So my daughter is 9 almost 10yrs old (Yr 5). From what I understand she is a strong reader for her age. (She is about level 6 on the accelerated reader programme.)

She is struggling to find authors she likes and can get into which are the right sort of level.

She has read lots of Jacqueline Wilson, Enid Blyton (malory towers, St clare etc), diary of a wimpy kid, Sibeal Pounder (- witch wars/bad mermaids).

She has recently rejected Enid Blyton famous five/secret seven, Cogheart, and Worst Witch.

School have suggested the Chronicals of Narnia but I'm not sure that's catching her either.

She doesn't like anything deamed "scary".

So does anyone have any suggestions as to what to try?

Series of unfortunate events series. Percy Jackson series. Both none adult themes but good reading.

The "Murder most unladylike" series? Also the Terry pratchett Tiffany Aching series (starts with the Wee Free Men).

Ones I read at a similar age are;

James Herriot books, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Heidi, little women, black beauty. I know I started on books like pride and prejudice at about that age maybe a year or 2 older (I read it and watched the bbc adaptation at the same time to help me out) the Stravaganza series was awesome as well.

Also loved the hobbit, Harry Potter and read damn near all of Agatha Christie's work before I was 12 and then went onto Sherlock Holmes which was much harder going for a kid and I somehow managed to miss all reference to him doing drugs, I understood what an opium den was but didn't get that he was ever there for anything other than his investigations...

Mrs Perigrins children, think there's 3 or 4 in a series.

Some may be a bit young or have scary parts but they’re generally what my 10 year does/has enjoyed and she’s a wimp Grin

Anything by Holly Webb! The Lily series, the Rose series, any of her Animal Magic books...

Cathy Cassidy's Chocolate Box girls are also good although there is the odd "boyfriend" theme in a couple of them, but nothing over the top.

Lois Lowry's 'Anastasia' books
'The Runaways' by Ruth Thomas
Ian Serralier's 'The Silver Sword'

NanFlanders · 22/07/2019 16:56

My 11 yo ds's favourites are the percy jackson series' and the skulduggery pleasant series

itsstillgood · 22/07/2019 16:58

Anne of Green Gables, and anything by LM Montgomery.
Rosemary Sutcliffe is fantastic. My son liked Katherine Roberts at that age. Willard Price is another good one.
Swallows and Amazons, Wind in the Willows, the Borrowers, Animals of Farthing Wood. My son liked the Roman Mysteries but I suspect that they might not suit (although from memory only the opening chapter is scary).

Charlieandthechocolatecake · 22/07/2019 21:20

Isabelle Allende - City of the Beasts

My daughter is just 9 and a good reader. She has recently enjoyed:

Percy Jackson
Pegasus series
Henderson Boys (but not Cherub ... would appear quite inappropriate!)
Anne if GG (am about to start reading with mine, she loves being read to)
Railway Children

Hasn’t got far with Narnia
Absolutely would not let her read Austen or Jane Eyre... I reckon it would ruin it for her when she is older...there’s no rush.

pinksquash13 · 22/07/2019 21:57

Alice in wonderland and Alice through the looking glass. Secret Garden. Black Beauty. How to train your dragon series. Charlotte's web. Malorie Blackman (may be a little bit much for her). Wind in the willows. Stories by Hans Christian Anderson. Lots of classics have new illustrations and covers which I find really makes a difference.

AbsinthedelaBonchance · 22/07/2019 22:36

Another vote for Diana Wynne-Jones ( have loved her books for more than 40 years) and Rick Riordan
I'd like to recommend Richard Roberts - Please Don't Tell My Parents I'm a Supervillain - series in particular but his new one "A Rag Doll's Guide to Here and There" is brilliant. Has anyone said Jiggy McCue yet btw? When my daughter was that age I used to wait for the next one more eagerly than she did - ridiculously funny & quite normal kids...Yes I still read children's books...and adult books - I just like books - except misery memoirs and pretentious arty crap

sodonesooverit · 23/07/2019 06:43

The Jinny series by Patricia Leitch. They are wholly wonderful
