To consider using grown up stuff on my kid?

My 10 year old daughter’s hair seems to be like straw the minute... very dry. I was looking at hair products in Superdrug the other day and was considering getting her some stuff that seemed more geared towards adults. Before I do that, is there any reason why I shouldn’t? Or do you guys have any advice for any products I should buy? (For the record, her diet and water consumption is pretty good).

Hair is dead, why couldn’t you use the same things?

pinkmagic1 · 15/07/2019 05:55

Why would you not? She is 10, not 10 months.

Broken11Girl · 15/07/2019 05:58

No reason why not at all, as long as you avoid dyes or harsh chemicals. Aussie and Herbal Essences are good.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/07/2019 06:01

Not peroxide and perm solution. But shampoo or conditioner, why not?

Raadi · 15/07/2019 06:03

I thought the same but vaguely remember an old hairdresser friend (not in touch anymore) saying she would never use the products she uses on her own hair on her kids - but I can’t remember why! Thanks for the tip regarding Aussie and Herbal Essence. Has anyone got any recommendation for any particular product that is good for dry hair please? Will ask in Style and Beauty too.

Definitely use it. Isn't it the case that most kids/babies stuff is just normal adult stuff in a different package. The only difference is the word "baby" on the front, a smaller package and a more expensive price.

orangeshoebox · 15/07/2019 06:05

we stopped using baby products when dc were about 2...

so yes of course. shampoo & conditioner is absolutely fine.

Dandelion1993 · 15/07/2019 06:05

My DD is 5 and we've used frizz ease for about 2 years on her.

It's just shampoo.

heartshapedknob · 15/07/2019 06:06

Can’t think of any reason why you shouldn’t if it’s just a leave in conditioner or styling product.

Daffodil2018 · 15/07/2019 06:07

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle is good. You could leave it on while she's in the bath - I sometimes put a shower cap over my wet hair while I do this to keep it "locked in"!

A Tangle Teezer is really worth getting too - much gentler on wet hair than a normal brush.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/07/2019 06:11

How odd to be told this. My 11 yo dd has double the amount of hair than the average human. I’ve been using adults products on it for years and years. Had I not, her hair would be totally unmanageable.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/07/2019 06:15

Try the Aussie miracle oil. We used to use the Aussie products. I find the l’oreal Oil products better on dds hair. Trial and error.

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 15/07/2019 06:41

I would. I have thick hair & was on adult shampoo at 9 or 10. Sounds like her hair needs it. I was hormonal at 10, too- started needing products that did stuff. Aussie is good for dry hair Smile.

Theducksarenotmyfriends · 15/07/2019 06:42

We had someone staying over at our house who left behind bottle shampoo like the ones pp mentioned above. I've used solid shampoo/conditioner for years but decided to use them so they didn't go to waste (guest wasn't coming back for them!). They totally dried out my hair, made it feel awful! I think the bottled stuff really strips the hair of all its lovely, protective oils? So maybe try some solid stuff? Plus no plastic waste.

edgeofheaven · 15/07/2019 06:43

My DCs and I use the same shampoo and conditioner and they're much younger than 10! We follow Curly Girl Method which means products without harsh cleansers or silicones, which means most of them are fairly gentle for children.

Binforky · 15/07/2019 06:43

All of mine have been using adult shampoo from the age of three. I only buy one lot and we all use it and they are fine.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 15/07/2019 06:47

I’m so relieved to read these replies-we’ve been using my shampoo and conditioner on DD (3) for ages. She has “my” hair, so needs the extra help Grin to calm the frizz.

Oysterbabe · 15/07/2019 06:48

I use 3 minute miracle on my 3 year old. It's the only thing that fights the tangles.

Fresta · 15/07/2019 06:50

There's nothing magic about kids shampoo- the key ingredients are the same as stuff geared to adults- it's all just marketing. In fact Johnson's baby shampoo is one of the most drying products I've ever used on my hair.

BertieBotts · 15/07/2019 06:54

We just use normal products except for the baby Confused

scubadive · 15/07/2019 07:07

Pantone 3 minute miracle. Repair or moisture ones.

Herbal essence and Aussie both poor products for dry hair, strip hair and leave it dry

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 15/07/2019 07:09

Try using a shampoo that doesnt have SLS in it x

MrsBagans · 15/07/2019 07:10

Just use whatever works for her hair, kids products are just a marketing ploy imo.
Babies need delicate shampoos etc but after that just use whatever you use x

MrsElizabethShelby · 15/07/2019 07:12

Iv only ever used 'adult' products even when they were newborns!

It's a marketing gimick. Same stuff different packet.

urbanlife · 15/07/2019 07:16

Baby shampoo is very mild, and will not wash or condition in the same way that an adult one will. They are also designed to protect the eyes from stinging etc.

Your dd's hair will be like straw as the conditioner will not be strong enough.

Match her hair to products, and if you can afford it, try and buy organic without chemicals etc.
