, I see no results!

To those thinking I'm completely disordered or clueless, I'm not. I understand weight loss is about using the energy consumed and that patterns over time are what matter in the long run.

@SpoonBlender I meant the wrong time as in to fit in with getting home to my family. Skipped breakfast, got held up at the mot, had to rush to the vets, grabbed a salad at about 3:30 while in town and wasn't wanting to eat when DH was a couple of hours later. Then couldn't be arsed a couple of hours after that, just for me!

🤦🏻‍♀️

Weight naturally fluctuates throughout the day. Why are you worrying about 1lb variation?

Also, what was in the salad? Not all salads are healthy.

neveradullmoment99 · 21/07/2019 12:41

I don't weigh myself ever because of this. I just let my clothes and the fact they feel tighter / looser be my guide as I get totally de motivated when I see this on the scales. I may use a tape measure though if I want to check I am going down too! Never scales.

neveradullmoment99 · 21/07/2019 12:42

Also for women, could be fluid retention relating to periods. I was always heavier just before.

HopelessLayout · 21/07/2019 12:42

there is no strong evidence in humans that fasting has benefits beyond any other form of calorie restriction.

It depends what you mean by "strong evidence". There is certainly very promising preliminary research and plenty of anecdotal evidence. It's a fairly new line of reasoning so of course there is not a full body of research yet.

neveradullmoment99 · 21/07/2019 12:43

Its the menopause for me now and THAT is a completely different ball game :(

feelingverylazytoday · 21/07/2019 12:45

If you want to lose weight you need to cut carbs
No you don't. You need to create a calorie deficit by reducing calories and/or increasing energy expenditure. This is perfectly possible to do without cutting carbs. The Rosemary Conley diet works very well.

PixieLumos · 21/07/2019 12:46

I don’t really understand how someone who can happily just eat a salad and nothing else because they didn’t have time and then couldn’t be bothered to make anything would struggle to lose weight. This dieting thing should be a breeze for you. (I’m quite slim but never would I be able to make it through the day on just a salad). Im sure you’ll get there.

theworldistoosmall · 21/07/2019 12:52

My weight fluctuates depending on water retention and bowel movement. I'm also generally heavier in the morning. To get a true idea of my weight, I do it at night as long as I'm not retaining water and have had a bowel movement. And even then it's only every couple of months.

But generally, to monitor weight I use my clothes/notches on belts.

taylorowmu · 21/07/2019 12:54

Did you not eat at all for the rest of the week?

taylorowmu · 21/07/2019 12:55

Maybe I'm wrong for weighing myself each day

Sorry I missed that.

Yes you are wrong. Weigh once a week.

Soyloprohibido · 21/07/2019 12:59

Read up on weight loss

Problem with that is that for every page online that talks sense, there are 99 pages of diet woo and bullshit. Best thing to do is to speak to somebody who has lost weight and kept it off.

FattyPedalsFuriously0hPipNo · 21/07/2019 13:00

Bet you wish you'd never said anything OP.... Hmm

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 21/07/2019 13:01

'It concerns me more that you think a salad from a fast food outlet would be a healthy option though. Salads aren’t automatically ‘heathy’, especially ones from a place like Subway.'

Do they grow extra fatty lettuce and onions for Subway salads?

mindproject · 21/07/2019 13:02

OP - I'm with you. I stuck to a stupid no carb diet for an entire year, not a teaspoon of sugar or a crumb of bread, pasta, rice etc. I lived on tofu and vegetables. I lost nothing. Some people are born to be a bit fat.

Perhaps a balanced diet would have given better results. People are not born to be fat Confused

cheesenpickles · 21/07/2019 13:10

@Lemonbubbles I'm losing weight at the moment and yesterday I had a really healthy day. Lots of good food, right amount of calories and this morning I was up 0.1lbs. I am a daily weight but I don't focus too much on the day to day (daily weighing is for accountability reasons). Could just be salt, water retention, a big poo lurking. Don't get too hung up and that'll soon vanish along with more if you're doing the right things.

BettysLeftTentacle · 21/07/2019 13:11

Because they’re usually covered in added salts, sugar and other crap @itscallednickingbentcoppers. You have to look hard for a shop bought salad that isn’t and they’re nearly always marketed as a ‘healthy option’.

gingerbreadsprinkle · 21/07/2019 13:13

I lived on tofu and vegetables.

That is actually still high in carbs especially if you didn't measure your portions meticulously.

BettysLeftTentacle · 21/07/2019 13:14

And it’s the thought process of ‘but I ate a salad’ that’s completely wrong, not the fact that she ate a salad from Subway (even if it’s going to be healthier for you to toss your own leaves in a box).

lljkk · 21/07/2019 13:21

Question 4 those of you who reject 3500 kcal/day = 1 lb weight gain/loss.

Fitbit says I need about 2300 kcal/day. If I ate 4800 calories a day for 2 months, but only ate the "approved" foods (whatever they are, please list), do you genuinely believe I could lose or maintain my current weight?

If so, tell me the secret! Which are the right foods that mean calorie intake has no impact on weight?

MouthFullofGum · 21/07/2019 13:39

Huh? Why would you stick to a diet for a year when I’m assuming you saw no difference at any point?

Confused
