To think that £5.30 is a bit steep for a pot of tea for 2?

We were out cycling today, and I was desperate for a cup of tea. The tea was fine (except that it came as a pot of boiling water with a tea bag in each cup, which seemed a little odd).
We paid without thinking about it much, but , afterwards, I thought 'that much, for 2 tea bags and a bit of milk?'
Anyway, I know it's a 1st world issue, but what would you expect to pay?

Seems very expensive to me, I’d pay that for two coffees if I had to but would baulk at paying that for hot water and teabags, and yes, I know “overheads” but still.

LabradorsandTiels · 14/07/2019 19:08

I'm hoping it came with scones or a big slice of cake for that price! Cafes are pricey these days but even fancy Costa or Starbucks are about £3-£4 for these fancy frappes things Grin
I thought tea would be cheaper! Bet it wasn't even Yorkshire tea lol

Kidworries · 14/07/2019 19:34

You honestly wouldnt risk the bad review. You would be surprised how kich they effect you.

People tend to read the bad ones before the good ones! And sometimes they dont tell the truth.

We had someone come in eat their fill. Great! Even complimented us. Paid a tio. Then slated us on a review website asking for a free meal to compensate! Shock ofcourse we didnt let that happen.

But there are many CF out there who like to get what they can for free.

Kidworries · 14/07/2019 19:35

Its cheeky buggers like that that ruin it for everyone else and why prices go up. That and bloody business rates!

EskewedBeef · 14/07/2019 19:41

I'd be unimpressed with their method, but the price is standard enough. A lot of places do charge less for 'tea for two' than two teas though, and I like those places.

LolaSmiles · 14/07/2019 19:45

It would depend on the quality of the tea and then obviously there's other costs.

I typically pay £2 for a pot of tea and that does 2 or 3 cups. I like even more when it's a small cafe that also gives a pot of boiling water to top it up.

bingbongnoise · 14/07/2019 19:53

@Gone2far

£5 for a pot of tea for two is not cheap no, but not crazy expensive either. Like £2.50 each.

No more than costa. If it's a little tea shop, it ain't bad.

Would have cost 3 or 4 quid (for 2,) in Maccy D's probably...

Yessers · 14/07/2019 19:53

That would be fine for 2 coffees bit seems too much for a couple of tea bags.

Having said that if that is all you ordered then it is quite cheap for a table in a cafe for half an hour. I normally have a scone or a tray bake with my coffee which means I would pay more for the table.

bobsyourauntie · 14/07/2019 20:02

That wasn’t a pot of tea though was it, it sounds very badly presented. Normally a pot squeezes out more than 2 cups, with the bags in the Pot!

Price doesn’t sound too bad though. My mum paid £2.75 yesterday for a pot for 1. She did get 3 cups out of it though.

ScreamingValenta · 14/07/2019 20:05

I'd expect a tea-pot with enough hot water for at least one refill, for that price. And decent loose tea.

Kidworries · 14/07/2019 20:08

I must say though a tea bag is bad form. We use tea leaves. But don't forget the price includes using the facilities. Hence why takeaway is always cheaper

Chickenwing · 14/07/2019 23:41

I wouldn't have paid that. You could make about 500 cups of tea for that price. Then again I'd never buy tea or coffee from a cafe or Starbucks and have always thought it's crazy what people pay.

Aaarrgghhh · 14/07/2019 23:43

Sounds fine to me. I really like a mocha from one place and also their hot chocolate. It costs near four pound I think. The tea for two for £5 something seems fine.

LellyMcKelly · 14/07/2019 23:47

I live in the South East and that sounds about right. A coffee is about £3.

BackforGood · 14/07/2019 23:50

Bit of an odd way to serve it, but does depend on lots of things. If it is a place people only frequent in the Summer, then they have to make their money then - very different from a caff on a High Street, as just one example.

SarahTancredi · 14/07/2019 23:52

I thought it was ant bag each then one fir the pot so should have been three bags not two.

That was not a pot of tea and that was daylight robbery. Overheads or no over heads . At the very least there should have been a biscuit

Cheeserton · 15/07/2019 00:14

cheap

No it isn't. Point absolutely correct about other costs etc, but 'cheap' it certainly is not.
