AIBU to think that my Fitbit is trying to tell me something?

I've been wearing my new FitBit for the last two weeks since starting my post-holiday fitness kick. My best friend has just bought one too and we have been comparing stats.

What is worrying me is that my FitBit says I'm only getting approximately 2.5 hours sleep per night. Now as far as I am aware, this cannot possibly be correct! I have always felt like I have slept relatively well. I go to bed at 10pm and my alarm goes off at 7am.

I don't have any trouble getting to sleep, I have no memory of waking/tossing/turning in the night. My partner often leaves around 6am whereas I don't need to be up until 7am, he wakes me to say goodbye and I fall straight back to sleep for an hour. When my alarm goes off, I don't feel particularly shattered or unable to get up etc, just a little sleepy?

Speaking to my friend, her FitBit registers her as getting 7-8hours sleep. So we swapped FitBits incase it was a glitch with mine, but lo and behold, mine still reads 2-3hours. Tried tightening it, wearing it on the other wrist, but no change.

Posted too soon!

After reading the below article, I am wondering whether I have some underlying condition that my watch is trying to tell me about? I am unsure how the FitBit registers sleep and what your body tells it?

Could you click on the today bar, screen shot and post what that says?

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2019 12:29

Those readings look like the simplified ones I get sometimes when the Fitbit has been unable to do a proper reading for some reason.

optimisticpessimist01 · 17/07/2019 12:29

Click on further details for today's where it has light sleep, deep sleep , REM etc and post that

optimisticpessimist01 · 17/07/2019 12:30

I think I am correct in saying the Fitbit measures sleep by measuring heart rate (?) so if your strap is too loose, or it just can't pick it up for what ever reason that will be the more likely problem rather than a heart issue

MRex · 17/07/2019 12:33

Are you potentially living a double life, going out at night. Check for unexpected payments into your bank account, a trapdoor hidden under a rug that leads to a room full of weapons etc. Check your step count and set up "map my walk" to see where you go.

Also, are you tired?

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2019 12:35

Here’s a shot of mine - can you see some days it didn’t read it properly for some reason. Probably sweaty wrists Grin

That is the "not proper " screening measurements. Try reinstalling. It should come up much more grafic/detailed .

That, or you are a zombie

optimisticpessimist01 · 17/07/2019 12:37

Have you updated the app recently? I was having a few issues with it not properly syncing and I updated it and it's been perfect since!

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2019 12:37

This is what Fitbit app says

WHY DON'T I SEE SLEEP STAGES TODAY?

There are a few scenarios where you might see your sleep pattern (which shows your time asleep, restless, and awake) instead of sleep stages:
If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely. For best results, wear your device higher on your wrist (about 2-3 finger widths above your wrist bone). The band should feel secure but not too tight.
If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app (instead of simply wearing your device to bed). For more information on automatic sleep tracking, see How do I track my sleep?
If you slept for less than 3 hours.
If your device’s battery is critically low.

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2019 12:38

Yep think mine was because of the battery actually

NewGrandad · 17/07/2019 12:39

Mine has been like that for a while now. Was going fine before. Yesterday there was a firmware update and surprise surprise it recorded correctly last night.

Maybe time to reset?

gamerchick · 17/07/2019 12:42

This is mine and if you click on each one you get a more detailed night.

It's still logging the sleep and wake up time, it must be recording something for each one.

Ooh gamerchick, you had a proper lie-in on Sunday GrinEnvy

namechangeninjaevervigilant · 17/07/2019 12:45

Try adjusting the sleep sensitivity settings. Go to Account: Advanced Settings: Sleep Sensitivity. I have mine on normal and it’s usually fairly accurate.

Seren10 · 17/07/2019 12:54

So this is what it says when I click on it.

I don't know what I am doing wrong! I have tried tightening it and wearing it on the other wrist already.

Do I delete the whole app and reinstall?

Can you show your heart rate for the same night, as well as your steps etc?

optimisticpessimist01 · 17/07/2019 12:57

You have the basic version there, it should be much more detailed like pp have posted pictures of

Its definitely the app that is the problem, either delete and reinstall or just do an update from the app store, either way will bring you the most up to date version

When I was updating mine the description did actually say "bug fixes" so maybe its something they've ironed out

Either that or there's something about the way your wearing it or sleeping that is making it not track your sleep correctly! I'd try updating the app first

optimisticpessimist01 · 17/07/2019 12:59

Even if it was your heart rate that is causing it to say you have such little sleep, it should still be in more detail e.g. there'd be lots of red spikes for awake, and it'd tell you how much time you had spent in each sleep stage

gamerchick · 17/07/2019 13:02

Ooh gamerchick, you had a proper lie-in on Sunday grin

And enjoyed every second Grin

Do you have a charge OP? My charge records sleep like that. But that sleep pattern is telling you that you seem to be very restless during the night and waking up a lot. If you fall asleep easily then it could point to something like sleep apnoea.

Seren10 · 17/07/2019 13:02

App is updated - it updated on 12 July according to my iPhone.

I will try uninstalling and reinstalling but will this make me lose all my previous other data too? I use it as a food diary so don't want to lose all that if possible.

OP posts:
PocketFluff · 17/07/2019 13:03

Do you move a lot in your sleep? Maybe it thinks you are awake or restless but actually sleeping.

Seren10 · 17/07/2019 13:03

@gamerchick the thing is, I don't feel like I am waking up! I feel fine, completely rested etc? Which doesn't tie in with the fact I am apparently only sleeping 2 hours.

OP posts:
Seren10 · 17/07/2019 13:05

@PocketFluff I don't think so, if I do I am asleep and completely unaware, and OH hasn't noticed me doing anything odd, but unless I install some sort of CCTV I guess I won't know?

OP posts:
AnchorDownDeepBreath · 17/07/2019 13:05

My Fitbit used to do this; I reinstalled a few times but it never worked so they replaced it. This was a really early model, though. They couldn't really explain why it wasn't getting detailed tracking, they told me to wear it tighter or try to move less Grin
