Aibu to think this is Lyme disease?
On 3 year old sons calf.
We are in an area of high ticks and dog walk in areas there are ticks.
Noticed a raised lump like a bite 4 days ago but didn’t spot an actual tick.
Now this has appeared.
Phoned 111 at 10am this morning and they said he needs to see someone, but they’ve not called back.
Sorry can’t remember if it’s Tic or Tick 🤷‍♀️

This one also mentions size. 5cm-30cm ring.
Hoping that means we are safe!

I had a small bite similar to your son’s . It developed into lymes in that I started to feel really unwell about a month 6 weeks after the bite . Please do seek advice about the bite. I never saw a tick and the mark wasn’t a typical bullseye one either. Took several treatments of antibiotics to sort it and I wasn’t feeling better for at least a year if not longer.

Purpletigers · 20/07/2019 19:02

I’m not sure size of the only indicator . I’d get it checked out if I were you , especially as he’s so young and won’t have the language to explain his symptoms.

Purpletigers · 20/07/2019 19:02

*is

Tartsamazeballs · 20/07/2019 19:06

Not all lymes cases have the bullseye ring anyway. I'd call 111 and if no joy go to A&E. You don't want to fuck about if it is Lymes, it nearly destroyed my friend's life Sad

ohdearwhatcouldtheproblembe · 20/07/2019 19:18

I will definitely get it checked when 111 call back.
But I’m thinking the likelihood is small.
I didn’t see a tick at any time.
The rash isn’t typical looking or size.
It’s not growing.
So I’m trying to be optimistic!

I dont think it looks like a typical lyme disease bullseye rash (and not all lyme disease bites cause a rash) but see what 111 say.
Tbh 3 weeks of antibiotics is no fun but it's better than lyme disease which made my daughter very ill including cardiac issues

JeSuisPrest · 20/07/2019 20:43

BF had the rash after tick removed (and he was wearing long trousers when he got bit). Drew a ring around it in biro, kept and eye on it but it kept getting bigger so he took a trip to the GP who prescribed antibiotics with no blood test 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oldmotherhubbardlivesinashoe · 20/07/2019 20:49

Obviously you should get it looked at but it looks like ringworm to me.

Twotinydictators · 20/07/2019 20:50

DS3 recently had an infected gnat bite, looked like he just reacted badly for a while but on 8th day woke up and it didn't look right at all. Went to walk in centre and he had 7 days of antibiotics.

Looks like normal reaction to midge bite from ssomeone very allergic to the foreign saliva/DNA. My kids and mine look just like that.

ohdearwhatcouldtheproblembe · 20/07/2019 20:55

It was his first ever bite. Not sure from what insect! So I’ve obviously never seen how he reacts to a gnat bite so hopefully just that.

OP posts:
Tingface · 20/07/2019 21:00

That’s not a bullseye rash.
I reckon that’s just a reaction to a normal bite. Keep an eye on it though in case it gets infected.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 20/07/2019 21:04

My son had these on his back and the doc decided it might be lymes and to give him 21 days on amoxicillin just in case.
I'd get it checked if I were you OP, lymes can be nasty if left - much better treated early!

Wenttoseainasieve · 20/07/2019 21:23

This is how my DD reacts to mosquito bites, so I don't think your DS has necessarily been bitten by a tick, but you should get it checked.

Starksforthewin · 20/07/2019 21:45

Is there anything that can be done about the growing prevalence of ticks? Should the government be carpet bombing land with stuff that can kill them off?
I'm exaggerating obviously for effect but every article I read talks about the spread across the nation . If the alternative is people having to take three weeks of antibiotics surely there should be an alternative plan?

BeckyWithTheSplitEnds · 20/07/2019 22:15

We could go back to dipping sheep properly... it was stopped in the late 80s/early 90s because of the risk of carcinogens to the farmers... there are rumbles in rural communities that there's a direct correlation. The dip was keeping the situation under control.

BadBadBeans · 20/07/2019 22:19

Oh my goodness, I cannot believe the people saying it looks normal. Red circular rash around a tick bite site needs treating. Get him to an out of hours GP tomorrow for a prescription. My husband works outdoors and we are very tick aware. In fact I just finished a tick check five minutes ago! My son had a tick bite a couple of weeks ago and had he come up with a rash like this I would have been straight to the doctor. Combined with the flu symptoms you really must, must, must get him treated. Please!

BadBadBeans · 20/07/2019 22:21

Oops I misread - didn't realise you hadn't seen a tick on him. Glad you rang 111 x

Lindellia · 20/07/2019 22:21

I'm a dermatologist and my husband is a GP - we both agree that that rash could potentially be indicative of Lyme disease. I would go to your GP.

Regarding why doctors tend to put patients on antibiotics straight away, it's quite difficult to test for Lyme disease - a negative result doesn't necessarily mean you don't have it. In addition, outcomes are best if antibiotics are started straight away so delaying while waiting for certainty is not a good idea.

ohdearwhatcouldtheproblembe · 22/07/2019 19:45

So it wasn’t lymes disease. Just in case anyone was wondering!
The ring has almost disappeared too!
Just a reaction to an insect bite!

Thanks for updating, glad all well.

HeadintheiClouds · 22/07/2019 20:45

Oh, that’s great

SusieOwl4 · 22/07/2019 21:08

as far as I know there is not a definitive test for lymei in the uk - go to dr and if they think it is a tick bite they should give antibiotics anyway . the disease may or may not be present and it might not appear straight away . Just get it checked .

SusieOwl4 · 22/07/2019 21:09

sorry crossed post
