to think ASDA is as cheap as Lidl/Aldi...

Popped into an ASDA store today on the way back from an appointment to grab some bits for tea and I was agog at the prices. We don't have one nearby and I usually shop at Lidl, occasionally Morrisons if I'm feeling flush ! I've just discovered they will deliver to me though... do you think it is just as cheap as Lidl. I'm considering doing a weekly shop, but I'm time precious this week so don't want to waste time adding all to my basket if it's going to come out £££ compared to Lidl....

Our asda has the best cherry Pl tomatoes - 250g for about a pound and way nicer than the waitrose or sainsbury ones. They also often have very good stone fruit; but bananas, blueberries etc less good. Have no idea why, but it is consistent.

PonderingPanda · 16/07/2019 07:41

I use Tesco delivery. I have the cheapest option at £3.49/mth so less then £1 a week. It would cost me more than that to drive to the shops.

I also look at the time spent actually shopping as l think that's a factor in the overall costs too.

I'm only really loyal to Tesco for their clubcard points as l use them to pay for trips.

PinkFlowerFairy · 16/07/2019 07:51

I went off loyalty carda when I decided I could just save the extra 10-20£ on my shopping bill because its Tescos>asda/lidle etc towards trips directly!

Its not really a saving when there food is more expensive in the first place.

PinkFlowerFairy · 16/07/2019 07:52

Agree on the delivery though!

Fannybaws52 · 16/07/2019 07:56

Not here they aren't.

Our typical weekly shop is cheapest at Aldi but missing a few bits at £35-£40. Full shop can be done at Tesco £45-50 but at Asda the shop is £60 odds.

Its the same food so I don't know why asda come out £5-£10 dearer than Tesco and I was shocked but it made me switch my loyalty. Used to adore Asda as they have the biggest range of choice and a pleasant store to shop in.

BentBaastard · 16/07/2019 07:59

Asda is massive though.

I lose the will to live half way round the store.

I prefer Aldi with a Sainsbury’s top up.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 16/07/2019 08:03

I find that in Lidl I always spend more than I should because I'm seduced by the weekly foreign food promotions. So not such a bargain shop as it should in theory be.

I never really got on with ASDA and have always found it a bit 'downmarket'.

EssentialHummus · 16/07/2019 08:03

I shop in Asda, Sainsb. and Lidl regularly, with occasional Ocado deliveries too. In all of them I can do a weekly shop for £50 without scrimping (two adults, one toddler), but generally I find Asda much cheaper on processed and bakery stuff, snacks and pop, and Lidl better for fruit and veg, meat, fish, freezer things, cleaning. Though the giant Asda near me has a wonderful world food aisle with big cheap bags of lentils, rice, spices etc and great tinned chopped tomatoes for 35p a tin that we put in everything.

Also, Asda clothes, especially for DC, when you get them on sale can't be beaten on price. Some very gendered, but I bought DD some summer t-shirts and shorts for £1 recently. That was very clearly "end of the line"/discount upon discount though.

Pinktinker · 16/07/2019 08:05

I hate Asda, their online shops are appalling. So many missing items and their substitutions are ridiculous. I always had to pop to my local Morrisons the day after an Asda delivery to replace the missing items, waste of time. They once tried substituting quorn for real meat Hmm. Quality of their fruit and veg is shit too.

PonderingPanda · 16/07/2019 08:08

@PinkFlowerFairy - l agree with what you're saying about loyalty cards, but l think as with most things it's what individuals find is important. So for me not having the trauma of the actual shop and hurting my back pushing those dreadful trollies outweighs the delivery costs.

Same with the extra costs but building up on the clubcard. Getting 3 times the amount is worth it, especially as l also have a Tesco credit card so l double my points on the shopping.

If Tesco stopped the clubcard l would reevaluate my loyalty

NotJust3SmallWords · 16/07/2019 08:09

I didn't find the Asda delivery service very good. Always had loads of substitutions when we ordered with them. I also spend far less money doing a shop at Aldi, maybe it's partly because it's cheaper and partly because there's less choice and I therefore can't be tempted to pick up expensive things that I don't really need!

Wereonabearhunt · 16/07/2019 08:13

It totally depends what you buy. Asda is cheapest for us cause we can have EVERYTHING delivered at once for one fair price. When we use Aldi or lidl we then have to pop into Tesco for the few bits aldi/lidl dont sell. In MY area the fresh food is better from asda than aldi too, but i totally appreciate that is different per area

PinkFlowerFairy · 16/07/2019 08:13

Where we used to live asda delivery was unbelievably terrible. I am a little scarred for life by waiting up past 10 for nappies/etc wondering if they were coming and no way of contact.....and then on the days they did turn up having so many substitutions.

We've been a bit of a supermarket tart recently and flit between either offers or convenience. Even the odd M and S salad sometimes.

PinkFlowerFairy · 16/07/2019 08:14

We have a fab asda if you shop in perso though!

Morgan12 · 16/07/2019 08:17

I love Asda. Their pizzas and Indian curries are amazing. Their own brand cereal tastes like branded, sometimes better. Their beans are great.

I've been to Aldi twice and both times the fruit was rank and the chicken was off.

I buy my chicken breast from Musclefood. They do 2.5kg of wonky chicken for £9. Large breasts and last ages. Does 10+ meals for us. And tastes better than any supermarket chicken.

pikapikachu · 16/07/2019 08:20

I suspect it depends what sort of stuff you buy.

I buy meat, fish, dried food, frozen food, toiletries and cleaning products at Aldi. I buy fruit, veg and branded goods at Morrisons.

Clutterbugsmum · 16/07/2019 08:21

I can't do a weekly shop at the Aldi near me as it's small and doesn't stock a lot of what we eat.

Hopefully when they build the new one near me it will be bigger and stock more fresh foods.

I tend to do a 'bigger shop' in Asda (again it is a smaller one) every 2 - 2 1/2 weeks rather then weekly.

LonelyTiredandLow · 16/07/2019 08:22

Adsa is cheap but similar in price to Aldi. Trouble is with Asda you have isles packed with cheap nasty rubbish at every turn. Sausages with no meat in, fizzy pop in a rainbow of colours, processed food of all varieties - in Aldi you at least feel the processed crap is kept to a minimum to reflect what a healthier trolly would look like. I also trust EU standards across the board vs American so I wouldn't be amazed if there were studies showing Wallmart are bringing in banned substances in some of the US produced food.

PinkFlowerFairy · 16/07/2019 08:23

We've done muscle food before and it was fab chicken to eat

But we stopped as I thought it was quite unhappy chicken shipped in from random countries with different regs and not British.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 16/07/2019 08:24

It depends. I use all different supermarkets depending on quality and price: Aldi for yoghurt, brioche buns, croissants, falafel and some fresh/frozen veg and fruit, Lidl for lentil crisps and bakery, Tesco and Asda for quorn, tinned stuff, loo rolls and pet food and M&S for their fruit and veg offers (600g or more of amazing mixed tomatoes £1 and 4 Jazz apples 70p were recent delights). I generally get toiletries and cleaning stuff at Home Bargains or Poundland.

Lillyhatesjaz · 16/07/2019 08:27

I vary between asda, morrisons and tesco with an occasional pop in to liddell.
I do shop with a list but if an item I normally buy is on offer I buy several and if its full price I might try a different shop or wait until next week. I rarely pay full price for long lasting items. I do realise that this method needs the ability to have quite a bit of value of shopping stored in the house and not everyone can afford to do this. I am fortunate not to have to budget weekly. last week I spent £200 for the next few weeks I will likely spend £30.

Lovemusic33 · 16/07/2019 08:30

Tesco- best for veg, costs a bit more but lasts all week so less waste.
Aldi and Lidl - cheapest for meat and fish.
Morrison’s - more choice of meat cuts and fish, reasonable price but not good sale by dates.
Asda - cheaper own brands, good offers, meat not as cheap, veg doesn’t last long.

Over all I think Lidl and Aldi are going to be cheaper as there’s less choice so less likely to pick up things you don’t really need (apart from the middle isle), but if you wanted to save money you would have to visit more than one supermarket.

PizzaTaste · 16/07/2019 08:31

Sure the prices are the same but the quality is shit. I actually don’t understand how Asda are still going

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 16/07/2019 08:33

I like Aldi and Lidl but it’s hit and miss on availability. Lidl always has bread tempting me though...yum
Asda online I find ok and less tempting for ad hoc bits than in person.
I generally find the only way to shop well is to know my freezer contents and plan every meal and the day we eat it though

AnnieOH1 · 16/07/2019 08:47

Aldi's demographic is changing though. I doubt ASDA are stocking buffalo mozzarella or Iberico chorizo. They will of course be stocking the usual 50p mozzarella balls and the £1.25 chorizo which is cheaper than the Aldi products I mentioned. They seem to be removing a lot of their "essentials range" too unless I've gone blind to it. They're adding things like the Irish farmhouse yoghurt in glass jars at around 70p each or blue hen's eggs to rival Clarence Court but at half the price.

Aldi are at last jumping through the Cruelty Free International (BUAV) approvals on their already animal friendly, I'm pretty sure ASDA aren't cruelty free.

I don't hate ASDA, we do shop there occasionally but it is a little out the way to our regular stores. I find if we do shop there I end up choosing brands over their Chosen by You stuff as what I've tried so far in their own range just hasn't been right for me.
