To think that £5.30 is a bit steep for a pot of tea for 2?

We were out cycling today, and I was desperate for a cup of tea. The tea was fine (except that it came as a pot of boiling water with a tea bag in each cup, which seemed a little odd).
We paid without thinking about it much, but , afterwards, I thought 'that much, for 2 tea bags and a bit of milk?'
Anyway, I know it's a 1st world issue, but what would you expect to pay?

It's a little expensive but not extortionate. I would probably have asked for an extra teabag and put them all in the pot though

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 14/07/2019 17:57

Yes that does seem like a lot.

BlueSkiesLies · 14/07/2019 17:58

Could you use your imagination to think what else needs to be covered by the price, as well as the tea bag?

The staff. The premises. The fixtures and fittings. Utilities. Insurance. Etc

bridgetreilly · 14/07/2019 17:58

That's a ridiculous way to serve it, but not a crazy price. I would expect to pay £2-£2.50 for one person. So £5 for 2 people seems fair.

Wafflecopter · 14/07/2019 17:58

That’s quite a lot for pretty much no effort on their part, however they probably get it a lot where people pay and don’t even think about it.

Villanellesproudmum · 14/07/2019 18:00

£2.65 for a cup of tea, sit down and use of toilet seems ok.

ZaraW · 14/07/2019 18:00

Depends what kind of place it was and where in the UK. It seems OK to me.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 14/07/2019 18:00

For two people to drink in it seems reasonable. Presumably there was service, tables were cleared, toilets etc?

FriarTuck · 14/07/2019 18:01

This ^^. It always amazes me how easily people forget what they're really paying for.

womaninthedark · 14/07/2019 18:01

Less than £3 each. Cheap.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 14/07/2019 18:01

Oh and yes to a crazy way to serve it!

Kidworries · 14/07/2019 18:01

If you knew how much was spent on stock. wages, rent bills and business rates you wouldnt question it. Most owners of small businesses dont pay themselves much.

Kidworries · 14/07/2019 18:02

Plus insurance and the constant demands for free
voucher for charity raising

Kidworries · 14/07/2019 18:05

And the amount of people who come in and ask for tap water and the wifi password stay for an hour then go.... and you cant say anything otherwise they leave a bad review....

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/07/2019 18:08

Our local teashop charges £1.95 for a pot of tea, and that would give two cups. So £3.90 for two, and you'd each get a second cup. Fancy tea is £2.30 per cup. So your £5.30 for a cup each is a little expensive but not exorbitantly so.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/07/2019 18:10

I know running a business is about making a profit but I certainly would pay £5.30 for some boiled water and tea bag.
I bet the tea bags are 100 for a pound from Asda.

Jaxhog · 14/07/2019 18:12

Depends where you were.

In a popular tourist spot, a Hotel or London, then this would be cheap. Anywhere else, probably a bit expensive.

Weebitawks · 14/07/2019 18:13

It always stuck with me the time I met some friends in a pub/restaurant. Myself and a friend ordered tea. It was £3 each, fine. It came in a pot - also fine. Then I looked. One fucking tea bag. £6 and one tea bag? It was a big bloody pot!

They looked at me like I was mental when I asked for another tea bag.

PineappleSeahorse · 14/07/2019 18:15

I paid about as much the other day but that was for a pot of loose leaf tea. The price isn't too unreasonable but I'd expect loose leaf for that or at least Teapigs or similar and an actual pot of tea, not what you described.

GreenShadow · 14/07/2019 18:20

Yes, I'd consider it a bit above average, but mist importantly, tea needs to be made with boiling water so serving it like that would put me off.

cwg1 · 14/07/2019 18:23

That is NOT a pot of tea.

ShowMeTheKittens · 14/07/2019 18:33

Cafes have become very expensive lately. I guess it is the overheads

NoHummus · 14/07/2019 18:35

I paid £2.10 for a pot of tea for 1 the other day, so that price seems about right for 2 people.

Well I’m afraid I’d risk the bad review. I wouldn’t give these CFs the wi-fi password if they just drunk tap water.
