Year 6 leavers

Crochetymum · 15/07/2019 19:31

Anybody else have a year 6 leaving this time?
My son is and he's having a prom type thing, only at the school. He's got a suit and I've bought his ticket, he's asked me this afternoon (the prom is this Thursday) "so what am I arriving in?" I was just Confused. He said oh so and so is getting a limo, I just said , you're 11, we'll take you in our car, it's only down the road. Am I missing something? Is this more of a big deal than I thought? I just took it as the leavers disco. Please tell me I'm not being mean 🤔
I see the end of high school one as more of a big thing, but these things are becoming more common and it's a bit of a stress, along with the leaver's assembly and performance, plus getting ready for high school

DD is Yr6 leaver. They are doing a leavers assembly. School sent out the email today. The leavers assembly is at 1.30 for an hour and a half. Thanks for all the warning, and the work-friendly timing, school.

They are having a party when the assembly finishes, until 5pm, that's it, so thankfully no suits and ties and limos.

familycourtq · 15/07/2019 19:36

YANBU OP BTW.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 15/07/2019 19:38

Jesus no, you aren’t being mean. Since when did this become a thing?!

TidyDancer · 15/07/2019 19:39

Why is this made into such a big thing now? It was a disco in my day.

Quandary2018 · 15/07/2019 19:40

My DS has his leavers party this weekend just gone- he went in shorts and T-shirt- definitely no limos for anyone YANBU!

Chuffingchuff · 15/07/2019 19:40

I dont have a year 6 leaver yet, but I know parents from our school who do have year 6 leavers and they have organised a prom, had suits/tux/dresses, limo's the lot! The parents organised it though, nothing to do with the school. I feel like it's a all a bit much for 10/11 year olds

fedup21 · 15/07/2019 19:42

Leavers disco here for Y6-shorts and T-shirt and an ice-cream van on the school field. No limo-we will be walking Grin.

stopitandtidyupp · 15/07/2019 19:42

It does seem a lot. We have two leavers play performances. A leavers assembly 2-3 on Friday. Then a disco in a night club 6-9 with mocktails and a photo booth.

A limo would tip me over the edge.

Pineapplefish · 15/07/2019 19:43

I have a y6 leaver, they’re having a party at the village hall with a home made disco (someone’s iPod and speakers), BBQ and a bouncy castle. She’ll wear shorts and a T shirt and there’s no way anyone will be getting a limo!

RoundingError · 15/07/2019 19:43

We have a BBQ and water fight planned (at school, but organised and paid for by the families), plus endless plays / concerts / assemblies / special trips / lunches. I’m feeling quite grumpy about it all, tbh. It’s not that big a deal.

Crochetymum · 15/07/2019 19:49

Ah Thanks everyone so far. I remember just having a leavers book to sign and we signed our shirts/t shirts. I just talked him down about it, it's only 5-7 at the school, why are the talking about a limo 🤪. Hopefully it's not everyone who's arriving in style and our Mondeo will have to do x

No limo here. They have a school disco (a new for this year) awards evening and some of the mums have organised a year 6 party in a local social club

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/07/2019 20:00

Dd is a yr6 leaver. They had an outdoor party / sleepover as opposed to prom. I think I have read threads of the limos being a thing and the parents clubbing together and get the minimum number of limos as they seat tons of people. Really unnecessary at this age especially.

thewayoftheplatypus · 15/07/2019 20:06

Ah old school friend posted pictures on FB of her son arriving at his Y6 prom in a super car- I didn’t even realise prom was a thing to be honest, let alone all the extravagance.

At DS school they all go to pizza express for dinner - the PTA pays

Sparklingbrook · 15/07/2019 20:14

I missed out on all this due to a three tier system here so Year 6 is the middle year of Middle School. High School in Year 8, no Yr 7 Prom.

I think save all the prom stuff for Year 11/13.

Purplejay · 15/07/2019 20:14

My son left y6 last year. Out of 70+ kids there were maybe 10 -15 fancy cars. The head allowed them on the playground and we enjoyed walking round them and seeing all the kids dressed up. Most were owned by family members. Maybe half a dozen hired them Someone did book a stretch limo but could not get it down the cul de sac! I told DS we couldn’t afford it. He understood. He went on his hover board!

Snappedandfarted2019 · 15/07/2019 20:15

Ours are having a leavers assembly and going to a restaurant tomorrow after mass.

irregularegular · 15/07/2019 20:16

I think it is ridiculous at Yr 6. Leaving party of some sort, yes. Prom with formal dress and limos, no.

Curlyshabtree · 15/07/2019 20:16

Assembly, bowling trip and a jig about to some music in the hall.
Why oh why the limos/sports cars???? What kind of message does this send? I find it all terrifying.

Hotpinkangel19 · 15/07/2019 20:21

Ours are going to a indoor play centre, having a picnic/BBQ and the parents have organised a class water fight on the field after school (a leavers tradition!)
Their normal disco was last week. No prom here!

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 15/07/2019 20:23

DD is year 6 and going to her leavers disco in a few days. The head (and the previous head for that matter) insist it is a leavers disco and not a ‘prom’ and turning up in limos or similar has been banned for years as apparently certain parents and children got carried away one year and it caused a lot of upset with some. I agree with schools decision on that.

I’ve breathed a sigh of relief money wise that DD isn’t bothered/is totally against the idea of dressing up and plans to wear converse, leggings and a t shirt. She says at least a couple of her friends with be wearing similar.

itsabongthing · 15/07/2019 20:24

Gosh I hope the ridiculous ‘prom’ idea doesn’t take off for my younger DCs. My eldest is year 6 and they have a good old leavers disco and pool party on a different day. Also a leavers assembly and a leavers book and class hoodies.
Actually now it’s written down it is quite a lot!

GU24Mum · 15/07/2019 20:26

DS's class had a party running round somewhere outside so nothing more than trainers, shorts & t-shirt were required thankfully. He may have washed beforehand as it was a special occasion but I wouldn't put money on it...........!

YouSayPotatoesISayVodka · 15/07/2019 20:27

They also have a play, an assembly, a leavers hoody and a trip to the cinema paid for by the pta. The amount of stress they were all put through for months over bloody SATs they deserve treats and things.

I will happily push the boat out for a y11/y13 prom or whatever as much as my bank balance will allow.

JoyceDivision · 15/07/2019 20:27

A leavers assembly in the morning on the last day of term, same arrangement each year so parents know what to book off.

Disco midweek one eve 7-9, all-in jeans and t-shirts, just arrived with parents. BBQ then home.
