To let my hamster be a house hamster?

I rescued a hamster about 4 months ago who had had a pretty shit life up until then (she was about 8 months old when I got her).

She had never really been handled, but is now super tame and friendly. Her (very large) cage is on the floor of the living room, and since she’s become tamer I’ve been just opening the door of the cage and letting her free roam around the living room every evening, usually for 3-4 hours, sometimes longer. When she’s tired she gets back in her cage and puts herself back to bed.

Last night I was —three sheets to the wind— tired, and fell asleep while she was having her run around. This morning, when I went downstairs, she wasn’t in her house. No sign of her all day, but this evening she woke up and has been running around as normal, popping back into her cage every now and again for food and drinks or a quick run on her wheel.

I closed her cage door at about 10.30, and her little face broke my heart! She just sat at the door of her cage looking very sad indeed. She’s now out running around again. So I’m thinking, people have house rabbits, how about a house hamster? I’d keep her confined to the living room and she’d have the option of being in her cage if she wanted to be there (and I’d obviously put all her food in there).

Is this a bonkers idea? She has a sand bath, soil, deep substrate, and more toys and treats than you can shake a stick at in her cage, but she’d far rather not be in there. We don’t have any other pets that could munch her, and the dc are well trained at keeping the doors closed.

🐹😍

@Vesperia rotastacks and other similar cages aren’t advised these days. It’s all about the unbroken floor space, and the recommended minimum is 80x50cm

she is super cute, my hamster once squeezed through the pipes under the bath and dropped down under the floorboards - we could hear it scurring about above the living room ceiling. We enticed it out with a bowl of cat food and never let it out in the bathroom again!

So...looks like I’ve got a new hamster 🐹

Hurrah!

DropZoneOne · 19/07/2019 19:12

Oh she's gorgeous ❤ she hasn't been in a pet shop all her life has she?

DifficultSituation19 · 19/07/2019 19:38

Oh it happened! No not in a pet shop all her life...turns out her previous owners took her to be adopted because she escaped for a month and was living in the walls of their house. Then she spent 6 months back in the pet shop waiting to be adopted.

She’s bloody enormous, she’s the size of a guinea pig and I’m not exaggerating!

Blimey she certainly looks like a chunk doesn’t she?

A zoozone2 might be ideal for that one

What’s her name? Marmite?

I'm glad you don't put hey in a ball. When I was about 18 I was in a pub beer garden, there was s little girl there with a hamster in a ball that she egg letting run around (not wise but not a busy pub), until it rolled near a drunk bloke who thought it was just a child's football and kicked it full pelt to the other end of the garden where the play area was. Poor hamster didn't make it. I actually don't blame the drunk man, the pub is a place for drunks not for hamsters.

Soubriquet · 19/07/2019 19:48

My grandad did the same thing to my poor hammy when I was young before I knew balls were no good.

He thought it was a football too and kicked it out into the garden.

Luckily it landed on the grass and the hamster survived with no after affects.

I never let him forgot it though

l have house rabbits and l have to be very careful what they have access to, as they love to chew cables and wiring.
Doing this with a hamster could be a disaster. l know someone whose hamster got inside their sofa. lt made a nest and they actually had to dismantle it to get it out.
Your hamster is lucky to have such a loving and caring owner, but she needs to be in a cage when unsupervised. They're nocturnal and god only knows what you could find when you get up in the morning.

DifficultSituation19 · 19/07/2019 19:57

@TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan OMG that’s awful! Poor hammy :(

Hamster escaped and went up the lum, came back about two days later and was imprisoned once more in its cage.

I speak as a woman who 10 years ago slept on the couch so my budgie could have the double bed when it had a cold.

😂😂

DifficultSituation19 · 19/07/2019 19:59

@Soubriquet her name is Rose but I think that’s far too innocent for her. She’s got an Alaska cage and which do her for now, I might have to upgrade her though as she’s so huge.

Soubriquet · 19/07/2019 20:05

Definitely not a Rose

Rose is too petite Grin

Badcat666 · 19/07/2019 20:09

Look at her huge ickle face!

Def not a rose, more like a big foot

Whisky2014 · 19/07/2019 20:24

I love peanut!

ForalltheSaints · 19/07/2019 20:25

Maybe the hamster is mourning for the death of Freddie Starr!

chubberella · 19/07/2019 20:41

I actually love this thread! Your new hamster is so gorgeous and I am so jealous!

I have had hamsters all my life (only Syrians mind) and I haven't had one for a few years, but it's making me want one again! I can't though as we don't have the space or time at the moment.

Our last one was called Fudge and unfortunately he passed away when he was about 9 months old and we have no idea why. We got him from a family breeder who lived about 30 miles away and he was absolutely stunning and so so friendly Sad

Weatherforducks · 19/07/2019 20:54

Have not RTWT but just let her out when you can supervise whilst chilling on a night in front of the TV.

Gorgeous hamster though!!
