And all those saying how dreadful it must be to face all that security, I work in London and we have Hurghada style security- well, a bit more in your face- ie vehicles searched before access to the delivery area , sniffer dogs, scanners
for visitors

Mazbain87 · 21/07/2019 17:49

Please do not be worried about going to Egypt. Bristish Airways was the only flight operator to suspends flights for 7 days. The foreign office actually state its safe to travel if its in the green they are not advising against travel and all of Cairo and the South of Egypt is absolutely fine. Hurghada is beautiful I've just come back on Wednesday after spending 3 weeks out there. I've been 4 times since December last year and going again in November. I love the place the people are amazing and friendly. It's not at all dangerous it's no dangerous than living in the UK. People seem to forget we live in a country where there are stabbings. Terrorism and dangers all around us but does that make us want to leave the UK. Hurghada itself has not had a terrorist attack in its 25 years of existence, says alot for if Hurghada or the uk is safer. Don't be afraid to go. It's beautiful and you will enjoy it.

fraxion · 21/07/2019 18:16

Where did BA confirm it was due to threat to aviation? I've only seen that they refused to fully comment as they don't comment on their security concerns. That's it. What have I missed?

From the FCO travel advice - "There’s a heightened risk of terrorism against aviation. Additional security measures are in place for flights departing from Egypt to the UK. You should co-operate fully with security officials at airports." The flights were cancelled over security concerns.

BA spokesman statement to the BBC - "A BA spokesman said: "We constantly review our security arrangements at all our airports around the world, and have suspended flights to Cairo for seven days as a precaution to allow for further assessment.

"The safety and security of our customers and crew is always our priority, and we would never operate an aircraft unless it was safe to do so."'

@NoSauce Well in context of the OP it is definetly safe. In an overall summary then no, because truthfully, no where is safe - anything can happen, anywhere, any time.

PineappleSeahorse · 21/07/2019 18:27

Hurghada itself has not had a terrorist attack in its 25 years of existence, says alot for if Hurghada or the uk is safer.

I know that Hurghada hasn't had a terrorist attack on the scale of say Paris and Manchester but they have had terrorist attacks even if 'just' by one or two individuals.

I have been to hurghada many times, makati bay, Tara and sharm. Only went to sharm once as I don’t like it and prefer makati or hurghada.
Hurghada airport is a millatry airport so probably the safest in Egypt.
Security at the hotels is very tight so you will be fine in both.

There has been attacks against the hotels in hurghada but nothing for a few years now.
And who ever said hurghada is a man mid holiday resort is wrong as hurghada originally was a fishing village and the old town still has the fish markets.

chocolatebumby · 21/07/2019 18:55

Just so everyone is aware.

The reason you don't drink ice there is because there is a risk that it has been made by tap water.

Not because it is a 'shock to the system' in hot weather as a PP wrote.

Not drinking the ice in the day and then drinking it in the evening makes you a wally.

exLtEveDallas · 21/07/2019 20:32

Not drinking the ice in the day and then drinking it in the evening makes you a wally

And using a word like 'wally' makes you look about 6.

Believe what you want sweetie, I'll take advice from the people that actually live with 40 and 50 degree heat regularly. This news report during a heatwave has the same advise from a physician www.wmdt.com/2018/07/ice-cold-water-on-a-hot-day-can-be-harmful/

Clare7577 · 21/07/2019 20:35

I cancelled our holiday to hurghada not because of the terror threats,as that hadn't happened, but because i looked on trip advisor and saw people were dropping like flies from food poisoning,e coli etc, suffering organ failures, also sexual adults on women in resort, and harassment from salesman who are let into your resorts.also british couple died last year from carbon monoxide poisoning in room of hotel

Clare7577 · 21/07/2019 20:43

Sorry that should say sexual assaults

SolitudeAtAltitude · 21/07/2019 21:04

ExltdEveDallas, just because, indeed, drinking iced drinks in the heat is bad for you, does not mean it isn't ALSO risky when made with tap water, for bacterial reasons

exLtEveDallas · 21/07/2019 21:15

I've never said it wasn't? Of course it is, that's obvious.

I said that I also avoided ice made with bottled water during the day. At no point have I said I used ice made with tap water, because I don't, no one in their right mind would!

Anniegouna · 21/07/2019 21:47

I lived in el gouna near Hurghada for nine months of the year and have been for many years, I have never seen any problems. Cairo is a six hour drive south of Cairo. Go and enjoy your holiday, it is very hot, hence the reason for being in the uk at the moment. You will have a great time. There is no train from Cairo to Hurghada.

Differentcorner · 21/07/2019 22:00

If you’ve never been to egypt before then it will be a bit of a shock when you land. Hurghada relies on tourism but outside of the hotel many people are living in real poverty. Personally I think it’s up to you and how you feel. I wouldn’t take my children there but I am a very anxious person. Do not brush your teeth with tap water or have ice cubes in drinks, always wash hands after handling money

Anniegouna · 21/07/2019 22:02

They are tourist police and are there to look after foreigners safety first. I live in el gouna just north of Hurghada, I can honestly say I feel safer in Egypt than I do in the uk. Go and have a great time, it will be very hot, drink plenty of bottled water, save the alcohol for the evenings, plenty of high factor sunscreen. Cairo is a six hour drive from Hurghada.
The alleged attacks in Hurghada was actually two drunk hotel workers, they were sacked and went back to get there owed money, but tourist police and security arrested them, sadly once the truth came out it was never reported, normal uk reporters, it makes me angry. I have been to Cairo quite a few times, yes there are certain parts I wouldn’t go to. Have a great time.

Shelly1976x · 21/07/2019 23:03

Iv lived in hurghada 5 years go and enjoy your holiday and if you need and help or advice on anything while your in hurghada just message me il put u on right path hun
From a yorkshire lass xx

chocolatebumby · 22/07/2019 06:16

@exLtEveDallas

I'll take appearing age 6 for using the word 'wally' over and above avoiding iced drinks during the day in warm weather as it 'might shock the body' any time!

I did purposefully avoid using any word other than wally to try and avoid offence but it appears some cannot help but take it.

It's an opinion on ice, don't take it to heart.

exLtEveDallas · 22/07/2019 08:26

Nah, wally is the sort of word you use when you are talking to a child, not a grown adult on an adults SM site. You can disagree all you like, I couldn't give a fuck, but don't talk to me like a kid, especially when you don't know what you are talking about.

Drinking ice cold drinks in 40+ degree heat is a bad idea. Just like drinking ice cold drinks directly after exercise. If your core temp is raised, you are better drinking tepid, cool or even warm drinks.

Leaving your bottled water a few minutes to warm up is better for you than drinking something directly from the chiller or with added ice.

Wally

darrenwhite · 22/07/2019 08:59

na you really have nothing to worry about seriously, we went to hurghada forgive the spelling, and in thought the same as you to begin with but got there and the security is probely better than what it is over here , we even went on quad bikes out of the resort in the desert and again security and controlled areas is just great . even went on a boat to swim with dolphins and that was out of the marina , personally we didnt walk around we stuck the the arranged transport provided by the excursion company .it really is a safe holiday cleaner than I thought it would be aswell , go enjoy it . it's really is alright

chocolatebumby · 22/07/2019 09:02

Sorry @exLtEveDallas
Posted too soon

Wally really was meant as a term of mucking about endearment. I'm sorry if it has causes you offence. It wasn't meant to. I take most of what I read on Mumsnet with a pinch of salt, it's not to be taken seriously.

I don't agree with you about the ice but am sure you have your reasons.

SerenaOverjoyed · 22/07/2019 09:52

I've heard that it's not advised to drink iced drinks during the heat of the day when it's very hot (35+) as it can upset the stomach. It's apparently a common misconception in Egypt that people do this, upset their stomachs, then believe they have caught a stomach bug. I remember ice being available in our resort's lobby bar but not in self service areas on the beach.

That being said, you can get a very nasty gastro bug in Egypt. It's just unlikely in a resort if you take sensible precautions.

Sorry if this has already been linked but check out the gov foreign travel advice.

GrapefruitGin · 22/07/2019 10:24

Not sure how accurate this is but I’ve seen cabin crew use gloves when handling Egyptian currency as apparently it’s very dirty. If you’re a bit funny with germs maybe carry some hand sanitiser!
