To think I can make money doing this?

I see so many bloggers making money and I think what if I could too! It looks really easy and there seems to be a lot of money to be made

I'm a sahm right now but I don't want to go back to the 9-5 after my child starts school in September. I want to make my own money
AIBU by thinking I could do it or am I being a fantasist? Have you ever wanted to start one but didn't? I can't get the idea of doing it out my head

After 26 years of being on the internet I'm pretty sure I've never read a blog. Genuinely don't know where to find them.

@LaurieFairyCake - really? Try typing 'mummy blog' in your search engine. About 1000 will come up. Hmm

LaurieFairyCake · 18/07/2019 08:40

Ok, you're right - I'm sure I could do an internet search and a gazillion would come up. But I mean who would trawl through all them looking for a blog of their interest?

That's exactly why I've never read a blog - they're not (can't believe I'm going to use the Pedlars word) CURATED.

Do millions of people really do this? Search though thousands of blogs everyday to find the one they want to read on DIY ?

I thought I was an efficient waster of internet time - that's taking it to a whole new level Grin

Lots of traffic for blogs isn't the same people reading every day, it's people googling a recipe or a specific DIY thing etc. Lots of recipes the first couple of hits tend to be blogs on Google.
Hence why you need to churn out content to try and maximise the exposure.

AwkwardPaws27 · 18/07/2019 09:10

LaurieFairyCake I've never found a blog by specifically searching for one - but what I have found is that I've searched something like "how to strip paint off a cast iron fireplace" and through that I've found several DIY / renovation blogs that have been really useful for tips for my own renovated. I find them useful for reviews of products and services too. They are a fab time waster Grin

HollowTalk · 18/07/2019 16:57

I agree with you Laurie. I've only read a couple which belong to friends of mine. I've never gone looking for one. I've looked on YouTube for demos of how to do things but wouldn't look for a blog to show me that.

ScaryBunnyPainting · 18/07/2019 17:04

I used to do it when I took a career break. It was my main income source however it took 70 hours a week to stay on top of. You need:

  • Decent photography skills
  • To stay on top of social media - not just posting but the ever changing algorithms and styles.
  • Good HMTL skills
  • Photo editing skills
  • Shit hot networking
  • Marketing talent
  • Ability to write
  • A USP
  • Thick skin
  • The will to answer emails until you fall asleep

On top of all that people have to like you and see you as fitting into their tribe before they will invest the time in following you.

It takes most bloggers a year to receive PR and 2 years to have enough traffic for companies to be drawn to advertise with you.

Really interesting and totally mixed replies... thank you it's given me a lot to think about.

I was thinking I could do a blog on Ikea hacks as I live near an Ikea and I was looking today and think it's something people like? I'm not sure if there's many bloggers doing well in that niche. I want to find some uk ones to use for inspiration.
I'm wondering if there are others like me who want to start a blog, what's stopping you? I think I'm worried that I'm not special enough or that I'm just imagining I could be successful but I can't hurt to try right?

There's a popular website where you can submit IKEA hacks - www.ikeahackers.net/

ScaryBunnyPainting · 18/07/2019 18:56

IKEA hacks are majorly saturated first by people who concentrate solely on that (and spend significant amount of money on it) but also by anyone who happens to do their own Ikea hack and also other DIY bloggers.

There is no money in a saturated market. None.

MitziK · 18/07/2019 18:58

Are you young, slim, blonde and pretty? Is your house huge and very beautiful?

shieldmaidenofrohan · 18/07/2019 19:23

The thing with blogs is that most people write them to talk about something they do (art, gardening, needlepoint) or tha they are passionate about (Russian history, Hogarth, the royals etc). You need to find something like that first, not second.

I've got a blog attached to my cake business website that I desperately need to do some content for. I'm going to be entering my first international cake competition this year and I'm going to blog about the design process, then throughout the creation.

itwasadarkandstormy · 22/07/2019 18:05

What have you decided OP?

redribbonss · 22/07/2019 20:25

@itwasadarkandstormy I think I'm going to go for it. Just looking into some uk bloggers who are doing well :) and seeing if I can buy a course in it to help me as I really like the idea of it. Have you ever blogged before?

Of course you can make money blogging.

It takes time and tons of effort. You won't make significant money straight away.

You don't need to be a social media blogger either, if you can get enough traffic from search engines.

Pinterest is good for getting traffic quicker than from search engines (it takes some time for google to trust you and start ranking your site) and it's especially good for DIY and food blogs but you do need good photos, and better blog posts.

You need to be a good writer and make sure you're writing about what other people will find useful, not what you want to write about. It's not the same thing.

Look up digitalnomadwannabe.com and do exactly what she says. HTH.
