might say "are they brothers?" not "are they twins?"

It occurs to me that these people must be desperate for conversation to come out with things so irritating and expect a serious and friendly answer. We should pity the poor people.

lazyemma · 31/07/2007 07:43

big whup! Seriously trying to see how anyone can take offence at such a question. So what if it's a bit random? 99% of the time, people don't really give a stuff about your kids, they're just trying to think of something politely interested to say. Surprising as this may seem, you and your family are not the centre of everyone else's world.

hunkermunker · 31/07/2007 09:19

Oh, christ, it's not offensive and I don't think I said it was.

Big whup yourself.

Although why I'm replying, I don't know, since you're not the centre of my world. ffs

well - this is in the "Am I being unreasonable?" section. My opinion is: yes you are, and then some. If you didn't want replies from people who wouldn't absolutely agree with you, then you should've said so in your OP - saved us both the bother. Happy to help.

Nemo2007 · 31/07/2007 09:25

oh god I was asked this about the dds the other day, mmm yes twins born 12mths apart. Ok fair enough could understand if they were 4 and 5 but FGS DD1 is 19mths babbling, walking, etc DD2 is 7mths

hippipotami · 31/07/2007 11:00

My friend has twins - one boy and one girl. She once got into a near argument in a shop with some old lady who was adament the twins were identical. Errr no, one is wearing a dress the other jeans and a rugby top!

A few days after I had ds, I went for a gentle walk around our village with a friend. Friend had her 1 year old dd is a forward facing Pliko, I had 3 day old ds in a lie flat M&P pram. Both pushchair and pram were in the same yellow check fabric. ( M&P favourite about 8 or so years ago) The amount of people that asked us if the dc were twins was astounding!! Just because the prams were similar. No, take a close look - little girl, round pink cheeks, sitting up and babbeling, has first teeth, compare to tiny little boy, still red and prawn-like and all scrunched up lying down.

hunkermunker · 31/07/2007 11:08

Oh, get over yourself, LE. I see AIBU as a humorous topic, akin to Only Joking. If I was desperately sad about people thinking the boys were twins, I'd have posted in relationships or asked for a new topic called "I'm unable to see the funny side of life", perhaps.

The OP was obviously light-hearted. The thread was obviously light-hearted. Your post was unnecessarily aggressive, imo. I can't see anywhere where I said I took offence at the question.

Hippopotami, I once had a man very, very convinced DS1 was a girl - he was about 9mo. Dressed in blue stripes...!

Obviously I post this in a lighthearted fashion, I didn't lose sleep over him thinking this and I wasn't offended by it, because he said "Nooooo, he's too beautiful to be a boy" - so how could I be? But I feel I need to clarify...!

Elenya, where did you go to school? I went to school with twins with the exact same description. Did they also have a brother who looked more like the red haired ones twin than her twin did?

ElenyaTuesday · 31/07/2007 13:31

Oh how funny, iesha. I don't recall them having a brother but they were in the year below me - in my cousin's class - so I didn't know them that well.

It was a girls' school with a maroon and blue uniform (if that helps?). I can give you a few more clues if these ring a bell. Wouldn't it be funny if I knew you!

ChasingSquirrels · 31/07/2007 14:02

oh yes, it is SOOO UNREASONABLE, as opposed to having a moan about the dumb things people say. I am pretty sure that most of us know we aren't the centre of others peoples worlds.

hippipotami · 31/07/2007 15:05

My friend (the twins mum) did find it funny. I guess to be fair the twins do look similar (both have dark hair and wear glasses) but despite the clothes one was so obv a boy and one so ovb a girl (facial features, body language etc - these children were around 8 at the time)

As for my friends dd and my ds - it was just funny because the prams were so similar. Never mind anyone looking at the children themselves!

Mind you, where I live we have a large number of care in the community cases, so we have had some funny comments. I vividly remember a lovely (but batty) old woman pointing to ds in his pram (around 5 months old at the time) and shrieking : "An Angel, a proper little angel, come look everyone, an angel!" I hovered between being flattered and being a little scared.

iesha · 31/07/2007 18:33

Oh what a shame Elenya, This wasn't a girls school , It would have been strange if we had met on here and went to the same school. I wonder how many people on here are people that we heve known in the past too.

ElenyaTuesday · 31/07/2007 18:36

That's a pity, iesha!

3andnomore · 31/07/2007 18:40

lol hunker, they certainly don't look the same age...so, YANBU, lol!
Saying that, look at my profile and see my youngest 2 and honest they don't resemble eachother at all, and we still get the Twins line...I mean, wtf is that all about, lol!

Now, if es and ys would be the closest in age, I could understand such confusion, as they are spitting images of eachother.

Paddlechick666 · 31/07/2007 19:29

i think i can perhaps top this for craziness.

out with friends who's dd was born 1 week before ours when dd was about 3 weeks old.

dh and friend's dh are similar in complexion in that they're both fair and had a bit of stubble.

me and friend both bf our dd's.

waiter at lunch asked if dh and friend's dh were brothers (okay not too bad really i guess) but then asked if our dd's were twins!

wtf?!?!?

i repeat, me and friend were bf a baby each!

LOL, I wonder which one of us he thought was a wet nurse!

GodzillasBumcheek · 31/07/2007 19:44

Lol @ dumb waiter!
