I have booked a girly holiday with my daughter next month to Hurghada! The reason I picked this destination as it was affordable and has a huge water park which she we love.....I saw last night that British airways have cancelled flights to Cairo and i am now panicking about going! Am I just being a worry head? Sods law I only booked it on Thursday.........

I'm in the same boat, as we have booked to go in september and my husband is on about us changing holidays, so guess what I was doing yesterday? (of course I cant find the same amount of nights with a swim up pool room for same price). Then got to take into consideration how much it would cost to change the whole booking.
You could say I'm a bit selfish as i said the same as other people you could go to town somewhere and terrorist could be there, and nothing has happened specifically at hurghada

Anniegouna · 22/07/2019 12:47

If you get a stomach bug, buy the local stuff “Antinal” don’t take Imodium. Agree don’t drink really cold drinks in the hot weather as that is the main cause for upset stomachs and having a/c on really cold is not good either.

Ems1312 · 22/07/2019 13:55

I fly to Hurgarda next Friday with two young boys , I'm not worried in the slightest. The FCO haven't said it's unsafe to travel and it's only BA that have cancelled flights . Go and enjoy your holiday and I know I am 🥰

Pippiquick1 · 22/07/2019 15:31

I have been twice to Hurghada .. first time royal sunrise crystal bay just my hubby and my self march 2018 and then this march to the royal markardi just outside Hurghada with the children we also went on tours dolphin house and to marmaha island snorkelling ... also children went on the desert safari all in all brilliant holiday yes there is guards on all the entrances for the hotels and on the roadside between Hurghada and Luxor we had bo issues with any disturbances at all the people are so friendly in the shops and in the complex ...if you are worried about security i wouldnt be ! If you dont want to leave the hotel complex then there is no need to as wverything is there for you ..

Racmactac · 22/07/2019 15:36

I went to hurgharda year and didn't feel at risk from a security point of view but I certainly would never return.

As a single mum with 2 ds I felt violated every time I went out the hotel. I will never visit a Muslim country on my own again.

SagAloojah · 22/07/2019 16:15

@Racmatac you are very ignorant to judge all Muslim countries based on one holiday.

Egypt does have a sexual harassment problem but it’s the Egyptian women who have to deal with it 99% of the time. It’s nothing to do with Islam.

But we, Egypt needs to educate its men that sexual harassment is never acceptable.

DullPortraits · 22/07/2019 16:26

The main reason people get D and V in Egypt resorts is lack of hygiene and food poisoning NOT because they had ice in their bloody drinks or had their air con on too cold after a day in the sun! Don't be so ridiculous Everyone i know who has got ill out there followed every single precaution they advise in preventing getting sick and guess what?? Yep still puking for days and shitting through the eye of a needle.

Sinn · 22/07/2019 16:29

It's buttons to go there at the moment for obvious reasons.

I hated Sharm and wouldn't have gone back even if you could, but would go to hurghada although probably not at the moment.

DH is refusing to go to Morocco and I won't go to Tunisia so we are probably missing out due to being pussies.

Have a lovely holiday OP

IndieTara · 22/07/2019 16:50

My DD was due to fly to Cairo Saturday with Lufthansa who also cancelled.
She finally got there 24 hrs later
( she's with Egyptian dad )
Hurghada is not Cairo, just go

Garageflower172 · 22/07/2019 17:39

Always astonished that people don't research holiday destinations properly. Having worked in the travel industry, I've dealt with people who for example, travelled to Sri Lanka at the height of the unrest - expecting to be pandered to by staff who live there and are dealing with this shit. Same in Indonesia - people travelling to Bali during the East Timor crisis, expecting to be treated like Western Royalty. So. If your holiday is cheap- ask yourself why. Research what is going on, and by all means go (if FCO advice is that you can), but go with your eyes open - have some degree of empathy with the people who work in these resorts. Talk to them about what it is like for them and their families to live there, ask how you can help.

Fairyhill · 22/07/2019 18:10

My friends are there at the moment having a great time they ve travelled all
Over skipping Cairo - they actually just arrive in Hurgharda and having a great time. They were in Karnak and Luxor just days ago.. these places are miles and miles from Cairo. Egypt is a wonderful place with brilliant people.
I went 10 years ago and there were armed guards on each hotel on each street corner.
And it’s was still very relaxed.
They see it as preventive .

Go have a great time.
I m late to the party on this so you ve probably already gone by now or cancelled
Send me your tickets I ll go in your place lol xx

naturallyred · 22/07/2019 18:12

Hi! My family of four went to Hurghada last year, had a wonderful time. My husband was worried about going but I persuaded him. My children (13 & 12) said it was the best holiday they have ever been on. I regret not going again this year but wanted to experience another country. Take your snorkelling gear it’s expensive to buy out there and the sea life is the jewel in the crown. Have fun!

Fairyhill · 22/07/2019 18:16

P.s I found everyone very polite- no one touched me or harassed me.
But I was very clear with people trying to sell me things or get too close.
I went horse back riding with my guide just me and them. No problem at all.
Some of the old fellas asked for a hug.. I simply said la la .
No no.
That’s that.
But others felt pressured into getting into taxis rather than walking as they did nt want to offend anyone trying to earn a Bob or two
I walked everyone and by the end of the holiday they shouted - it’s she who walks like an Egyptian.

So go into it with your eyes open. Expect to pay tips and lots of them, these people are poor.
Be kind - be clear - be firm but never rude.
But if you ever feel ( like in this country ) the situation is nt right.. shout blue bloody murder! They ll run like the wind! 🤣

SweetMarmalade · 22/07/2019 18:18

We went to Hurghada a few years ago. Had a great time.

I was a little apprehensive but the resort was lovely and even though we went during August, we survived. Air con was everywhere, pools to cool you down, loved it.

If I remember rightly, there was some issue with getting your visa at the airport. There’s basically two queues (or there was when we went, perhaps it’s changed since then) the ‘proper’ queue where you pay the correct amount and the other queue where you get beckoned over to the minute you walk through the doors. We stuck with the ‘proper’ queue despite being called over to the other one. You basically pay more if you don’t stick to your guns. This was the case when we went so this might have all changed.

We also went to Sharm, a month before the Russian plane was brought down. I didn’t feel as secure in that airport but did like the resort and the beach was beautiful.

Dp would return to Hurghada tomorrow and Sharm (if you could fly direct) but I’ve been now and would prefer to explore other parts of the world.

Despite the August heat, we managed fine. Don’t have the air con on too high, drink bottled water keep a t shirt, rash vest on your dc, take jungle formulae repellent for the mossies, plus a mossie plug in your room. Take an extension cable Grin We tipped the pool attendant every day so that he’d put towels on our chosen beds (despite a sign saying that you couldn’t save beds, but everyone tipped the pool guy).

You’ll enjoy it I’m sure.

(and muppet)

chocolatebumby · 22/07/2019 18:24

@Aridane
Grin

Fowles94 · 22/07/2019 18:27

These places normally are very safe on the resorts, try not to worry and enjoy yourself.

MmeBoulaye · 22/07/2019 18:27

Are you flying direct to Hurghada? You should go, relax and enjoy. BA suspended flights specific to them and Cairo as a precaution due to intelligence. Anywhere in the world has its threats these days and we should not be defeated by terrorism.

puppy23 · 22/07/2019 18:29

You get a lot more for your money in Egypt.

This years holiday is costing us £3500. 3 adult places, 4 star AI. For that we get a hotel directly on the beach, in a village type area, with a Waterpark, 2 buffet restaurants, 6 a la carte (included in the price) and a payable spa, dive centre and watersports. We have a large room with a separate area for DD. That is pretty standard for Hurghada.

You won't get that in Europe.

I've just booked a 5* AI in Turkey with all that for £830 for two adults so that's not entirely true.

DullPortraits · 22/07/2019 18:40

Yep @puppy23 there is a reason for that too!! Confused

MollyMinniesMum · 22/07/2019 18:41

I wouldn’t want to go either, claim on your travel insurance

Vodkasquirts · 22/07/2019 18:45

I've just come home from a silo trip to Tunisia and was absolutely fine.
Lots of Armed guards and checkpoints in various parts of Town

And I've just booked Sinbad club for xmas with 19 yr old son with TUI

You will be fine join the facebook group for Hurghada for lots of advice and tips your Hotel might also have it's own group on FB.
I've recently joined the Sinbad 1.

Ba cancelled from what I gather due to rioting football fans and flights are expected to return to normal soon I think

Do organised trips honestly tons of advice on the groups

IndieTara · 22/07/2019 18:46

@DullPortraits and have you seen how dirty the money is?
I lived there for 3 years, in an apartment, cooked my own food.
Still got D&V every 3 months or so

IndieTara · 22/07/2019 18:48

@Vodkasquirts yep I was told due to football fans too. Egypt was hosting the Cup of Nations

Anniegouna · 22/07/2019 18:54

Sweetmarmalade, thankfully the have removed the kiosks and now just the bank for visas, think so many people complained. Have a great time, I have another seven weeks to wait.
