To let my hamster be a house hamster?

I rescued a hamster about 4 months ago who had had a pretty shit life up until then (she was about 8 months old when I got her).

She had never really been handled, but is now super tame and friendly. Her (very large) cage is on the floor of the living room, and since she’s become tamer I’ve been just opening the door of the cage and letting her free roam around the living room every evening, usually for 3-4 hours, sometimes longer. When she’s tired she gets back in her cage and puts herself back to bed.

Last night I was —three sheets to the wind— tired, and fell asleep while she was having her run around. This morning, when I went downstairs, she wasn’t in her house. No sign of her all day, but this evening she woke up and has been running around as normal, popping back into her cage every now and again for food and drinks or a quick run on her wheel.

I closed her cage door at about 10.30, and her little face broke my heart! She just sat at the door of her cage looking very sad indeed. She’s now out running around again. So I’m thinking, people have house rabbits, how about a house hamster? I’d keep her confined to the living room and she’d have the option of being in her cage if she wanted to be there (and I’d obviously put all her food in there).

Is this a bonkers idea? She has a sand bath, soil, deep substrate, and more toys and treats than you can shake a stick at in her cage, but she’d far rather not be in there. We don’t have any other pets that could munch her, and the dc are well trained at keeping the doors closed.

Haven't read the whole thread op just wanted to suggest a small pet run. We got one for our gerbils. From Amazon. Metal mesh panals that slot together. You can then fill it with fun safe things for her. You can always buy two and have a huge run. She is very cute!

DifficultSituation19 · 17/07/2019 10:40

@septembersunshine I reckon she’d be out of one of those in 5 seconds flat, she’s a very good climber.

Peanut now has an Instagram! Peanut the hamstar was already taken so she’s peanuthamstar if anyone wants to follow her.

I'm only here for the pictures. I love syrian hamsters. I had 4 of them (not at the same time of course).

FenellaVelour · 18/07/2019 15:49

I had 4 of them (not at the same time of course).

I had 26 of them... at the same time 😬

orangefolly · 18/07/2019 16:10

Oh Peanut is so beautiful 😍 #PeanutforPM

DifficultSituation19 · 18/07/2019 21:19

@orangefolly having a hamster for PM would actually be less absurd than the current options 😂

We had at least 2 hamsters that we used to let out every evening for a run around the room while we watched Tele. One of them used to climb up your leg when she wanted to be put away. I think I took a bit of care to ensure there were no cables to gnaw and we never had a problem. Would never leave them out if we weren't in the room though.

Knittedjimmychoos · 18/07/2019 22:19

Beautiful thread op ❤️❤️, what a little star 🌟

Knittedjimmychoos · 18/07/2019 22:20

What type of hamster is she op. HOW old do they live for and do they need worming or flea ING.

Badcat666 · 18/07/2019 22:31

Never get a rotastak system. Had one for Gollam the hamster when I was a teenager (huge bloody thing as kept adding to it)

I would often wake up with him sleeping on my head most nights, little shit had worked out he could pop the top off the sleeping module, have a wander round then nap on the top of my bed.

Weirdly he never poo'd or peed on me! Also was amazed he wasn't snuffled up by one of the cats.

Also used to climb up the dog and ride the poor thing round like a rodeo rider.

DifficultSituation19 · 18/07/2019 22:45

@Knittedjimmychoos she’s a Syrian hamsters. You don’t need to worm or flea them regularly, but you can get flea/mite treatments if they are especially itchy and scratchy. It’s not done routinely though.

Can we have another photo of Her Gorgeousness please.

Knittedjimmychoos · 18/07/2019 23:42

Thanks op.
What a character she is.Also hoping for more pictures Grin

Snoozanna · 19/07/2019 01:43

I've had house rats before. They were litter trained but cables could be a problem with one of them. Also had to be careful not to leave clothes lying around.

Snoozanna · 19/07/2019 01:47

Although actually just remembering that my childhood hamster caused a lot of damage as an escapee...and they're much harder to train than rats, so nevermind!

Omg ❤️

Also I’ve just been into Pets at Home in Gillingham (Dorset) and there is the most gorgeous hamster in the adoption section there. I really haven’t got any room for another hamster (we also have Miss Bitey who is whole other thread 😂) and they both have massive cages. This one is a female, about 18 months, and she was in the adoption section for so long in another store that she’s been moved to this store to try and find a home. She’s beautiful, huge and very friendly. Just putting it out there in case any lovely mumsnetters are able to give her a home.

Otherwise I’m going to have to get rid of some furniture so that I can fit another cage in my house 😂.

She's just adorable.

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 19/07/2019 10:16

What if you opened a door and squished her little feet?

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 19/07/2019 10:20

I adore your hamster! But as everyone else has already said, it would be a terrible idea to let her roam your house!

Vesperia · 19/07/2019 10:46

she is amazingly cute but unfortunately will chew through wires making it dangerous for you & her.

have you seen the rota stack type cages ?
