To think I can make money doing this?

I see so many bloggers making money and I think what if I could too! It looks really easy and there seems to be a lot of money to be made

I'm a sahm right now but I don't want to go back to the 9-5 after my child starts school in September. I want to make my own money
AIBU by thinking I could do it or am I being a fantasist? Have you ever wanted to start one but didn't? I can't get the idea of doing it out my head

Do you have a social media account with more than 3,000 real followers on any platform?

TidyDancer · 17/07/2019 19:40

What are you planning to blog about?

LittleLongDog · 17/07/2019 19:42

I thought 5,000 was the magic number @TheInebriati ?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/07/2019 19:43

Saturated market surely

ScreamingValenta · 17/07/2019 19:43

Do you have a unique selling point?

Proteinshakesandovieshat · 17/07/2019 19:44

Most bloggers that become popular out of nowhere, pay a PR Team.

I am friends with a lot of fitness bloggers and influencers. Any that have got famous in the last 2-3 years (or famous enough to make money) have used a PR company.

AwkwardPaws27 · 17/07/2019 19:44

There are so, so many bloggers now. Only a very small percentage make a living from it. You'd need to find a niche, I think.
Do you have a subject in mind? Do you have paid writing experience / web design / photography skills to help set up and continually update a visually appealing site?
It's possible, but I wouldn't say it is easy.

redribbonss · 17/07/2019 19:49

I was thinking of blogging about diy or something like that because I'm good at that and no I don't even use social media right now so haven't got any following at all

Have any of you tried blogging or even wanted to? It does look like fun to me but I worry I'm not being realistic

I did a small blog. It got fairly popular. Mainly because I have friends who promoted it.

But to be honest you need to post content on the blog 2/3 a week. And on social media 2/3 times per day.

And good photos too. Properly taken and edited then good content.

But as a I said, if you want to make money you need to look at getting a PR company.

Especially if you have no current SM presence. You want a following and want it quickly if you are looking at doing this instead of working come September.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 17/07/2019 19:55

Unless you are in the process of building your own house, renovating a interesting building etc I fail to see who would want to follow a diy blog.
What are you going to post about? If you don’t have a major project in the pipeline.

Proteinshakesandovieshat · 17/07/2019 19:55

Sorry. Forgot to say I quit doing it, too much like hard work.

I prefer my job

redribbonss · 17/07/2019 19:56

@Proteinshakesandovieshat why did you stop? Sounds like it was doing well

What does a PR Company do? Would they do all the social media stuff? I'll have to look into it

OP posts:
redribbonss · 17/07/2019 19:57

@Proteinshakesandovieshat cross post sorry :)

OP posts:
redribbonss · 17/07/2019 20:00

@Dontsweatthelittlestuff maybe I could do smaller diy projects or crafts maybe. I don't have a big project coming up and I don't own my house

Maybe there's an easier niche then or I could cover a lot of topics? But it does sound like it could be harder work than I thought! I've seen a lot of mum bloggers doing well and many bloggers make it look and sound easy. Maybe it's not

A pr company can do all your social media, I suppose. But that would cost a fortune.

Usually they get other bloggers to promote you, do collaborations with companies etc.

Personally, I dont think it is fun. It's a lot of hard work and Brain space. You are always thinking about content.

I prefer to spend my time relaxing. I have quite a lots of instgram followers so could, in theory start again. But it wasnt fun.

I own a brand in the fitness industry and some one else does our social media and website instead.

AwkwardPaws27 · 17/07/2019 20:02

Do you follow any DIY blogs? I'd start by checking out Simply The Nest www.simplythenest.com/simplythenestjournal
And look at her Instagram to get an idea of how often she posts, the quality of her pictures etc.
There are a lot of home renovation Instagram accounts, you'll get an idea of how many people are doing it (including me, but I only have 1000 followers).

Ellisandra · 17/07/2019 20:03

“would they do all the social media stuff?” - what do you mean by that? Blogging is the social media stuff.

Some people make money, most don’t. Start writing now - even if you’re not blogging, start writing so you can see whether you’re able to generate pieces.

ScratchyMap · 17/07/2019 20:03

I had a blog and made a little money from it. Nowhere near enough to live on, but a bit of pocket money. The blogging itself was easy. Getting the followers, the engagement and the brand partnerships was much harder. I stopped because I was no longer enjoying it- it became less about the creativity and more about constantly pushing for more views, more readers, more opportunities. The effort wasn’t worth the pay off.

Frouby · 17/07/2019 20:04

I vaguely looked at it about 6 months ago.

It's very competitive, you need either a USP or be able to write very well, plus a social media plan. If you have a USP and can write very well, chances are you are doing your USP fulltime and won't have either the time or the content to blog. There are simply too many people out there, probably blogging as a way to earn a secondary residual income with lots of support for the average Josephine to do anything other than make up the numbers.

Snoozeulose · 17/07/2019 20:05

I can’t see many people making much from this line of work

maddiemookins16mum · 17/07/2019 20:07

I think you’d be better off getting a proper job to be honest.

Ijwlad · 17/07/2019 20:12

I have a one that I get a small amount of income from but it's not my main job and most of that secondary income is from Instagram and YouTube rather then the blog, I fell into it kind of as I just wanted to document some things I was doing and it started to get traction, it's a very saturated market though and you will need to regularly put content out.
to make a decent amount of money, it involves a lot of work, something really unique and just plain luck. Id go back to a job and try blogging on the side until you made enough money that you could leave rather then just jumping into it.

prawnsword · 17/07/2019 20:13

this is a fantasy & will not make you money. To make $ you will need to be quite tech savvy. You don’t have a social media account, no online presence, you don’t know what a PR company does and have asked if they will handle your social media.

Just get a regular job, I don’t think you are cut out to be a full time blogger, sorry

ItsGoingTibiaK · 17/07/2019 20:16

Sorry to be brutal, if you are being hopelessly, hopelessly unrealistic.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 17/07/2019 20:17

*but, not if
