to think ASDA is as cheap as Lidl/Aldi...

Popped into an ASDA store today on the way back from an appointment to grab some bits for tea and I was agog at the prices. We don't have one nearby and I usually shop at Lidl, occasionally Morrisons if I'm feeling flush ! I've just discovered they will deliver to me though... do you think it is just as cheap as Lidl. I'm considering doing a weekly shop, but I'm time precious this week so don't want to waste time adding all to my basket if it's going to come out £££ compared to Lidl....

Are Asda still doing that thing where you can end up with no money and no delivery? There was some sort of glitch in the system, so that if you didn't have double the amount needed for the shop in your account, you were stuffed.

Delivery depends on local depot. I've ordered online for family members and when self catering holiday, and it varies quite a lot. Local to me, I prefer Tesco. I have delivery savers for Asda, Morrisons and Tesco (and possibly not enough of a life), and it depends.

I find delivery less expensive as I'm less like to impulse buy. I still impulse buy, but to a lesser extent.

Not quite as cheap but you can do a full shop their so worth the extra ££. I've tried with lidal and Aldi but there's so many basic things they don't do I can't be bothered with having to do a second shop.

I shop at Asda because i can do a whole shop there asda's own brand's are cheap, can't do a full shop at my local Lidl and Aldi as the shop's are to small and not a lot of choice, Tesco isn't as cheap as Asda

The reality is that all the supermarkets have things they are particularly competitive price wise with and other items that are higher profits. Overall on an annual basis the discounters tend to be better priced if they stock it but on any week other supermarkets have better special offers and better ranges. The cheaper way is to shop from several stores throughout the month to capitalise on the best deals

my cousin works in the factory that makes the pastry parcels i nthe freezer isle.anyone tried them?

Thegreymethod · 16/07/2019 12:50

I've found it's a little bit cheaper but doesn't have everything I need so end up spending more time and money having to go to another shop anyway so I don't bother anymore.

A big shop in Asda costs me £100-£115. A big shop in Aldi with a few bits n bobs i can't get in there from Asda (ie. DD anti reflux milk etc) costs me £75 ish. It's a no brainer. And I've been lucky enough to never have had a problem with fruit and veg I find it lasts as well as any other supermarket.

My Lidl shop has resulted in
Mouldy blueberries,
Unripe tomatoes (not noticed in either case due to being hidden underneath),
Woody avocados,
Disgusting Greek cheese pastry stuff, claggy with palm oil,
Foul coleslaw like some kind of rancid cream,
Over salted salmon (the stuff that comes in packs of 2 slices) which was inedible
Very tough sliced beef
Slimy salad leaves
Pastrami that was vomit inducing due to weird ingredients
'Fresh' fish that stank to high heaven and made the kitchen reek for 6 days afterwards in spite of continued cleaning and scrubbing of everything. The second pack went in the bin unopened and I hate waste
Fake Lurpack that goes watery if you melt it to make a tarte tatin
3 ply toilet paper that disintegrates and your fingers go through, they replaced the Floralys with flowers on and it is now crap.

The bakery looks nice but unfortunately is always in a busy part of the store and near the door so flies can settle on the uncovered goods, along with the sneezes and children poking the lower shelf contents, other people dragging their grubby sleeves through the muffins and feeling the bread rolls.

However I do like the buckets of Greek style yogurt which costs less in Morrisons
The washing powder, lavender one although it doesn't get stains out
Sometimes the kitchen rolls

And I am struggling to think of any more plusses. The stores are like a bunfight, the aisle of crap is always like a jumble sale and the customers are rude and grumpy, possibly brought on by the store being so bloody awful

Due to the above, I try to avoid it at all costs. You get what you pay for, it is a false economy as so much goes off.

Asda is utter shite and horrible. That's the lowest of the low there.

Unfinishedkitchen · 17/07/2019 20:37

The Walmart family from America who own Asda have most of their staff working all hours but pay them so little many are collecting food stamps which can only be redeemed in Walmart so I’ll give Asda a pass.

Reallywanttomovenow · 18/07/2019 20:04

well no. the average shop in aldi is about 60/70 quid for a full trolley.
but in asda i can spend 30/40 on just a few bits in a basket and come out pissed off I didn't just walk that much further to aldi.

it really is alot more expensive but you probably wouldn't notice if youre not poor

PixieLumos · 18/07/2019 20:35

Lidl and Aldi are much smaller with less choice - I think that’s why it’s easier to save money shopping there. You’re not getting distracted by a huge array of products and three for two offers so you can stick to your list (as long as you skip the middle random tat isles Grin)

Sunflower20 · 18/07/2019 20:37

In my opinion Lidl/Aldi = false economy. Hardly any cheaper yet completely shite quality, less choice too. I went to Lidl the other day for the first time in ages and all the fruits were mouldy.
They're not always the cheapest either....
