So my daughter is 9 almost 10yrs old (Yr 5). From what I understand she is a strong reader for her age. (She is about level 6 on the accelerated reader programme.)

She is struggling to find authors she likes and can get into which are the right sort of level.

She has read lots of Jacqueline Wilson, Enid Blyton (malory towers, St clare etc), diary of a wimpy kid, Sibeal Pounder (- witch wars/bad mermaids).

She has recently rejected Enid Blyton famous five/secret seven, Cogheart, and Worst Witch.

School have suggested the Chronicals of Narnia but I'm not sure that's catching her either.

She doesn't like anything deamed "scary".

So does anyone have any suggestions as to what to try?

If she's that strong a reader, & she likes books about relationships, she could give Jane Austen a whirl. Also Agatha Christie. The Black series & other books by same author (boy & his horse relationship). Other excellent horsey books by Margarite Henry. The books by guy who wrote Charlottes Web are all suitable. Nancy Drew would be excellent (the peril element is pretty tame by modern standards).

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit - I haven't read it, but have a feeling it would suit.
Jane Blonde books are good.
Dork Diaries for light relief; less heavy than J-Wilson.

And Calvin & Hobbes!

Jane Austen ? Would a ten year old read that? I could have read it at ten but would have thought it was the most boring book ever.

Craftylittlething · 21/07/2019 10:51

Roald Dahl, David Williams, wonder is a great book, the lemony snicket series, mr gum books are brilliant, I’d also ask in your local book shop, our place the staff are brilliant with recommendations

PestoCaffeinisto · 21/07/2019 10:52

Arthur Ransome’s Swallows & Amazons series.

PestoCaffeinisto · 21/07/2019 10:55

Carbonel - by Barbara Sleigh
Think there’s 3 in this series, I loved them at her age.

PurpleFlower1983 · 21/07/2019 10:55

She might like the Alex Ryder novels.

Missillusioned · 21/07/2019 10:57

I enjoyed the James Herriot books as a child. My 10 year old is a good reader and us currently enjoying the Lemony Snicket series. I assume she has read Harry Potter?

MountPheasant · 21/07/2019 10:57

When I was her age I loved the Babysitters Club, its American but I adored it and there’s hundreds of books to go through.

If she has a kindle the first four books collection is here

Babysitter's Club Collection (Books 1-4) (Baby-Sitters Club)

Judy Blume? Some of it might be too ‘teenage’ for her but there are others “Tales of a Fourth grade nothing” and “superfudge” etc which were my absolute faves at that age.

Vibiano · 21/07/2019 11:01

White Fang and The Call of the Wild.
Both by Jack London I think. Brilliant books about wolves and dogs. My dad bought them for me at that age and I wasn't keen but I adored them.

Beechview · 21/07/2019 11:06

Even if she’s a strong reader, she would probably enjoy books aimed at her age for content.
I’ve found this site quite useful

My DD is 8 but a prolific reader.

Michael Morpurgo. He’s written about all kinds of themes so don’t dismiss him if the first few you take a look at don’t appeal. I love his writing style.

David Walliams for lighthearted, funny tales.

Erin Hunter - Warrior Cats series.

Presumably she’s read the Harry Potter series? What about Percy Jackson?

Emma Carroll - Frost Hollow Hall and The Girl who Walked on Air were hits.

Anna James - Pages & Co

Kate Saunders - The Whizz Pop Chocolate Shop.

The Marsh Road Mysteries series by Ellen Caldecott.

Any Michael Rosen.

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase?

FossiPajuZeka · 21/07/2019 11:09

My 10yo loves Rick Riorden but I don't know how you're defining "scary" - there is certainly dramatic tension and peril. Ditto the Chrestomancy books by Diana Wynne Jones. The Tiffany Aching books of Terry Pratchett (starting with the Wee Free Men) has only relatively mild peril and tension but I'm struggling to think of books with a decent interesting plot but without any peril.

BikeRunSki · 21/07/2019 11:10

Artemis Fowl? DS has just finished Y5, and loves these. He will read them every spare minute, to the detriment of playing the Ps4!

Missillusioned · 21/07/2019 11:10

There are some Terry Pratchett books aimed at younger readers too. My 10 yr old enjoyed them

daisypond · 21/07/2019 11:11

Northern Lights trilogy.

TheBrockmans · 21/07/2019 11:13

Jules Verne? Tolkien- although some fight scenes and deaths not particularly scary.

GruciusMalfoy · 21/07/2019 11:13

My son loves Michael Morpurgo books, he's read and enjoyed the Harry Potter series. He's reading The Hobbit just now and is enjoying it, there are a lot of tense parts in it, but I don't think it would be too scary.

PeriComoToes · 21/07/2019 11:15

Agatha Oddly books (girl detective books)

MrsArabin · 21/07/2019 11:21

The Ship From Simnel Street; Creed Country and The Nightwatch Winter all by Jenny Overton are all really good but probably out of print now. Hopefully a library would have them.

She also wrote The Thirteen Days of Christmas which you must only read in December, of course! Wink

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 21/07/2019 11:22

My dd is 10. She likes Katherine Rundell, juliette forest, Pullman, abi elphinstone, Eva ibbotsen, Karen Millwood Hargrave, the Harry potter books, the little house on the prairie books, Michelle magorian, classics like secret garden, Anne of green gables, Jessica Townsend, erm... she liked the boy at the back of the class, the girl who drank the moon, tilly and the book wanderers, the girl who circumnavigated fairy land.. loads! See what's coming up in your local Waterstones kids club.

Isitme13 · 21/07/2019 11:24

The Lauren St John books? My dd enjoyed them at that age.

Tilly and the book wanderers is also good.

I can’t remember who wrote it, but she liked a book called The Other Alice when she was in year 5.

The Roman mystery series?

Owlypants · 21/07/2019 11:33

Terry pratchett does books aimed at younger readers. They are a bit different but enjoyable and not scary

SnottyLittleMango · 21/07/2019 11:36

The Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett are great - the first is called The Wee Free Men I think?
