Year 6 leavers

Anybody else have a year 6 leaving this time?
My son is and he's having a prom type thing, only at the school. He's got a suit and I've bought his ticket, he's asked me this afternoon (the prom is this Thursday) "so what am I arriving in?" I was just Confused. He said oh so and so is getting a limo, I just said , you're 11, we'll take you in our car, it's only down the road. Am I missing something? Is this more of a big deal than I thought? I just took it as the leavers disco. Please tell me I'm not being mean 🤔
I see the end of high school one as more of a big thing, but these things are becoming more common and it's a bit of a stress, along with the leaver's assembly and performance, plus getting ready for high school

When ds1 left p7 a few years back they had quite a fancy dance (not quite a prom). The girls all had pretty dresses, and most of the boys had kilts / suits. I think a few families might have clubbed together for a limo, but he just walked with some friends. I think it’s all just a bit of fun!
Ps.. high school is the general term here in Scotland, so not just an Americanism.

I didn't know that, thanks, ColdTatty. I've seen high school used a lot on MN but will know now the users are in Scotland (or the US, but you can usually tell if they're across the pond)! I like secondary school as a term, it follows on from primary school much better linguistically!

My baby is leaving this week. There will be tears, I’ve been through this twice before. Assembly tomorrow and a disco too in the evening.

Leavers assembly on Thursday and that’s it in our school, no disco, no party maybe go to the beach on a Friday afternoon when school finishes

Crikey! Ds is a leaver. He's having a party on Wednesday with a theme but it is for all juniors and they have it every year. There's also a leavers assembly, again, every year.

Ours is having a leavers assembly, a leavers show where they have been rehearsing for a performance and a disco. Sounds like it's as usual some parents starting all this and putting pressure on everyone else to do it.

I'm running our Leavers Disco on Thursday (I'm a mobile DJ) for DS' year 6.

We called it prom last year but like your child, some took it to mean limos and suits and fancy stuff, when we meant a nice outfit and a pizza!
I would take any comments regards anyone having a limo or ant fancy stuff with a very large pinch of salt. One last year swore blind she was coming in a carriage with horses- there was much disappointment when she turned up in her Mum's slightly rusty Fiat 😂

Our y6 prom was last week. Some used family friends nice cars, others walked. We are fairly rural so a girl arrived on tractor. DD1 and a few others arrived on ponies together as they are keen riders. One arrived on unicycle. Its a bit of fun but no one paid for transport.

Some children hyped up their arrivals claiming limos or super cars and ended up sneaking in unnoticed (not the children but the lack of super car went unnoticed). In the excitement no one questioned why but they were a little shy and clearly worried others might ask. All who arrived were greeted equally, most were more interested in their outfits than mode of transport.
