School Reports

It is my first year as a school mum. I went to school abroad so have little experience of the English Way.

Our kids got their reports today (end of Reception). One of the mums keeps going on about how their PFB got "exceeding" on everything and that her kid is top of the class, if not the best in the whole country.

This is the same mum that told me she could run faster than me and everyone else, but sadly there was no parents' race on Sports Day to prove it.

Is this as exceptional as she says or do lots of kids get these results?

Not got my dd's report yet as she accidentally brought home the wrong bag. No idea what her report will say.

Some people like to boast. Some people like to put others down.
I wouldn't give her a second thought to be honest. Not worth the drama.

Brakebackcyclebot · 15/07/2019 19:54

Ignore her. There is always (at least) one.....

Digestive28 · 15/07/2019 19:55

Doubt they would either know or tell her if they did that her child was best in country. They get assessed against national levels so may be expected or exceeding those but very broad. Alternatively, maybe it’s true and she has a mini Matilda?!

BykerBykerOoh · 15/07/2019 19:55

There’s a kid in my child’s class whose mother frequently tells me she’s top of the class in this that or the other. My child (who doesn’t know what the mother has said) tells me the classmate is a fibber and she can’t believe a word that comes out of her mouth.

Nod, smile, and concentrate on your own child’s progress from year to year.

Imustbemad00 · 15/07/2019 19:58

They really don’t get marked like that in Early Years. They are either emerging, developing or secure. They are expected to meet the early years goals in 7 areas. That’s the framework the teachers will follow when writing reports. So she’s probably exaggerating.

Thingsdogetbetter · 15/07/2019 19:59

Top of the whole country?! Lol. How is God's name would she know that? ! And I'm pretty sure they don't put class rating on reports either, so how the f$ck does she know pfb is even top of class? If this bs, and running faster than other mums, is all she can find to boast about she's got a sad little life. Great that her pfb has exceeded the expected progress in school subjects, but that doesn't make her and her pfb better than everyone in the country - which she seems to think. Just that she has an academically gift child, not a genius.

Bless her for her desperate boasting. Lol

Aquilla · 15/07/2019 20:00

Reception has 'Exceeding' here.

HeadintheiClouds · 15/07/2019 20:00

No teacher tells a parent that their child is top of the class! As to how you would ascertain they were the best in the country (at Reception age!!)... Grin
Never happened. Ignore these wombles and celebrate your daughter, whatever her results turn out to be.

Soubriquet · 15/07/2019 20:00

She’s boasting and likely to be bragging better than what it is

My dd’s School report was brilliant. However I didn’t go about saying she’s “exceeding” in this section and is this level in the book band

They’re being proud and then there is boasting

Just ignore

Mumski45 · 15/07/2019 20:00

In my experience its those who shout loudest about these achievements that are most likely to be exaggerating them. She is not expecting to have to prove it and I would be suspicious as how does she know that her PFB is top of the class unless she knows everyone else's levels which is highly unlikely.

Most people I know with very clever children have been very discrete about it and careful not to brag/put others down.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/07/2019 20:00

Exceeding in all areas is rare but not necessarily best in the whole country rare.

She has done you a huge favour though. Now you know that she’s the parent you need to avoid like the plague in the playground.

MissEliza · 15/07/2019 20:01

I don't think boasting parents is a particularly English thing! Surely you've come across people like that before?

AbbyHammond · 15/07/2019 20:01

Most kids get "expected" at the end of Reception.

Some, mostly older ones born September - December, get some or all "exceeding".

Some, mostly younger ones and boys, get some or all "emerging".

LolaSmiles · 15/07/2019 20:02

There's always one who loves bragging and in my experience they are never the parents of truly exceptional or remarkable children. They seem to think their child's report is a reflection on their own amazing parenting skills and will probably take any opportunity to boast for the next 11 years of schooling.

Smile and ignore. Smile

Howlovely · 15/07/2019 20:04

Oh cringe! From experience, people who boast about their children's achievements are usually exaggerating drastically.
In my part of the UK (SW) EYFS children are assessed as 'emerging', 'expected' or 'exceeding', I'm guessing different areas have different names for it.
Don't take any notice of her, OP. She's making herself look silly, nobody else.

Ineedtoknowit · 15/07/2019 20:05

Ignore her. People like this are so annoying.
To the poster who said early years don’t mark in this way, they do here, my son is in reception and the report has expected and exceeding

Howlovely · 15/07/2019 20:06

Sorry, I cross posted with lots of others there, I wasn't intentionally repeating what PP had said!

HeadintheiClouds · 15/07/2019 20:07

Exceeding in Reception is really no indicator of how the child’s progression through school will go, so don’t be alarmed if your child doesn’t reach these dizzy heights Grin
The summer borns have a tendency to catch up and even outstrip those quicker off the starting blocks.

Whoopsies · 15/07/2019 20:07

My ds's (October born) reception report is exceeding in all areas, so possible. But I wouldn't take from that that he is 'top of the class let alone the country. And I haven't told anyone but his dad!

AWhistlingWoman · 15/07/2019 20:08

DD3 (so not my PFB!) got exceeding in everything.

She is an autumn born girl as Abby says. Probably more a bit of a reflection of when their birthday falls than anything else. I certainly don't suspect she is top of her class to be honest, let alone the whole country Grin

You do have to challenge this Mum to a race now!

colourlessgreenidea · 15/07/2019 20:08

One of the mums keeps going on about how their PFB got "exceeding" on everything and that her kid is top of the class, if not the best in the whole country.

This is the same mum that told me she could run faster than me and everyone else, but sadly there was no parents' race on Sports Day to prove it.

She sounds awesome! I wish I knew someone like this.

Though I am finding “if not the best in the whole country” a bit hard to believe Hmm

Mumski45 · 15/07/2019 20:09

FYI if you want the maths in 2018 15.3% of reception kids in England got exceeding in all areas which amounts to about 100,000 children. She can hardly therefore conclude that her PFB is top in the country.

I would just ignore her and be confident that your dd will be doing just fine. Smile

colourlessgreenidea · 15/07/2019 20:10

She has done you a huge favour though. Now you know that she’s the parent you need to avoid like the plague in the playground.

Are you mad?! I’d be seeking her out & engaging her in conversation at every possible opportunity!

AbbyHammond · 15/07/2019 20:11

In previous years it was around 2-3% getting exceeding in all areas, so yes it's likely top of the class or year group, but not best in the country.

Glovesick · 15/07/2019 20:17

Thanks for reassurance.

@MissEliza I just meant I am not used to the grading at such a young age and no idea what is good and what is exceptional. Of course there are boastful kids everywhere

By the sounds of it, all exceeding is fairly special but not a free ticket to join MENSA.

This lady is seriously annoying, but I just wanted to sense check I wasn't being too quick to judge. Thanks for answers
