Subway salad - put on weight.

I've been trying to lose a bit of weight recently for my holiday, nothing major, just cutting out treats and trying to be sensible.

Yesterday, with last minute running round with one thing and another - shopping, kids, car, pets vaccinations, pils and DH - I grabbed a salad from subway and that's all I ate.

I've put on a pound this morning! Aibu to think this just isn't fair?

If you want to lose weight you need to cut carbs.

White carbs maybe. But cutting carbs isn't a good move, it will make you hangry and it isn't necessarily going to lose you weight. I eat brown/basmati rice/sweet potatoes/normal baking potatoes every day on above diet I mentioned. If it keeps you away from snacking sugary stuff or crisps then it's a good thing.

Good carbs keep you fuller for longer. Maybe people who want to crash diet cut carbs but it will all come back on in the long term, best to learn to healthy eat.

In fact, intermittent fasting improves the body's ability to burn fat for energy, rather than glycogen/muscle.

Fasting, done right, is lowering calorific intake to 1000ish calories, not lowering it to zero.

CodenameVillanelle · 21/07/2019 11:29

Low carb diets are fine. They are very good at keeping you satiated and avoiding snacking. But they aren't magic - they lead to calorie deficit just like any diet does.

IceIceCoffee · 21/07/2019 11:30

I don’t know why people come on mumsnet for nutrition advice the majority of what people say is batshit about diet

MouthFullofGum · 21/07/2019 11:30

For anyone suggesting you have to burn 3500 to lose 1lb of fat:

“The idea that weight loss or gain is simply due to an imbalance between “calories in” and “calories out” is old-school thinking. The so-called 3,500-calorie rule — that creating a calorie deficit of 500 calories a day will result in one pound of weight loss per week — was developed in 1958. Today, we know that the human body is too complex to fit a simple math equation. In fact, research shows that weight loss or gain varies from person to person, even with the same calorie deficit. It also varies over time.”

You need to find out how losing weight works.... A 1llb of weight for a salad 🙄

Nuttyaboutnutella · 21/07/2019 11:32

I love how OP has stated for only today, she's only eaten a salad and people are up in arms that's she's starving herself, one salad per day is not healthy, starvation mode 🤣

For all we know, OP had a McDonald's for breakfast, KFC for lunch and a massive Chinese takeaway for tea yesterday with 6 Mars bars, a whole chocolate cake and 6ltrs of full sugar coke thrown in for good measure.

OP, the one salad did not make you gain' 1lb. Weight fluctuations. Could've been a lot of salt in a dressing that's causes fluid retention, being due on, needing a shit, who knows.

kateandme · 21/07/2019 11:33

HopelessLayout not incorrect.if its done every so often then ok.but over time it is fact this happens it mess with the glucose release in the bod,how sugar is released and stored. and fucks with the metabolism.

TinyMystery · 21/07/2019 11:33

My weight varies between 59 and 63kg, so that’s what, over half a stone? I always find the ‘I’ve lost a lb’ brigade a bit laughable.

megletthesecond · 21/07/2019 11:35

The subway salad will have been pretty unhealthy but it hasn't put a pound on you.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 21/07/2019 11:37

I don’t know why people come on mumsnet for nutrition advice the majority of what people say is batshit about diet

I'm on a FB group about Weight loss and most people are following SW. One Person will write 'i went for a walk yesterday for the first time in months, I've gained 3lb, what have I done wrong?'

The amount of people who reply that she's probably just gained muscle is shocking and laughable. As if someone will gain 3lb of muscle in one walk Grin Hmm

PixieLumos · 21/07/2019 11:40

It 1lb OP. Just go to the toilet.

EssentialHummus · 21/07/2019 11:41

Not necessarily meg - I have a Subway sandwich (turkey breast) with salad and a light dressing weekly - 330 calories. Obviously if you go nuts with dressing, cheese, bacon, whatever else, it can be unhealthy, but I don’t think it’s inevitable.

BiBabbles · 21/07/2019 11:44

The body will down-regulate if on low calories for some time, causing us to want to move less and burn less calories at rest, but there is no strong evidence that it "fucks with the metabolism". In general, unless other medical condition like thyroid problems that is un- or undertreated or gone on long enough for nutritional deficiencies to happen, a few days at higher calories will bring things back to normal.

While the human body is complicated so we can't accurately state X calorie deficit will equal Y fat loss, calorie deficit is still the route to weight loss. Going too low will cause many problems alongside down-regulation - too low fats cause problems with hormone production, not enough protein effects recovery, not enough carbs causes issue with muscles and the brain & moods, and many other things if nutrient deficiencies happen, and too low is likely not to be sustainable long-term, but the body is smart enough in most situations to, even if we don't usually like it, to be able to deal with low-calorie time periods without being entirely fucked up. We evolved to cope with many thing without breaking, if going one day with only a salad was enough to cause problems, out ancestors and most people in the world would be really screwed.

Beautiful3 · 21/07/2019 11:47

Go for a quick run around the block each morning/night to kick start your metabolism. Swap breakfast and lunch for fruit and veg. Keep a sensible meal for dinner time. Only have one treat a day to keep at it without failing. I have mine after dinner. Replace all drinks with water.

HopelessLayout · 21/07/2019 11:47

kateandme Regular fasting improves the metabolism and the body's ability to use fat for fuel. It also improves insulin sensitivity.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/07/2019 11:56

Some things at subway are loaded with salt so you could easily be retaining water.

Rainbunny · 21/07/2019 12:00

This is why I don't weigh myself more than once every month or so. I'm trying to get fit and reduce my fat to muscle ratio right now and I'm doing training sessions x3 a week. My advice is to make measurements - hips, tummy and bust and see how they change on a weekly or monthly basis. I did this and even though I couldn't see any difference in my body shape when I looked in the mirror, measuring myself actually gave me the results that I lost an inch to an inch 1/2 after three weeks. If I'd have been weighing myself I'd have been obsessed over pounds lost/gained in that time and felt like I was failing. Weighing myself isn't helpful anyway as I'm trying to convert fat into muscle which weighs more.

amusedbush · 21/07/2019 12:00

As if someone will gain 3lb of muscle in one walk

It could be worse - a colleague once told me I shouldn't exercise at all because my fat would turn into muscle. TURN INTO. Like, change state Grin

alittleprivacy · 21/07/2019 12:01

But cutting carbs isn't a good move, it will make you hangry and it isn't necessarily going to lose you weight. I eat brown/basmati rice/sweet potatoes/normal baking potatoes every day on above diet I mentioned. If it keeps you away from snacking sugary stuff or crisps then it's a good thing.

To be fair, most people could stand to cut simple carbs as most people really aren't active enough to justify eating simple carbs 3, 4, 5 times a day. It's currently quite common to have cereal and or bread for breakfast. Bread/pasta for lunch. Potatoes/pasta/rice for dinner. And then maybe something bread based for supper. And maybe even cake/pastry/biscuits as a treat at some point in the day too. Switching it up to wholegrain bread/pasta really isn't that much healthier because if you are eating too much of something, you are eating too much.

Personally I have a policy of eating whatever whole fruit and veg, other than potatoes, I want and I pay zero attention to the amount of carbs and naturally occurring sugars. But even as a very active person, I limit my regular intake of bread/pasta/rice/potato/oat to one or two meals a day, with potato and oats being my preference, and favour protein to make me feel full.

AzraiL · 21/07/2019 12:01

It wouldn't have been the salad OP but it might have been what you ate the day before. Some foods take longer to digest than others. Eat your three to five small (healthy) meals a day, drink plenty of water, then stop eating at about 6pm and fast until the next morning. And don't neglect your healthy fats, you need those if you're going to lose anything. Throw in some physical activity 3- 5 times a week it'll come off. It doesn't have to be aerobics or the gym, you could just go for a nice long stroll at the shops or in a park. I'm quite large and lost 3.5kg my first week doing this.

Hotterthanahotthing · 21/07/2019 12:10

I had fish and chips last week and weighed the same the day after,I don't therefor think I can do this everyday thoughWeighing once a week is enough.,I'm on a diet and know that if I weigh myself tonight I will be heavier than this morning.

AzraiL · 21/07/2019 12:11

Yes, don't weigh yourself every day. The optimal time do to it is in the morning after you've released your bowels but before you've eaten.

BiBabbles · 21/07/2019 12:18

Regular fasting improves the metabolism and the body's ability to use fat for fuel. It also improves insulin sensitivity.

While restricted eating windows can help some people to stick to healthier diets, there is no strong evidence in humans that fasting has benefits beyond any other form of calorie restriction. In fact, in women, there is strong evidence that the down-regulation that comes from fasting has a greater effect on our ability to produce and use many hormones which is why it is generally recommended that the popular 16:8 intermitted fasting should be modified in women to non-consecutive days or a wider eating window.

There is no evidence of any permanent improving or fucking up metabolism (which isn't really one thing, different parts are affected differently) or permanent damage either unless one does it long enough that significant deficiencies happen (and most of those are reversible with the right care) which is why the alternating days can help prevent any issues from being in a down-regulated hormonal state. Our bodies adapt, but how they prioritize in that state is not always in our long-term best interest.

alittleprivacy · 21/07/2019 12:19

Yesterday late afternoon I weighed 52.4kg. This morning, after coffee and a poo, I weighed 53kg. An hour later after consuming nothing more and eliminating nothing more, I weighed 53.7kg. Weight is weird.
