Getting to end of primary and some parents are moving their DC into private schools. One mum mentioned to me 'he is a banker'- AIBU to think it is a bit unreasonable to tell your child this / assume he will be this just because his dad is? I feel a bit sorry for the boy.

Sorry, I'm not understanding. The DM told you that her DH is a banker?

And from this you have decided that they think their own DC should become one too?

formerbabe · 20/07/2019 10:16

Your post is a bit confusing.

MarthasGinYard · 20/07/2019 10:17

I'm imagining that most primary school dc know what their Parents do as a career Confused

TheStoic · 20/07/2019 10:17

She said ‘he is a banker’? Not ‘he’s going to be a banker’?

I don’t understand.

Ohyesiam · 20/07/2019 10:18

Huh?

dementedpixie · 20/07/2019 10:18

I thought it was rhyming slang for 'wanker' Grin

user87382294757 · 20/07/2019 10:18

No, the mum neat her son will be a banker, like is dad. Therefore the private school (I assume, as she said it after telling me about the move).

WhiteDust · 20/07/2019 10:18

They are sending their DS to private school because 'he's a banker'?

No he's not, he's an 11 year old boy.

YANBU to think WTF!

user87382294757 · 20/07/2019 10:18

meant, excuse typos.

OP posts:
AvengerDanvers95 · 20/07/2019 10:18

I presume you mean 'banker' as in 'dead cert'? Yanbu.

Fabellini · 20/07/2019 10:20

I think the OP is saying that the parent of the child is referencing the child. “He is a banker”, meaning “he needs to go to the private school otherwise he won’t get a good career.”
The obvious answer is “no he’s not, he’s a child.”

user87382294757 · 20/07/2019 10:21

Yes, I thought 'he is a child' - I didn't quite know what to say to be honest.

I think YABU

To Assume quite a bit here Op

LynetteScavo · 20/07/2019 10:22

Well, I think DC to achieve what their parents expect of them, so if she really wants him to be a banker she better keep saying it! Grin

Let's just hope he enjoys being a banker and doesn't decide he'd rather be an artist or actor or something. Hmm

PooWillyBumBum · 20/07/2019 10:25

Could she mean a banker as in a certain bet? As in, if they invest in him he'll come good?

Otherwise it doesn't make any sense.

DoneLikeAKipper · 20/07/2019 10:26

Are you sure you didn’t mishear? Maybe she said ‘he’s a bit of a wanker so I’m sending him to private school. His dad is a wanker too’.

MarthasGinYard · 20/07/2019 10:27

Are you sure she didn't say 'my DH is a real Merchant Banker' Grin

Decormad38 · 20/07/2019 10:28

I'm with op I think the DM probably did mean that he needs to go to Private school to achieve his destiny ( of being a wanker, sorry banker).

EssentialHummus · 20/07/2019 10:30

I can't imagine this conversation however hard I try. "Where is little Johnny off to next year?" "Community Secondary. What about little Jack?" "Oh, he's going to Harrow, because he is a banker." ???

WhiteDust · 20/07/2019 10:33

It's a weird thing to say OP! To say that an 11 year old is going to private school because they are (going to be) a banker is ridiculous.

Hidingwhoiam · 20/07/2019 10:35

That converstation and your conclusion of it makes no sense.

tomboytown · 20/07/2019 10:36

Don’t really understand
You don’t need to go to a private school to be a banker
But if she thinks her ds has to be a banker because his father is, that’s unreasonable.
But the child might be obsessed with numbers/maths so that’s her little joke?
Maybe he wants to be a banker
It’s probably just a throw away comment, just idle chatter, I wouldn’t have given it too much thought!

CatInADoghouse · 20/07/2019 10:40

I'm really confused...I don't understand...the child's DM told you that the boy is going to a private school so be can become a banker?
It's a bit of an odd thing to say but some parents are just weird like that. They have all of these aspirations for their DC and try to live vicariously through them. I think I wouldn't have taken any notice to be fair. Just smile and nod.

Pipandmum · 20/07/2019 10:45

I would have asked her what she meant. I don’t get it at all. If she literally meant banker he certainly doesn’t need to go to a private school. If she said ‘future PM’ then maybe... but a tad ambitious!

Isatis · 20/07/2019 10:52

I do hope the kid in question ends up doing virtually anything but banking.
