Upcoming holiday bad reviews

I'm due to go on holiday at the start of August with Dh, Dd 13 and Dd 10. We booked a package holiday deal to Palmaniva, Majorca in August last year, reviews were all good but today i've just looked on trip advisor to lots of reviews, slating it. They say its not family friendly, full of groups of young adults who are noisy and take over the pool etc.
My AIBU is that Dh wants to cancel as he thinks we'll have a rubbish time, i still want to go as we are only 200m from the beach so we can go there daily instead of the pool, its self catering so we can eat out every night and it's s only a week so I'm sure we can manage some broken sleep.

People, generally, like to complain over any petty little thing. So poor reviews often outnumber positive reviews.

I agree with you - young people will not want to be paying inflated August prices and are unlikelyy to be in theresort at the same time you are.

ladylunchalot · 18/07/2019 09:58

Would you be able to change the accommodation? Some hotels in Palma Nova are lovely and the beach there is stunning. We've been there loads of times and some hotels are much better than others. What's the name of it?

HairyFloppins · 18/07/2019 10:01

The groups do tend to die down a bit in August but it would have me worried as well.

I like my sleep on holiday.

lurker101 · 18/07/2019 10:03

If the reviews were good when you booked at the same time of year as you will travel, it’s likely that there were more families around due to school holidays, whereas the recent reviews would be from May-ish travellers to now, who would have been mainly those without families owing to late starting English school holidays. I wouldn’t worry too much as you’re unlikely to have stag/hen dos etc in Majorca in August but there are loads may/June due to cheap deals

Angech74 · 18/07/2019 10:06

As my former MIL always said, a holiday is what you make it. Yes, there may be some bloody awful people there now, but they're more likely to have left by the time you get there. I would go with your suggestion - use the apartment as a base, but get out there and do stuff elsewhere during the day.

Groovee · 18/07/2019 10:10

I found that the reviews were dreadful of the hotel we had booked in the weeks leading up to our holiday. The night before we left positive reviews appeared. It was the best holiday we had ever done.

DogbertDogglesworth · 18/07/2019 10:10

I generally take the good and the bad reviews, lump them together and come out with an average.
Some people complain over silly things, some people complain about things that are outside the hotels control. The weather being a favourite I've found.
I've lived in the middle east where some of the hotels are fabulously opulent, every whim catered for, and eye watering expensive, but according to some reviews on TA they might as well have been 2* dumps.
Keep an open mind and you will be fine. Enjoy.

Theimpossiblegirl · 18/07/2019 10:11

I agree that the loud groups will all be gone by the time you get there. The only advantage to the excessive school holiday price hikes. Have a lovely holiday.

NoBaggyPants · 18/07/2019 10:13

Which hotel is it?

wasamainey · 18/07/2019 10:20

They're lovely apartments op, it's a great location, have stayed a stone's throw away from it many times. That area isn't particularly lively, close to the action but not in the midst of it.
Take the reviews with a pinch of salt and have a great time.

Cryalot2 · 18/07/2019 10:24

Over the years we have had panic attacks with seeing crap reviews before going. A friend pointed out that most were good. So we have always went and they turned out ok. It sounds in a great location so go for it .

wasamainey · 18/07/2019 10:25

Thank you

I don't think there will be big groups in school hols, they wouldn't pay that much when they can go out of school hols and pay loads less..

I think youll be fine, especially as you can go out every night etc.

Dippypippy1980 · 18/07/2019 10:32

Okay, I have read he review and there is a fairly consistent complaint about noise and large groups of rowdy teens.

I agree that this doesn’t sound ideal for a quiet family holiday. I would ring the travel company you booked through (if you used one) and see if you can be moved to another complex. Life is too short for this crap🙂

NoBaggyPants · 18/07/2019 10:35

Not sure how to link to it but there's a review from a group who are moaning because the hotel told them it was a family hotel, and each time they were noisy the hotel staff stopped it. So it sounds like a family hotel with an odd group who are well managed by the staff.

You'll be fine. Have a lovely time.

Nesssie · 18/07/2019 10:51

People are very quick to complain but not so quick to praise, so the bad reviews will far outnumber the good ones. You have to take them with a pinch of salt.

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 18/07/2019 10:52

Just because there were large groups there when those people wrote the review, doesn't mean itllbe the same for you.Just go with an open mind,I'm sure itll be great.

zafferana · 18/07/2019 10:53

Young people don't tend to go in school holidays, so those annoying people who were disturbing guests recently will likely be gone by the time you travel. I'd go - as you say you can head to the beach and out to eat - but the guests change every week anyway. The reviewers probably just got unlucky with a rowdy bunch who'd booked the same week as them. Unlucky, but it shouldn't cause you to change your long-awaited holiday.

maddening · 18/07/2019 11:02

The groups prob won't be in summer hols as so expensive - they go for cheap getaways outside of hols.

Dieu · 18/07/2019 11:34

I would give it a chance, OP. There could be rowdy people anywhere you go. I hope you have a brilliant time SmileWine

Dippypippy1980 · 18/07/2019 11:41

Oh dear - I am in the minority here🙂.

People with small children can also be loud and rude. We are just back from a five star family resort, no young people but parents swearing loudly in the pool bar, parents allowing kids to watch iPads with me head phones in the restaurant, parents allowing children to repeatedly bang toys off tables for the entire meal, parents talking so loudly the audience couldn’t hear the entertainment,. I could go on.

Unfortunately you will encounter poorly behaved tourists in any resort. I am just too old to deal with groups of shrieking drunk teens

girlwithadragontattoo · 18/07/2019 11:45

Hi OP, as someone who works within this industry i can tell you guests complain about the most minor things and blow them up.
For example, if they've arrived and have a delay in getting to the property / hotel etc this amplify's the situation. When they eventually arrive in there rooms they'll notice everything and it then becomes a major problem. With regards to noise. If guess have arrived late and are tired from travelling this is also amplified and can end up in bad reviews.
A holiday is what you make of it.

floribunda18 · 18/07/2019 11:47

Did you not read reviews before booking? You do have to read between the lines, but I always read the reviews first. Especially if somewhere seems unusually cheap.

floribunda18 · 18/07/2019 11:51

Ah, sorry, you did. I wouldn't worry about recent reviews, though it's always pot luck in big places as to who is there at the same time as you, which can make or break a holiday.
