To report my neighbour to landlord?

Ok so...i live in a block of six flats. On the ground floor there are two flats that smell bad. Old lady flat stinks of smoke so bad that when she opens the door the entire stairwell smells of it for hours. However she doesn’t have her door open much so I can live with that even if it’s gross anyway the other groundfloor flat stinks of I’m not even sure what. It’s like rotting stale meat and fried foods smell. Which wouldn’t bother me if he didn’t leave his front door wedged open ALL day so that the smell fills the communal stairwell and he is right by the main front door. It’s vile! Not only this but he has piled a load of tools oil petrol and spray paint and rubbish outside the building on a communal flowerbed opposite his parking space. I don’t understand why he has to leave all this out but surely he shouldn’t be allowed to do this, especially the fuel can?

Would I be unreasonable to contact the landlord about the junk outside and the smell?

Bumping this one for you, OP. But sounds like the stuff in the communal space at least could definitely be addressed. Good luck with it!

Cheeserton · 17/07/2019 12:42

YANBU. Do complain - sounds grim and totally unnecessary.

TripleASays · 17/07/2019 12:44

I would definitely get in touch with the landlord about this. Sounds revolting!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 17/07/2019 12:46

Absolutely I’d be complaining!

mbosnz · 17/07/2019 12:46

I think the landlord would very much appreciate the heads up, particularly with reference to the odour issues!

Pipandmum · 17/07/2019 12:47

Yes do. Surprised the landlord allows smoking inside.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 17/07/2019 12:51

Of course complain!

HennyPennyHorror · 17/07/2019 12:57

If you know who the landlord is do it. If not, try your local council's environmental health team.

missmouse101 · 17/07/2019 13:05

The management committee who run the flats need to be informed. Totally unacceptable.

81Byerley · 17/07/2019 13:20

Definitely complain.

mumwon · 17/07/2019 13:41

as a land lord please do - but - if the tenant is difficult in can be incredibly difficult to get them to change - hopefully a written warning will make the tenant change - private land lords don't have the power that everybody assumes

timeforawine · 17/07/2019 13:43

Do it, that's grim

CSIblonde · 17/07/2019 13:52

Grim. Yes, report. Tho if he left the door open all day where I live his flat would be robbed. It's a nice area but next door had their weekly 5am bulk milk delivery nicked & I've come home to find a guy trying the side gate twice now.

DanceItOut · 17/07/2019 16:10

Thanks all. I have composed an email to the landlord of the block today and am going to double check it in the morning to make sure it’s not overall emotive or dramatic but straight to the point and serious. I mean because of this neighbour leaving his stuff outside some teenagers used his spray paint to graffiti the side of the building and another persons car so I’m hoping they will at the very least do something about the stuff outside.

Honestly I don’t think anyone would want to rob this guys house even with the door open, it looks like it’s already been robbed!

OP posts:
Simkin · 17/07/2019 16:14

Have you tried talking to the guy yourself?

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 16:18

It's a safety issue apart from anything else

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 16:19

In my experience, people who behave like this with no concern for those around them are rarely open to being spoken to sadly.

Simkin · 17/07/2019 16:27

I don't altogether disagree msmith501 is just part of me thinks he should be given a chance before the landlord gets involved (assuming mental illness of some kind tbh) and another part of me thinks the first thing a landlord will ask is 'have you spoken to him?'

mumwon · 17/07/2019 16:56

if I were told there was an issue like this I would find an excuse to book (yep that's what you should do) an appointment with tenant BUT I would probably have a look outside before asap & I would be grateful that you had told me
